To date they only have 1 semi-finalist since they joined the competition

Arguebly, some of these countries are new to the competition or have stopped sending candidates

1. The Bahamas (2021)
2. Nepal (2018)
3. Latvia (2005)
4. Cyprus (2002)
5. Turks and Caicos
6. Belize
7. Zimbabwe (2000)
8. Myanmar (2020)
9. Slovenia (2007)
10. Ethiopia (2006)
11. US Virgin Islands
12. Malaysia
13. Suriname
14. Morocco

Malaysia placed in Miss Universe 1970, Hong Kong too in 1970. Turks and Caicos placed the year when won Cecilia Bolocco in 1987

In 2011 (Devorah Henry) and 2012 (Kimberly Leggett), Malaysia sent two strong candidates. It was a shock to me not to see them in the semis. Looks like sash factor played a role for their exclusion.

Hong Kong last placement was at Miss Universe 1988 where Pauline Yeung finished 4th Runner Up.

Technically those countries aren't the weakest since they placed once.

The Pageant Nerd just released a video about countries that haven't placed. 69(!) nations/territories never placed before. Although, this number includes some identities that no longer exist or send delegates, like Transkei, CIS and Guadeloupe.

If we take this discussion further, we can debate if 'weakest' refers to relative placement or absolute placement.

In terms of relative placement, Malta, BVI and Mauritius are the top 3 countries who participated many times (40, 37, 34 respectively) but never placed. This means the return of investment in sending a delegate is absolutely abysmal.

In terms of absolute placement, 18 nations only competed once (eg, Bangladesh, Bhutan). This means they just send a delegate once in history and never really bothered again yet.

All stats from The Pageant Nerd (youtube).

Portugal only placed once and that was in 2011, when Brazil hosted Miss Universe. And they placed through fan-vote. I would have loved to see other Portuguese girls make it. I remember 2000 and 2002 were decent delegates.

I think my country, Trinidad and Tobago is also weak at Miss Universe. We have not placed in this stupid contest since 2006. Anyway, thank God we focus more on Miss World.

I hope Egypt returns to Miss Universe under Miss Egypt - Bent Masr (Daughter of Egypt) org.

Would have loved to see their current winner at Miss Universe 2022.

While Hongkong was the first Asian to place in Miss Universe, Japan was the first Asian to Win to Crown, Followed by Thailand and then Philippines. Philippines was the first Asian to get the crown twice in a short span, followed by Thailand. Then India entered the scene. Asian pride in Miss Universe are definitely Philippines with 4 crowns, India with 3, Thailand and Japan with 2 each.

In 2011, Malaysia did not do good in the prelims. That is probably why she missed the cut.
