The Golden Days of Miss Universe was BETTER

Postby Zingostar » Sat Nov 06, 2021 1:21 am

Sorry but the girls of Miss Universe back in the days, the golden days of Miss Universe had such a good time at the pageant compared to today. Filled with fun dance routines, great trips, locations, etc etc. Unlike today when they spend less than a week at the pageant and mostly locked up at some hotel! I would say that the last Miss Universe pageant that maintained a great pre-pageant schedule and had a great production value was Miss Universe 2000.

The pageant goes overdrive when it is staged outside the US. Bangkok in 2005 was unforgettable.

The ancillary events at the 2016 Miss Universe have been amongst the best ever. The delegates were all over the Philippines--from the north down to the south, lapping up true street culture. Everyone seemed to have been outside all the time--and everyone was treated like winners by the locals. The coronation night was glitzy and noisy in a giant stadium--an extravaganza of lights and sound. This edition is underrated for all its achievements.

Yes, this is what I want for Miss Universe. Something that reminds you of a theatre act, a concert, and a cultural exposition at the same time. I do agree that 2000 was the last pageant to showcase something that gorgeous and when NBC’s rule with the Donald came along, only 2005 had the best way of showcasing the culture, along with a bit of 2008 and 2009. Sadly, even before IMG came in, it was already turning awful. IMG has kept some Trump relics that were put in the last minute such as those long introductions in the semifinalist announcements that began in Miss USA 2014, along with not putting scores because some fans will whine about it, even if transparency is much better. The worst thing that the Trump era did was change the sashes into the typical Impact font sashes that you can easily replicate to the point that its everywhere, even in local US-based pageants not affiliated with the MUO (and MUSAO).
Sisters forever.
Will never forget the Miss Universe trio that once was. For now, covering other pageants.

The Best Editions of Miss Universe happened under IMG. The 2016 edition in Manila had the best ever pre-pageant activities, the candidates that year were the luckiest batch with so many lavish and exciting events and travels while the 2018 finals in Bangkok was probably the most fabulous show, but the most unforgetable was of course the controversial 2015 edition. People from all over the world even those who were not into pageants and didn't care or even know that there is such a thing as Miss Universe will always remember that year. The IMG Queens are also the most relevant and they are women of substance who are still active in different important causes even after their reign.

I liked before how most of the delegates have natural beauty, they chose on natural beauty and intelligence unlike now, many naturally stunning bneauties are wasted every year .

natural beauty must be first,i am not a fan of plastic beauties, natural beauty is the real beauty not the doctor work

The Golden Years of the Miss Universe pageant were in the '8O and the beginning of the '9Os :=p
Obviously the new generations cannot appreciate this, because they were not born yet or they were kids...
When Donald Trump bought the contest in 1996, the event became more commercial, many candidates began to turn to Plastic Surgery as an obsession.
Trump started his administration on the wrong foot, because he declared that he personally chose several of the Finalists :-O
This made it clear that the Judge is "just a FAKE screen"... The organization directly chooses the winner!!! >:)

Also 1996/ 97 will be remembered forever as the year they chose Alicia Machado, perhaps one of the worst beauty queens of all times:

While the contest was under the direction of Trump it became a Business $$$ where true beauty was excluded

WHY DO THE SAME COUNTRIES ALWAYS WIN???
During the IMG era there were many protests over the unexpected victory of Estefanía Fernández in 2009
That Back to Back was a clear favoritism towards Venezuelan delegates (a country with an annual contribution of US $ 98.4 billion, according to the IMF)

Why do the same countries always win???
Are there not beautiful girls in small countries like Belgium, Curaçao or Ecuador?

It is a shame that the USA has eight Miss Universe titles and very closely Venezuela with seven :-w

I can speak for myself. The way to enjoy Ms U is to go with its flow, and accept both the old and the new with equanimity. I miss the old Ms U format, but we have to understand what it means to let go of our attachments to prepare ourselves for the changes or additions as they unfold.

in the 80s the miss were more serious and beautiful, today they are screaming, sexy and vulgar, in the 80s they were disney princesses, now they are all sezy and redone playboy style. in the 80s the most beautiful ones went to the final, today there are those from countries with many fans and national organizations that pay more. in the 80s they were beautiful and silent, today when they ask him the questions they already have the answers ready, in the 80s they were natural today all redone by surgery or the gym. in the 80s they had beautiful colored clothes, today they have transparent clothes where they look naked, in the 80s they paraded with one-piece and elegant costume and slowly, today they run on the catwalk in small bikinis.

No more great introductions, no great dance routines. No major travels for the girls and meeting interesting people.

Those that say that the 2016 edition was spectaculae should watch 1996 or 1997 for example... production value was great back then.

And lets face it when a show was better in the 1980s then something radical needs to be done

There is absolutely no reason that the current org could not have the 1980s format. Its just lazyness.

The edition nowadays in order for a candidate to win has to be smart and intelligent beyond everyone's consciousness and IQ level. She needs to know how to play the game very well. The management of MUO today's challenge you to fight not sisterhood as you are assuming. They instigate war, commotion and brings you closer to The Gates of Hell, such as December 13, Dead Sea, Red Sea. That's the reason why when you hear something, say something. When you see something, say something then make some noise. That's the only way to stop MUO to ever reach further from tormenting us and giving us bitter sweet medicine that's hard to swallow.

She outsmart the Organization for her to snatch the crown from other delegates. Remember her saying, Don't let no one tells you that you're not valuable or worth it. That was Gloria Diaz strategy before, she said further that do not let no one comes ahead of your way and all those who attempted, she pulled their legs to the oblivion.

Or a mere admission that that kind of production is outdated.

If Miss Universe wants to broaden its market and stay relevant, it will target, not us older fans who are now a shrinking audience, but the younger generations who will relate to those women competing on stage. And the organization is doing exactly that. The Gen-Z and millenial crowds are insanely opinionated: they appreciate those oratorical and declamation pieces that we older fans cringe at. The inclusion of Siera Bearchell, Angela Ponce, and Maria Thattil supports another trait of this generation that they are targeting: they reject stereotypes and challenge conventions. (No, it's not about having "good TV stories, as Nina recently suspected.)

Extravagant cultural productions will never interest them: they're seen as throwbacks to an older way doing things.

The Golden Days of Miss Universe in 1980s and early 1990s were BETTER, which I agree with that, but if you want to force MUO to do this in the modern era then this is another story because of the social media booming. One complain of sleep deprivation due to intense dance rehearsals it may spread hate against MUO or that girl from the netizens. The girls in the 2010s and 2020s are different from girls in the past especially on the mental health and their professions.

Miss USA is now reduced to 7-10 days of activities rather than 2-3 weeks because most of the girls are professionals and possibly limited work leaves unless if you will win Miss USA crown?

It gives a lot of people butterflies in their stomach already because it's nearing the coronation night. Hopefully, it doesn't shock us all with the selection of winner. MUO should stop tormenting us.

To be blunt about your comment, your wish is not MUO's command. Your ideas may be good, but to them, it's not what you think it was. Your agendum doesn't serve MUO's purpose and the decision isn't for you to make. Who knows they might even have agonized over days and nights about the "older" ways of doing but that alone doesn't suffice. Given MUO/IMG's present circumstance with nothing solid to contribute any which way from where you stand, the organization cannot and shouldn't be dictated upon, I guess.

Damned if you do and damned if you don't.

If a contestant complained about fatigue & lack of sleep due to endless rehearsals for the two production dance numbers (opening & pre-evening gown number) on social media then the netizens will blame either MUO for mistreating the girls or the girl itself because she can't handle the job of Miss Universe.

Maybe the additional production number for non-finalists was abolished in 1998 because of too much pressure & fatigue from the girls during rehearsals, instead they are now walking or do simpler dance routine for the swimsuit & evening gown presentation for the non-finalists.

Miss Universe is an ordeal and Que Horror. That's why they want to select a winner who is Empowered and Confident. Mr Harvey have said, there's no time to be weary or tired or else you'll gonna be sent to the oblivion forever. All the more, MUO is elevating the ordeal to far reaching and beyond. That's why the candidates need to have strategy to outsmart MUO to get the crown.

what i don't like about pageants now not only miss universe but other pageants as well is the use of led monitors, they somehow get some attention instead of focusing on the girls and host country cannot show their uniqueness and creativity on stage design.

There is absolutely no reason that the current org could not have the 1980s format. Its just lazyness.

When Trump took over the pageant in 1996, it was every year a top rated event. Highly publicized. Today it is outside the Top10 in ratings, Miss USA is broadcast on some channel without national reach and without high ratings. Miss Universe these days are not an important event outside its fanbase, thanks to the MUO insistence of making the pageant BORING

Miss USA is these days reduced because of the franchise holders money grabbing mentality. Miss USA in the 90s and before was a high production glamour event. These days the stages are basic and the girls can be happy if they get to leave their hotels one afternoon for some sightseeing

Most of national pageants in America are already reduced their pageant days to just 1 week to 10 days. I think work leaves not extravagant productions were the factors of reduced number of days.

The golden years of the Miss Universe pageant were during the times of Hillevi Rombin, Apasra Hongsakula and Akiko Kojima .

The girls really had a good time .
Simply fantabulous years .

Those were the days ... 25 years ago to be exact. But you're aching to watch the next edition of Ms U '21 as it unfolds. I don't think your disapproval would matter much in fact one less approval will not make a dent.

Hillevi Rombin and her Performing Dogs
Hillevi Rombin (1933-1996) was crowned Miss Universe in 1955. Her talents included gymnastics, track & field, skiing, and sausage snake charming. She demonstrated the latter with her "performing dogs" for National Kraut and Frankfurter Week.
