Filipinos are criticizing Celeste Cortesi's preliminary performance at Miss Universe by saying that it was very similar to Rabiya Mateo's underwhelming and timid presentation in 2021. Even if you search both names on Facebook, many are citing similarities between the two.
Rabiya Mateo, who competed in Miss Universe 2020, was the first Miss Universe Philippines delegate under the tutelage of Jonas Gaffud and Shamcey Supsup. Though she continued the streak of placements for the Philippines, she was lambasted for exhibiting poor presentation in both the preliminaries and the finals night where she failed to advance to the Top 10 after the swimsuit competition.
Mateo also became popular during the Miss Universe 2020 season after a very publicized online breakdown, in which she cried live on social media after reading comments on her performance at the National Costume show. Most pageant fans have been very vocal against Mateo ever since, citing her as one of the worst Filipina representatives.
Team Miss Universe Philippines is again being dragged for making Cortesi look inferior to other delegates as compared to her gorgeous styling in the national pageant. Aside from the lack of energy as cited by some, her evening gown was also criticized for being too plain and common, especially after showing up to events wearing the best outfits. Cortesi is currently one of the frontrunners in the Miss Universe competition.
