Nora Aunor: National Artist At Last

Postby Prozac » Tue Jun 14, 2022 1:52 pm

After several years of being nominated as the National Artist for Cinema, finally, Nora Aunor can have a sigh of relief,
the award is now in her hands as she was given the penultimate award of recognition given to a living actress last June
10 2022.

The Superstar - Nora Aunor, the little brown girl from Iriga with the golden voice despite being one of the most awarded
actresses in the Philippine movies, gave President Noynoy Aquino a headache whether to confer her the award in 2014,
blame it on Nora's viral drug issues when she was still in America. That drew criticism from the public as they chant:
"We are looking for a National Artist here ... not a saint!"

By default, she had a repeat nomination in 2018, but the award seemed too elusive for her ... the highest recognition
for Filipino artists slipped again from her hands during President Duterte's term.

With the help of Congressman Christopher de Venecia, the year 2022 proved to be the year when she would receive the
"slippery as the catfish" award. Given by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts of the Philippines and Cultural
Center of the Philippines, the award needs the approval of the President of the Philippines. Thank goodness, it looked
like Nora's history with drugs has lost steam (she has turned a new leaf for one) ... and the expiration date of the issue
is long overdue.

With the drug scandal (which proved to be her Achilles heel) she could have won the award a long time ago. Meanwhile,
Nora Aunor started to collect awards from international and local film festivals and when it rains ... it pours. She has by
now a room full of trophies and medals of recognition. And because of this, it can't be ignored that Nora is ripe to win the
National Artist recognition. It is just so unthinkable that an actress of her caliber and her awards harvested in different
international festivals will lose value just because she has a history with illegal drugs.

Nora has been lording it over in local awards derby via her films: Himala, Minsay Isang Gamugamo, Ina Ka Ng Anak Mo,
Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos, Atsay, Bona, Andrea Paano Ba Ang Maging Isang Ina, Bilangin Ang Bituin Sa Langit, Minsan
May Isang Ina,Bulaklak Ng City Jail, Mga Uod At Rosas, TBird At Ako, Bakit Bughaw Ang Langit making her a perennial
winner/nominee.

Here are the international awards won by Nora to prove to all and sundry that she deserved the award (only her past
personal life and alleged drug use delayed the conferment.)

One thing that struck me the most is how she have adopted at least 3 babies in her care along her journeys but ended up these babies of being famous themselves in their later years. Also, they've been good persons in or out of showbiz. No one in my recent memories could have done that but Nora Aunor. Her success in showbiz carried her with some ups and downs in her life but the Children she have reared and cared for were her biggest trophies and achievements in her career. One highlight also is about her rivalry with Vilma Santos in all Showbiz activities that became so intense during the height of their careers. It came to a point that every Filipino will be identified either as Vilmanians or Noranians but the stars themselves didn't take it personally amongst themselves. What they have done with the contribution they made in showbiz added spice, color and taste that touches the lives of every Filipino People for years now. Just like in Politics, The Citizens are either for Aquinos or Marcoses. These two families have shaped the lives of every Filipino as well for half the century already, at least 50 long years.

The scope and the extent of your comment can be divided into 2 subgroups ... 1). her adoption of Anglo-Fil babies
and 2). the Nora Vilma rivalry in thespic abilities and box-office supremacy. But let's talk about the latter - because
talking about Nora Aunor is larger than life - meaning colossal, epic, extraordinary, towering, big, and imposing. She
was the Superstar- and considering her longevity, we are talking of history here, decades of mass hysteria, and showbiz
frenzy. And their rivalry was the most celebrated one in the history of Philippine Cinema.

Marked by fanaticism, box office, a rigodon of team ups with senior stars and the bankable leading men, and a deluge
of choice movies and performances, they can command millions in talent fees, and they were given the freedom to
choose their directors, the scriptwriter, and the project - this phenomenon is a feat not duplicated since. Though many
stars have emerged, in the succeeding generations since and arguably have eclipsed Nora or Vilma in terms of popularity
and box office appeal, nothing could be compared to the rivalry of Nora and Vilma - not even the Sharon -Maricel, Amalia
- Susan, or Gloria Nida.

Celebrity rivalries are often cultivated by the media. Let's say if a showbiz magazine releases the box office results
of two movie stars today, expect their respective fans to growl at each other the next day. The competition before
was so intense. Word war was rampant. Clashes happened in the streets of Manila. The fan clubs tried outdoing each
other in terms of gimmicks and projects for their idols. And the movie press was divided into two: either you are
pro-Nora or pro-Vilma.

But the two protagonists have maintained their friendship ever since as they called themselves "kumare". You can
seldom see them rubbing elbows with each other, but the respect and the reverence they show each other is second
to none. The proof of the pudding was when Nora Aunor was nominated as the National Artist, Vilma Santos went
out of her way to declare support for her rival.

Vilma is a perfect foil to Nora. She had her own list of acting awards and haunting performances tucked on her sleeves.
Now that Nora won the National Artist award, expect that Vilma loyalists will lobby for her in the next years to come.
And this time, it will be Nora's turn to extend her kumare her warm support.

ALL BAD ASS VICES SUCH AS DRUGS, LIQOUR, CHAIN SMOKING, GAMBLING, PROMISCUITY, CORRUPTIONS IN THE GOVERNMENT, ABORTION, WAR CRIMES, GRAFFITIS, PROSTITUTION, HOMELESSNESS AND OTHER CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES SHOULD BE CONTROLLED AND STOPPED WITH STRICTER RULES AND REGULATIONS BY THE GOVERNMENT. It's about choosing the right script and storylines so that it could bring hits and box office success. Most of Vilma's or Nora's success were from social relevant movies. They were probably choosy with the projects that they would have to work with.

I am not a fan but our teacher used to bring CDs of her movies and discuss them in class. So our class has followed
her movies closely just like a fan, as our teacher always emphasized art appreciation in everything he does.

When we watch her films everyone focuses on the acting, the direction, cinematography, sound, the script, the
production design, and editing. When reviewing the movie's totality some of us even identify symbolism which
is rarely discussed in an English class but we did it anyway. For Example green light symbolizes go or proceed,
the rainbow symbolizes hope and promise and fire symbolizes destructive emotions like hate or anger.

She partially taught us different acting styles and Nora is using Method acting while Vilma utilized the Body
and Soul type of acting.

This is the reason why I wrote about Nora (despite the stigma attached to her followers as the bakya crowd)
but I really don't care less if somebody associates me with this, but thanks to my teacher he has taught us a
lot in art appreciation, and he made Nora and Vilma as the vehicle and despite kolehiyalas mocking down at
them, it is not the beauty or how diminutive they are ... it is the raw talent that make them stood up among
the rest of their peers.

As an artist, she should be. It is an injustice if Nora Aunor is still not named as national artist in cinema.

If you talk about arts and link it with drug use, should we condemn majority of the actors, singers, writers, editors, directors, agents in the US and Philippine film industry?
How about Andy Warhol and Jean-Micheal Basquiat , famous pop artists in the world also known to abuse drugs?

I think the super high pedestal they gave to this title is due to the fact there is a linkage to certain government subsidies until the national artists die. I do hope that immaculate criteria be removed, just talk about arts and the achievment , prestige and applause they gave to the Philippines.

When it comes to being Immaculate or Saint, is Nora not qualified to be such. During her long reigns in showbusiness, didn't she have adopted 3 babies and provided them a good future in their later years which they are all now enjoying with their own kids as well? The National Artist Awards should serves the second chance for her life considering that her drug use happened more than 10 years ago and all the obligations from court had already been fulfilled so that's why nothing has been pursued since then.

The main reason for Nora Aunnor's exclusion from the National Artist list in 2014 and 2018 was drugs.

I still remember what President Noynoy said: "when I was faced with the nominations, there was only one question,
and this is with regard to the title national artist. In my view, the honor and praise of a National Artist Award are given
to people who contributed a lot to the Filipino race and someone who should be emulated. If I give it to her, having a
history of drug use what message does it give to the Filipino people” Aquino said.

If the number of awards both international and local is the yardstick, Nora has more than enough CONTRIBUTED A LOT
and has given the Philippines enough honor more than anybody else. More than the rest of the National artist he approved.
And the president was contradicting himself. How can he say Nora was not someone we should EMULATE?

He should at least compartmentalize Nora as a person. Being an artist she is worth emulating ... but drug use is not.
And having a history of drug addiction doesn't have to do with being an artist. Gone are the days when presidents have
hackneyed and antiquated ideas on who to bestow these awards. It is so selfish of him to deny her the penultimate award.

In 2018, I also remember what the Presidential Spokesperson and Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo said:
"the 65-year-old actress is “still young” and “will be proclaimed as a National Artist in God’s perfect time.” At a press
the conference, he stated, “Her non-inclusion does not diminish her iconic stature as the country’s Superstar and her
significant contributions to film, theater, television, and music industries,” Nora Aunor being most known as Philippine’s
‘superstar’ for outstanding performances in movies such as Miracle, Thy Womb, and Three Godless Years, to name a few.

Panelo added that “Her non-inclusion is to spare Ms. Nora Aunor from the emotional and psychological torment coming
from the barrage of mixed reactions, the award will bring,” possibly referring to Nora Aunor’s involvement with illegal
drugs in 2014.

When Panelo said Nora is still young ... are they going to give it to her post-humously? And when is God's perfect time?
And saying that her non-exclusion will spare her from emotional and psychological torment ... well it already did. More
than what Panelo knows.

I know that the rank and title of National Artist is conferred by means of a Presidential Proclamation, but what really do
presidents know about art, music, Dance, Theater, Visual Arts, Literature, Film, Broadcast Arts, and Architecture or
Allied Arts? And what do they really know about the intricacies of giving an award, except perhaps asking if the recipient
has a criminal record, or in Nora's case does she have a drug history?

The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) should try to
reexamine this minute detail but an important one. Why can't they give the awards themselves, and why do they have
to ask for the president's approval?

Year in and year out, they are giving the National Artist award like it was a big sale in the mall. Had there been issues
like philandering or corruption, adultery, child abuse, tax evasion, or any cases involving moral turpitude that came out
with the past nominees? If there is (although we really don't want to know because it is all water under the bridge now)
what message does that give to the Filipino people?

If the exclusion of the nominee is political or maybe personal, as the president said" What message does it give to the
Filipino people?

What I felt was "They should not be playing GOD with the artist's awards. Nora was a blatant and a flagrant example,
there will be someone for sure in the near future who will suffer the same fate.

Good deeds aside, just like drug use, should not be part of the criteria. It should only focus on the arts and her achivements and impact to the the community, her country, the world.

That is what I was trying to tell everybody all along. The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and the National
Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) should be an independent body and should be free from interference
coming from Malacanang, What good does it give the country if the president still meddles, infringes, and encroach
in awards giving putting their weight on something, they should not stick their nose in.

I really hate to say this, but if Vilma Santos is the next nominee, she will suffer the same fate as Nora Aunor. If the
reason for delaying the conferment of the National Artist to her is political, then I will advise her to just treat the
whole process matter of factly. Otherwise years of waiting for this elusive award can be a heartbreaker.

As an artist, Vilma has no drug or police record. But as a government official, she was seen siding with ABS CBN in
their tumultuous fight for their franchise renewal ... and for sure her position may not settle well with the powers
that be.

And she can be misconstrued as Dilawan too. And Ralph Recto's record as senator will make matter worse ... his
positions did not escape the political radar of their opponents.
