MISS UNIVERSE Q/A

Postby Oma-san » Fri Feb 10, 2023 6:25 pm

I don't agree with the criteria of making English an important requirement for producing results in pageants {how I wish Janine was Miss Universe for that phenomenal statement. Best answer in Miss Universe}. This started becoming very apparent during the IMG era in Miss Universe and now, it's become an unwritten norm. This costs beautiful girls a chance to compete in the finals for the crown. It does make me confused how the Caribbean girls who are fluent in English miss out in placements after watching Leilani, Miss World Barbados 2000 who made a video on the rigged victory of Priyanka Chopra.

I think the Q/A should be pre-taped but very much asked in the spur of the moment. I'm thinking the contestant each could be taped on the stage in the look that they intend to put together for the finals so that that segment could then be aired with subtitles in the finals similar to how the introduction rounds in 2013 and other years were filmed. Four contestants would simply stand in front of the audience as their segment played out.

There have been winners that have won that did not answer in English. The pageants was mainly broadcasted in the USA on a American network. So, it makes sense that the girls should be answering in English. The winner is going to live in the USA. Not sure how that will continue going forward with Anne saying the girls will be splitting their time between NYC and Thailand. Most people are bilingual these days anyway, especially the younger generation. And no the Q and A should not be recorded. There is enough speculation as it is could you imagine the uproar that would cause when a girl that wins is accused of having help ahead of time because her Q and A was taped ahead of time.

That only works for girls who come from countries that have English in their media or administration. No the girl shouldn't have to speak English. Americans don't even care about Miss Universe. Those winners were mostly Latin. By the time IMG took over, this English requirement became quite visible. Even if a girl is bilingual, it can't be guaranteed that she thinks in English to answer important questions that are sometimes asked in Miss Universe. Leaving aside the non-finalists, even top 5 candidates such H'hen Nie who I think would have made a great Miss Universe was cost her crown because of the interpreter. Pre-recording gives ample time for the organization to have a professional interpreter read through it and get the most accurate translation. Then that is played out in subtitles during the finals night and no one can really tell because of the full dress and makeup taping, etc.

You're wrong. The history of the pageant will tell you that. Stefania Fernandez did not speak English the night she won. Go back and watch her Q&A. She stopped and pause to allow the translator to translate. She controlled her translator. That is why she won. Additionally, after she was crowned Miss Universe she began taking English classes right away. Do you know why she learned English? She learned English because the MUO was based in NYC and most of her time was spent in the USA. She knew in order to be a successful Miss Universe that she was going to need to be fluent in English. The USA might not be into pageants as the rest of the world but they certainly do have an audience. I could not say how many but I am willing to be that 95 percent of the previous winners in the Miss Universe pageant going back to 1952 spoke English. That was long before the IMG era. And what about Kurara Chibana? Didn't she answer her final question in French? It is not always about the answer or the translation. It often comes down to the girl. English is still a major part of the Miss Universe organization. If a girl cannot speak English then the chances of her doing well are most likely not that good.

You're admitting this eventually. I have a problem with that. English is what's killing the competition and making so many great stop from being Miss Universe. Stefania won because she's Miss Venezuela obviously and her win was greatly contested. Ivian Sarcos was a great Miss World even though she couldn't learn English to fluency level.

Kurara Chibana speaks fluent English and French. Go search on YouTube for proof but like I said, we have a primary language which we think in. And that's what happened with her.

Making English mandatory adds unnecessary pressure to the girl and no matter how much she learns, she will never be able to use it comfortably if that's not her primary language. Of course, wit helps just as Dayana Mendoza interacted freely and was the fun of the party. But if a candidate could express herself without English as H'hen Nie did who I think would have made a great Miss Universe, why not let her? H'hen Nie chose to complete herself in other levels and did not learn English preferring to perfect her pose and presentation on stage instead and we know how she shone in the Miss Universe stage.

Language is not killing the competition. Pageants are dying out because the majority of the population do not feel they're relevant anymore. Many people feel that pageants objectify women rather than promoting women.

You seemed to have missed my point with Kurara. I was simply using her as an example to solidfy my point. She answered her final question in French. No one in the audience knew what she was saying and she still managed to get first runner up. It is not always about the language. Sometimes it is about the actual performance of the girl and the charisma that she carries such as Kurara in 2006.

I only care for the Miss Universe pageant. I could care less about other international pageants. If the Miss Universe was not broadcast in English, I would most likely stop watching it. If the Miss Universe and even Miss World want to remain the leading global pageants then English will remain a very important requirement in the pageant. It is simple. You have no point beyond what you're saying.

Well you need to get self-entitlement out of yourself. And Miss Universe can survive if all countries feel they have a chance in placing or winning. IMG did do a transformational job. But English language requirement is proving to be an obstacle. Kurara answered her final question in Japanese which was translated. The french was spoken in the first casual round. H'hen Nie was able to make impact even with her broken English but to answer a more serious question, the incompetency of her interpreters which is not unusual for many countries as we have seen with Miyako Miyazaki, compromised her progress.

IMG sucked. Glad they're gone. They tried to make the pageant woke. English will continue to be a main component in the MUO.
