Miss Earth version 2.0

Postby Orakulo » Mon Jan 16, 2023 11:21 am

I can still remember that time when I got mocked by ex-friends who are big fans of Miss Universe and also staunch supporters of "that" pageant for defending Miss Earth and it's standard in choosing their queen. They firmly believe that beauty pageants are mainly for entertainment and that advocacy is just secondary. An advocacy driven pageant like Miss Earth, for them, is a quiz show and just a second tier beauty contest.

With the new era of Miss Universe and the result of the latest edition, especially the exclusion of Celeste Cortesi, I wonder what they are thinking right now. It's seems that Miss Universe is headed towards becoming advocacy driven, I wonder if they will relegate Miss Universe from being an Alpha pageat to a 2nd tier beauty contest.

Nope, she was a top 8 finalist in Miss Earth 2018, the year when she was Miss Philippines Earth (for her year, she was titled as Miss Earth Philippines for some reason). Karen Ibasco was her predecessor (since Miss Earth does not use the Miss USA-winning-Miss Universe rule) and Janelle Tee was her successor. Both she and Telma Madeira (who placed recently in Miss Universe) were in the same set of 8 finalists, along with Valerie Ayos (who would later become Miss Water and compete in Miss Universe 2021, landing in the final five) and Diana Silva from Venezuela (who will compete in this year's edition of Miss Universe in El Salvador).

I have to agree with this. I am also a huge fan of Miss Earth - although for Miss Universe, I understood why people were surprised with Amelia placing (although honestly, I wasn't that surprised!). It's sad because Celeste is a Miss Earth alumna herself, yet despite competing in a pageant now adopting to a style Miss Earth has practiced for years, she wasn't able to make it as far as she did back four years ago.

Ultimately, entertainment can't be compromised, but that doesn't mean that you should compromise your advocacy either. I want to see Miss Universe prioritize again her advocacies of choice, especially the ones that matter indeed, while the production offered is great and gives a glimpse of both the past and the future in a way in which fans would love it.

Celeste was not authentic. All she had was physical beauty and no substance. She said in her contestant profile that she learned different languages but she never uttered a single Filipino word or Filipino expression.

Paula Shugart is not Carousel Productions. She is not that dumb to include a Filipina by convenience just because Celeste has the hype and fan support.

If Celeste now competed in Miss Earth, she would probably be the runaway winner with how ultra low their standards are by crowning the likes of Sandra Seifert, Jamie Herrell, examples of jobless halfies who only competed for a career in the Philippines.

No disrespect to Karen, although out of the Miss Philippines Earth winners that could win Miss Universe, Celeste was the most competent that I've ever seen. Another one would be Roxie Baeyens (2020), but I'm not sure on whether she will do a cross-over, since Celeste's eventual placement might discourage them from crossing-over.

Honestly, I am happy with Miss Universe's direction (although I'm not happy with Celeste's non-placement!). Miss Earth and Carousel just need good production - but yes, being advocacy-driven should already be a priority of the pageants that still exist. The same goes to Miss Universe.

Since Miss Universe is heading to a more advocacy and inclusivity driven competition then they should start showing the interview prelims with the judges as well to be more transparent in choosing their semi finalists.
