Project Runway Designers' Wedding Dresses for Kate Middleton

Designers from all eight seasons of "Project Runway" submitted their fantasy sketches for Kate Middleton's wedding gown.

Image
Daniel Franco
Seasons 1 & 2
Swarovski crystals applied on Chantilly lace on an 11-foot train. Top bodice dips in back. Lace shirred for dreamlike volume. Satin-back crepe silk dress cut on the bias. Bouquet of creamy white daffodils, the national symbol of Wales.

Image
Nora Caliguri
Season 1
"I focused on the pieces I’ve seen Kate wear, and my favorite type of wedding dress to design: a modern one. My design accentuates her waist and has structure. A sense of sexiness is still very important, so I envisioned an open back and sheer top that shows just enough skin. It’s youthful, pretty, chic and classic."

Image
Kara Saun
Season 1
“This gown embodies the same daring nature and beauty as the soon-to-be princess. Exuding romantic sophistication, with the body-conscious shapes that she has become known for. The ultra-luxe elegance is the ultimate fit for Kate as she continues her rise as one of the dynamic fashion icons of our time. The dress is available in red or white.”

Image
Nick Verreos
Season 2
“Ivory silk Mikado column gown, featuring hand-sewn Swarovski crystals, with high bateau neckline, drop-shoulder and plunging back detail, and a fit-to-flare silhouette. An antique Chantilly lace and silk tulle veil and detachable exaggerated cascading train give a dramatic effect along with the 'Spencer Crown' that Princess Diana wore to her wedding.

Image
Heidi Elnora
Season 2
"Kate's gown represents a new era of royalty. Her signature look is very simple and clean. The gown that I designed for her reflects her classic sense of style with a royal flair."

Image
Emmett McCarthy
Season 2

Image
Mychael Knight
Season 3
"Young, fresh, and regal. The mermaid silhouette plays up the future royal’s fantastic figure. The dress is sexy, but the tulle detail and peplum give the dress a playful feel. I added a belt to give this refined gown a modern edge."

Image
Malan Breton
Season 3
"I would love to see Kate Middleton in something nontraditional for the Western world, a dress inspired by the colors of Asian weddings. For example, my OUI for Mattison by Malan Breton gown in Venetian red would be a modern and youthful twist to a classic English wedding, adding a splash of color to her already beautiful complexion."

Image
Johnathan Kayne
Season 3
"The bodice and length of this gown are three-dimensional Chantilly lace accented with real gold and silver embroidery, and delicately beaded with Swarovski crystals and real pearls. The portrait collar is silk taffeta. The box-pleated silk taffeta hostess skirt is detachable. This silhouette will accentuate Kate’s best features.

Image
Vincent Libretti
Season 3
"I see Kate as soft, easy and modern, yet sophisticated in a natural sort of way."

Sweet P
Season 4
"The pouf skirt with long train is dramatic, as a royal wedding should be, and a reference to old-style glamour, which Kate seems to embrace. The beaded form-fitting dress underneath feels young and modern, and the veil is an homage to the feathered hats she likes to wear."

Image
Rami Kashou
Season 4
"Kate exudes a sense of effortless elegance. I wanted to create something that celebrates beauty, romance and elegance and that also involves a delicate and detailed handcrafted couture quality."

Image
Simone LeBlanc
Season 4
"Kate's look should honor the historical significance of the occasion and stays true to her fresh and youthful energy. This combines tradition with her modern sensibility - a Victorian lace bodice has a deep V-neck that feels current but still modest. The voluminous skirt and train will pool beautifully and feel like they fill the cathedral, yet the high-fitted waist and wrapped belt will accentuate her lean and elegant figure."

Image
Carmen Webber
Season 4
"I wanted to evoke a Spring Garden Goddess with this look: antique ivory silk satin with pleated silk chiffon on the bodice and skirt, with a seven-foot train. It is worn with a sheer lace cropped shrug, hand-embroidered in pearlized metallic thread. Flowers with silk, velvet and chiffon petals decorate the shoulders and the hat."

Image
Leanne Marshall
Season 5
Low-back off-shoulder mermaid gown with lace overlay bodice and a floral detail swooping skirt.

Image
Wesley Nault
Season 5
"Kate has such a classic, effortless style. I wanted to create something soft while keeping it a bit whimsical with an asymmetrical drape, hand-appliquéd lace and crystal beading fading up from the hem and wrapping the waist.

Image
Keith Bryce
Season 5
"I wanted to create something that was progressive, elegant and fit for a princess. A design that could transcend recent trends and be fashionable while being timeless. A natural waistless look, with extra volume created out of layers of crinoline, and a rounded top, completely embellished with a variety of pearls and diamonds in various sizes. The top then carries past the waist and tapers in several areas towards the bottom. I created a matching oversized bow to exaggerate the opulence of the dress and to frame in her face."

Suede
Season 5
"I've combined my SUEDEsays™ by Simplicity only skirt pattern and my Natalie Portman–judged winning look from Season 5 into one fantastical wedding look for Kate to rock down the aisle, including a four-ply-silk corset with layers and layers of bias strips. Kate rocks a biker-style hat and veil to be ultra modern."

Image
Jennifer Diederich
Season 5
"The design is a classical statuesque silhouette with a touch of whimsy in the detailing. The golden embroidery and tulle sleeves were inspired by the beauty and mystery of the stars and clouds."

Image
Joe Faris
Season 5
White diamond-quilted leather corset bodice with heavy brass zipper, denim stonewashed ball skirt with British flag lining and brass pyramid studs.

Image
Christopher Straub
Season 6
"I would dress Kate in this piece. Made with a soft blue dupioni silk paired with delicate white ruffles, this dress is accented with pearl beading to create architectural interest. I do."

Image
Althea Harper
Season 6
“I envision a beautiful satin dress that is fitted through the hips to show off her beautiful figure, and then full at the hem for a dramatic effect. It will have delicate lace paneling at the waist, a large satin bow to draw attention to Kate’s small waistline, and an open neck to contrast the voluminous hem and train.”

Image
Qristyl Frazier
Season 6
"This special bride is feminine, stylish and romantic. She reflects sensuality and youthful, elegant sophistication. The dress is silk and silk charmeuse decadents, soft handmade pearl and lace with an extended 25-foot long train that is easily detachable to showcase the asymmetrical sway of the full length gown.”

Image
Carol Hannah Whitfield
Season 6
"My plan would involve a removable overskirt. There would be a more traditional ball gown silhouette for the ceremony, but sexier modern gown for the party. Make that paaarrrr-ttaaaayyyy!"

Image
Epperson
Season 6
"Kate is a natural beauty with a twist. She's classically beautiful and wholesome ... and seems to appreciate the utter fantasy of this moment. My design brings these characteristics together for a modern take on a traditional theme. Kate Middleton is the 'new' princess."

Image
Irina Shabayeva
Season 6
"I would love to see Kate in a gown that is both modern and traditional. I love this gown because it's youthful and regal at the same time. It will accentuate her waist with the Swarovski beaded detailing."

Image
Ramon-Lawrence
Season 6
"Kate should wear something very contemporary and modest, befitting her age and upbringing. This silk charmeuse strapless gown, with the bodice covered in chantilly lace and adorned with pearl and diamond detailing, matches that description. It's simple, modern, timeless."

Image
Nicolas Putvinski
Season 6
"In a perfect world Kate Middleton would walk down that church aisle in a full gown made out of glittering gold and silver feathers."

Image
Shirin Askari
Season 6
"This would be a perfect look for Catherine because it's elegant, luxurious and enchanting ... a fairytale princess come to life."

Image
Seth Aaron Henderson
Season 7
"The bodice is tailored, draped and fitted, made of fine white glove leather lambskin, and boned and lined in sateen. The skirt is tailored and structured to flow, made of silk taffeta, with contrasting color on the side paneling's underside. The veil is silk and silk organza."

Image
Emilio Sosa
Season 7
White silk-face satin with draped bodice and Wedgwood-blue sash.

Image
Jesse LeNoir
Season 7
"The dress is white with lace overlay on the top portions where the lines are, and the bottom skirt portion has a silk chiffon overlay for an additional whimsy. The veil is based on Kate's fondness for fun and stylish headpieces."

Image
Christiane King
Season 7
"This gown is sure to bring the good luck of 'something blue' to the royal wedding. It has the perfect mix of feminine elegance and quiet sophistication that Kate is all about. Made of a luxurious double-faced satin organza with blue ombre at the floral details, the use of color gives it a unique quality fit for a princess."

Image
Mila Hermanovski
Season 7
“I would love to see Kate in something more modern than conservative, so I designed a sleek and simple silhouette. I think she can pull off the high neckline because of her height and great figure. It is strong yet feminine. I used duchesse satin and silk tulle with tiny scattered Swarovski crystals, so she looks like a modern princess.”

Image
Jesus Estrada
Season 7

Image
Ben Chmura
Season 7
"I created a futuristic yet regal sensibility with an iridescent appliquéd pattern on a silk chiffon sheath over the gown, and an asymmetrical neckline, paneled geometric bodice and cutout back. A sheer capelet eliminates the need for a veil and provides the right degree of modesty."

Image
Jason Troisi
Season 8
"This is a mixture of past and future. Using silk and leather cut like lace, this represents the essence of beauty and is absolutely breathtaking."

Image
Michael Costello
Season 8
“I think Kate would look amazing in this. The dress is off-white silk and tulle. Squares draped to perfection with a diamond incrusted bow and a delicate lace veil.”

Image
Kristin Haskins Simms
Season 8
Custom wedding dress features cascading encrusted jewels and chantilly lace.

Image
Sarah Trost
Season 8
"There's classic styling, a neckline following Britain's new sweetheart, a dash of royal purple at the waist and hemline, mesh cap sleeves, a circular skirt to accentuate the flow of her walk, a fully boned and corseted top, and a sprinkling of diamond accents to add dynamic sparkle."

Image
Ivy Higa
Season 8
"Kate is sophisticated, classy with a modern yet timeless elegance. The gown I created encompasses those aspects of her; it's beautiful but isn't overbearing of her natural beauty."

Image
AJ Thouvenot
Season 8
"This doesn't meet any of the standards of a royal wedding, but then again, wouldn't that be fun? It has a fitted bodice with structured ruffles, and a full skirt with touches of pink to bring forth thoughts of cotton-candy clouds."

Image
Peach Carr
Season 8
"The fitted dress is white silk dupioni, with ivory strips encrusted with clear rhinestones forming a modern twist on a tartan, a nod to the royal family. Peeking out from the hem is a platinum silk tulle ... an homage to Kate's coal-miner ancestors. The cuffs ... make it a Peach! Modern but traditional at the same time."

Image
April Johnston
Season 8
"Kate should wear something royal and elegant with a dark romantic ambiance: hand-dyed chiffon and organza layered on the bottom, and for the top, an embellishment of dark red hand-beading."

Image
Mondo Guerra
Season 8
"I really wanted to design something that would be over the top. A larger than life ballgown (having undertones of lavender and periwinkle) with flowers trickling down the bodice into the gown, accented with a black velvet sash, topped off with a crown and diamond accented veil."

Image

Prince William and Kate Middleton, aka the new Duke and Duchess of Cambridge
Grade: A-

The bride was absolutely breathtaking this morning in her Alexander McQueen gown. Creative director Sarah Burton used hand-cut English lace and French Chantilly lace throughout the bodice and skirt, while the ivory and white satin gazar skirt was designed to emulate a flower. How lovely! We liked Kate’s sweetheart bodice and the lace sleeves, and her ensemble looked both retro and modern at the same time, especially with her hair refreshingly worn down. It reminded us of Grace Kelly’s wedding gown, only more wearable. The 1936 Cartier halo tiara was lent to her by Queen Elizabeth, but her diamond drop earrings were wedding present from her parents.

William wore a Colonel of the Irish Guards uniform, which features a scarlet red jacket, blue sash from the Order of the Garter, and a forage cap. The Army's honorary Irish Guards position, which he earned in February, is his highest military title. William stood tall and proud in the bright color, but his best accessory was his glowing smile when he finally saw Kate at the altar.

Fashion experts review Kate’s wedding dress
By Sarah Bernard

After months of speculation, The Dress was finally unveiled just before 6 a.m. ET. And the reviews are in. To get the fashion world’s reaction we caught up with European Editor at Large for Vogue, Hamish Bowles, and we sought the expert opinion of ELLE's Joe Zee, who took time off from his Sundance Channel show, All On The Line, to give us his initial take.

It’s a unanimous victory. Kate’s ivory and white satin gown with a sweetheart neckline and long-sleeved V-neck lace overlay has cemented Kate’s status as a fashion icon. By choosing Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen, a quintessential British designer, she proved her allegiance to her country and her worth as a newly minted style star.

The look was fittingly dramatic but also refined and elegant. There was none of the flounce and girlishness of Diana’s gown. Kate reportedly did her own makeup and kept her gorgeous long hair half up and half down. In other words, she looked like herself. Her modest elbow-length veil was held in place by a Cartier “halo” tiara lent to her by the queen.

ELLE’s creative director, Joe Zee, likened Burton’s creation to Grace Kelly’s wedding gown, which also had a lace bodice and full skirt. Vogue’s Hamish Bowles, was thrilled with Kate’s choice. Fittingly, the Met’s Costume Institute gala on Monday honors the late Alexander McQueen. No doubt Kate’s dress will be much talked about evidence that his legacy continues.

Kate Middleton's dress resembled Grace Kelly's—but just how similar were they?

Image
When Kate Middleton arrived at Westminster Abbey and revealed her stunning, elegant wedding ensemble, the world gasped. The dress—designed by Alexander McQueen protégé Sarah Burton—was classic and understated, evoking the quieter glamour of decades past. Fashion critics immediately began comparing the look to that of another commoner-turned-princess, Grace Kelly. Upon closer inspection, the similarities are undeniable. But was it intentional? Read on for our (slightly obsessive) investigation.

Difference: The train. Kate Middleton's was more than two meters long and adorned with reams of hand-embroidered lace.

Kelly married Prince Rainier in 1956 wearing this silk, lace, and taffeta confection by MGM wardobe designer Helen Rose. It has a comparatively cropped train.

Difference: The headpiece. Kelly attached her veil to a delicately beaded Juliet cap.

While Kate's veil was attached to a Cartier tiara, lent to her by the Queen as her "something borrowed."

Difference: Dress volume. Without Kelly's layers of taffeta, Middleton is left with a sleeker silhouette.

As seen here, Grace Kelly's dress is simply more "poufy."

Similarity: Lace sleeves. It's here that the new princess may have gleaned the most inspiration from Kelly's look. In this way, the two designs are nearly identical.

The feminine see-through sleeves of Kelly's gown have been replicated for some of the world's most famous brides, including, recently, Ivanka Trump.

Difference: Neckline. Middleton's deep-V is more modern and risqué than anything Kelly could've pulled off in 1956.

Kelly's dress features a buttoned-up "swan" neckline.

Similarity: Nipped-in waistline. Middleton's showed off her figure to gorgeous effect.

...as does Kelly's.

Difference: Hair. In another modern and unfussy move, Middleton wears her hair loose and down.

Kelly's hair was tight and neat in a sleek chignon.

Difference: Buttons. Kate's fall down the back of her dress.

Kelly's frock is buttoned nearly to the neck giving her a demure, almost prim, appearance.

Similarity: Flowers. If there's one detail that makes us believe the Middleton-Grace Kelly comparison was intentional, it's in their bouquets. Both are relatively scaled down and organic-looking with green flourishes and tiny white blooms.

Seriously, check it out.
