Vivid wrote:Has anyone ever been to Indonesia here? I'm asking this especially to those who seem to have negative opinion abt Indonesia hosting this event. I don't know if it's a general feeling of hatred towards Islam and Indonesia having the biggest number of Muslim people or just lame jealousy... I just think that many of you don't know what Indonesia looks like don't know anything abt the culture or the people. You don't know that Islam just came in Indonesia very recently and that Indonesian Islam is influenced by local animism and layered previous religions such as Buddhism and Hinduism. It is a much more complex country than any other in Southeast Asia, diverse and rich: more languages, heritage, culture, ethnic groups spread in 17000 islands. It is a new democracy with a thriving civil society and an open public sphere where one can freely express itself. Economically, it has the 5th highest GDP per capita in SEA just behind Thailand and above Philippines. It has one of the most important middle class in Asia and is a member of the G20.
I'm sorry but many of you sound like uneducated and uncritical persons full of stereotypes who satisfy themselves with vulgarized ideas from the media... I think Miss W should be seen as a chance for a country like Indonesia to show that it is capable of hosting this kind of event (not everyone have to like it) even if it has to compromise on certain things. it is disappointing for many of us that there ain't gonna be bikinis this year but why can't people just wish for the best to happen and not the worst? Why being so negative?
Anyway thx for reading if you did, don't even know if people can be receptive to this anyway...
I don't have to be a pig to know how it feels to lay in the mud. Oooops. I'm sorry for being politically incorrect. Muslims are repelled by the very idea of a pig.
This is exactly what is wrong with muslims in Indonesia. They want their religion to be above criticism, and yet, everytime I check they are quiet when their extremists threaten to blow up people because they are "too western". Why on earth did you bid to host the event in the first place? Muslim extremists in Indonesia threaten to dismantle Miss World "by force", and because of what this implies about everyone's (including the candidates') safety, we reacted. Instead of criticizing the muslim extremists in their midst who are thratening violence against the innocent, most of the Indonesians in this forum criticize the members for calling them out on their intellectual backwardness. Who cares if Indonesia is a member of G20, or if it is this or that or the other. The fact is, there is a vocal group in that country that is threatening to dismantle Miss World "by force". Who, in this day and age threatens to use force against a beauty pageant? Instead of being too defensive about Indonesia's place among the civilized countries in the world, why don't rational and peace-loving Indonesians rail against the muslim extremists in their country?
