For the safety of everyone I say MW2013 should just be held in a different country.

Indonesian muslim extremists might do horrible things to the girls. :%(( :%(( :%(( :%(( :%(( :%(( :%(( :%(( :%(( :%(( :%(( :%(( :%(( :%((

I highly suggest MWO to move the contest to another non-muslim country for the safety of the girls! They are just not ready for beauty pageants! China would definately be capable of putting a great show without many preparations!

Can't they move it to another country? Miss World still have the time. It will be held in September and we are in the beginning of June.
I think Julia should have thought twice before she decided Indonesia.....Don't take me wrong I love that country and it's beauty is magical but maybe they aren't ready for it.
Thailand in other hand is a nice choice too and Philippines?

Has anyone ever been to Indonesia here? I'm asking this especially to those who seem to have negative opinion abt Indonesia hosting this event. I don't know if it's a general feeling of hatred towards Islam and Indonesia having the biggest number of Muslim people or just lame jealousy... I just think that many of you don't know what Indonesia looks like don't know anything abt the culture or the people. You don't know that Islam just came in Indonesia very recently and that Indonesian Islam is influenced by local animism and layered previous religions such as Buddhism and Hinduism. It is a much more complex country than any other in Southeast Asia, diverse and rich: more languages, heritage, culture, ethnic groups spread in 17000 islands. It is a new democracy with a thriving civil society and an open public sphere where one can freely express itself. Economically, it has the 5th highest GDP per capita in SEA just behind Thailand and above Philippines. It has one of the most important middle class in Asia and is a member of the G20.
I'm sorry but many of you sound like uneducated and uncritical persons full of stereotypes who satisfy themselves with vulgarized ideas from the media... I think Miss W should be seen as a chance for a country like Indonesia to show that it is capable of hosting this kind of event (not everyone have to like it) even if it has to compromise on certain things. it is disappointing for many of us that there ain't gonna be bikinis this year but why can't people just wish for the best to happen and not the worst? Why being so negative?
Anyway thx for reading if you did, don't even know if people can be receptive to this anyway...

you guys need to relax, and I'm wondering why some people here talk like they know Indonesia better than its native? and describing Indonesia like the home for extremist, really?

FYI Balinese more than ready to welcome Miss World contestants, how do I know? because I am Balinese, and I can feel the atmosphere when I go back to my home province. It's really sickening how people react negatively about this issue, Indonesia is the best place to host this pageant that's why we won the bidding last year.

no amount of rantings and immature complains can turn us down ;/))

OMG you stole my words, yes I can feel the hatreds and jealousy, I'm not moslem but I feel bad for our moslem compatriots in this forum who reading this thread. the way people describing islam is really make me vomit. insensitive and clueless.

The thread was penned by "jmgemini" and there was a heated debate as to the pros and the cons of Indonesia hosting the annual pageants respectively. It's most ardent respondent was a Adrian Klemman and Ms S. who were trying really hard to convince the readers that Indonesia can mount and host the pageants succeessfully.

You have a point but you can't blame people for overreacting with some of the things we hear about everyday. The people in charge seem to have it under control, the press has a way of blowing thing out of proportion.

The Indonesians of this board should not be offended simply because some here, myself included, are concerned for the girls' safety particularly when we're hearing about protests by right wings Muslim groups. All it takes is one lunatic to do damage.

I'm not at all familiar with the politics in Indonesia but a friend of mine who is told me today that the Indonesian government has become much more conservative in recent years and is heavily influenced by right wing political groups. The political climate there isn't as rosy as some here want us to believe.

Sorry to burst your bubble, I don't get offended by people here, I just want to get their fact straight and not parroting around, most people here just clueless about what really happens in my country, and your friend is wrong, there is no such a thing as right wing muslim groups influencing government since our country is not moslem dominated in political term.

Mr International was held in Indonesia before without any controversy or protests but this a large scale beauty pageant that will put this country to the test if they can this successfully. If they held SEA games very successful why not this one or just a fear by the fans of a repeat in Nigeria 11 years ago?

I don't have to be a pig to know how it feels to lay in the mud. Oooops. I'm sorry for being politically incorrect. Muslims are repelled by the very idea of a pig.

This is exactly what is wrong with muslims in Indonesia. They want their religion to be above criticism, and yet, everytime I check they are quiet when their extremists threaten to blow up people because they are "too western". Why on earth did you bid to host the event in the first place? Muslim extremists in Indonesia threaten to dismantle Miss World "by force", and because of what this implies about everyone's (including the candidates') safety, we reacted. Instead of criticizing the muslim extremists in their midst who are thratening violence against the innocent, most of the Indonesians in this forum criticize the members for calling them out on their intellectual backwardness. Who cares if Indonesia is a member of G20, or if it is this or that or the other. The fact is, there is a vocal group in that country that is threatening to dismantle Miss World "by force". Who, in this day and age threatens to use force against a beauty pageant? Instead of being too defensive about Indonesia's place among the civilized countries in the world, why don't rational and peace-loving Indonesians rail against the muslim extremists in their country?

Oh yes, Indonesian muslim extremists threaten to use force to stop Miss World from happening, and people who are speaking out against this are "insensitive and clueless". If you want your country to be respected, you need to comport yourselves in a way that is deserving of respect. You guys cannot even push through with a Lady Gaga concert. I understand that Lady Gaga can be a bit raunchy, but come on, even the honored film, Schindler's List, was banned in Indonesia. I have no problem with the choices that you make as a country. If you do not want to welcome Lady Gaga, and if you want to censor films like Schindler's List, that is your choice. But why did you agree to host Miss World when you could not even defend it against your insane and violent extremists? It is not as if it came as a surprise to you that Miss World has a swimsuit portion, so why are you now demanding that the contestants wear a ridiculous sarong? I have not heard of anything more absurd. You might be Indonesian and muslim, but I am not, and thank God (whoever I conceive Him to be), I am not bound by your code of silence.
