Was It A Glitch, A Power Outage or Something More Than That

Postby Prozac » Sat Jan 07, 2023 8:10 am

Glitch is a wrong word used when talking about the January 1st fiasco at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport
causing flight delays and cancellations, chaos, and confusion.

A computer glitch or blip is a sudden, usually temporary malfunction or irregularity of equipment. It was not
temporary (since the problem dragged for days) and the way I see it is more of a shutdown ... a malfunction
in the system, a hardware failure that causes that system to freeze, reboot, and make error messages. It was a
disaster, a dangerous snafu and somebody did screw up big-time and should take responsibility.

I don't want to sound too morbid, but I could not help but think of the possibilities in case there is a failure in air
traffic control management or there is a glitch or a blip, or a power outage perhaps. Have you ever thought of a
crash and the worst aviation disaster waiting to happen and God forbid ... a possible mid-air collision?

Air traffic management is carried out by air traffic controllers assisted by complex technical systems that provide
them with visualization of the traffic situation. What happened last January 1 is a red flag and CAAP (Civil Aviation
Authority of the Philippines) and the government should not take the incident matter of factly with a cavalier attitude.

CAAP and the government should not just shrug off their shoulder and take the Jan 1st NAIA incident disdainfully
as if the situation is normal and not unusual. Aside from a possible aeronautics catastrophe, there's the problem
of passengers having to deal with delayed or canceled flights, problems of rebooking and rerouting, problems on
who will shoulder their hotel accommodations, their food, and how about the sardine-packed airports looking like
a makeshift refugee camp?

And not to be forgotten are the international flights having to refuel or have stopovers in Manila ... this is a big
blow to our tourism industry which already experienced severe beatings brought about by Covid.

This one is for the record: A total of 282 flights were either delayed, canceled, or diverted to other regional airports
while more than 56,000 passengers were affected by a glitch or a power outage that became the passenger's nightmare
last New Year's Day.

Another scenario was a Manila-bound Qantas plane that departed from Sydney shortly before 1 p.m. last January 1.
Three hours into its eight-hour journey, the flight was then forced to turn around mid-air and return to Australia.

Indeed ... expect the best and the worst when you go to the Philippines!

The New Year's NAIA fiasco was an epic failure in the most embarrassing way possible. As expected it ignited an
angry backlash from the netizens and politicians did not dilly-dally and were not shy as they joined the fray.

Senator Grace Poe demands a probe and she was asking for transparency and accountability. "We will therefore
conduct a hearing as part of the Senate's oversight function to determine who is liable and what we need to do
to avoid malfunction from happening again." she said.

It is high time now that the government brings solutions to the escalating passenger airport woes. If we remember
right Atom Araullo was trolled and criticized online just for saying truthfully about NAIA broken airport transport
system when he has problems getting a ride from the airport.

The infamous January 1st NAIA debacle is another case in point. But what is there we heard, our congressmen are
more interested in rechristening the airport name - a ludicrous priority in a sea of traveler woes.

I read somewhere about some paranoia of concerned netizens confused about CAAP's explanation of the glitch
and the power outage last January 1. Was there sabotage? And who was the saboteur? I understand where they
are coming from ... that is what fear does to people. If CAAP can't provide an acceptable explanation people
create a more outlandish scenario in their minds.

So was there foreign interference in why there was a power shortage in the airport when all the environs in the
periphery did not experience any? Was it just a coincidence (the West Philippine sea escalating problems) or was
it a ploy to scare the Philippine government and make them shake in their boots?

As long as CAAP beats around the bush with its theories people will continue to entertain some worst-case possibilities.

I was browsing youtube to see the latest on Arizona gubernatorial race when I see Christian Esguerra's (a no=nonsense
journalist) Fact First - Airport Shutdown: SINO ANG MAY SALA?

I salute the man ... and I learned a lot. Here is the link:

If I listen to an Atom Araullo or a Christian Esguerra exclusively, I'm dead. Everyone should know by now which lair of politics or side of the political spectrum these two media purveyors of opinion a.k.a. newscasters belong.

The public has been relentlessly besieged with a myriad of information but I will not be deterred (seeking out a balanced perspective on this matter) listening up to what the knowledgeable, i.e. seasoned lawyers, technical specialists, engineers, administrators and airport executives (both of the present and two previous admins) have to say. What I'm saying is, there's a host of intelligible sources out there from whom the sensible public should obtain and process factual information in order to better understand what actually transpired (before, during and after the airport power interruption fiasco.)

It is important to note that, barring the attendant complications, NAIA power supply was restored in a matter of hours as the mobilization of the stranded continues -- both passengers and outbound flights had been sorted for days on end as we speak.

To summarize: our constitution guarantees the basic human right of the accused, i.e. presumption of innocence unless otherwise proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The prosecution in this case (the state) failed miserably even with its faulty case build-up which collapsed beyond redemption, hence, they lost. As if to exacerbate matters, pedestrian public opinion suffered a setback as the lawyers of both prosecution and defense had agreed to a gag order ... beyond the consternation of a large majority that may have expected an easy guilty verdict in the end. haha... the twists and turns in this case make for a highly interesting study but not for the maritess of heart and mind!

Go, Ox. Wherever your heart leads you. Find a convenient respite. No such thing exists as a perfect place to live and work, but regardless the caveat:- a certain something goes amiss always. Explore new surroundings, immerse in a renewed sense of purpose .. watch the seasons go .. seek new encounters and no drama this time, please. Heal, bounce back and be happy. Mark your presence as you pass through. Ciao!
