KAWAYAN, BILIRAN

Today's Covid Craze fashion presentation made me realize a lot of things.

One of which, is to always protect ourselves through wearing masks wherever we go and wash and sanitize our hands all the time. However, wearing masks also has bad effects to our bodies as too much carbon dioxide may arise if we use masks excessively. This build-up may result to 'Hypercapnia' and can cause headache, dizziness, and complications such as seizures and loss of consiousness. Thus, for us not to acquire hypercapnia, I suggest we only use face masks on short stints as a complementary measure to social isolation.

Second, is that, I realize and appreciate more the efforts of our nurses, doctors and medical staff and all those who are at the frontlines! Through this activity I learned their struggles of wearing full personal protective equipments for hours without taking it off even if they want to go to comfort rooms, just so because wearing full PPEs also take hours to wear. And to come to think of it, they are doing all these to be able to serve and save lives.

Our frontliners need all our respect. If you have friends who are nurses, doctors, medical staff and frontliners, I personally ask you to take a portion of your time to say 'Thank you' to them. Our words of gratitude may not be enough to compensate all their sacrifices, it is one way of showing our appreciation.

Salute to our frontliners!

BAGUIO CITY

#Covid-Craze
This activity has boosted our creativity and resourcefulness as candidates. I’m so glad to take part as we showcase Protective gears that we enjoyed making. Due to the magnitude of this pandemic we are facing a shortage of PPE’s. I hope we continue to prioritize our fronliners with supplies, while we, the general public, recycle the things that we have at home.

Sharing to you some items I have turned into PPE’s and protection for the rainy season:

Face Shields - Made from headbands, gluestick, and a recycled plastic envelope (#ZeroHungerPH to encourage others to reach out and donate to this cause).

Rubberized covering I use for gardening - Protective footwear (water resistant) with a ribbon to secure the shoe hole and make it more fashionable.

PU (Protective Umbrella) *Japanese inspired- made from plastic table cover and sewn to velcro material (to make it detachable). 360 degree protection that helps you maintain social distancing, keeps you dry from rainfall, and to give a good circulation of air to breathe in.

Cotton-polyster coat with scarf for warmth and to keep skin covered.

TACURONG CITY

It is undeniably that our country's economy drop vertically due to pandemic Covid-19. In my own point of view, as a Filipino one way to help get through this problem is to patriotize our beautiful local products.

As an eco-angel, I encouraged everyone to change our attitude and mindset in believing that imported things are superior than our native products. We have locally-made products which are of similar value and quality.

As a Filipino, it is our responsibility to do the right thing for our country and I am certain buying our own product shows great pride and patriotism towards our country.

Let us all live with love and joy in our heart and make a stand for our country.

MALITA, DAVAO OCCIDENTAL

Mangroves are important habitat-forming species at the interface of freshwater, marine and terrestrial ecosystems. As such, they provide a number of critical ecosystem services including protection from coastal erosion and storm damage, natural filters for pollution and sediment, carbon sequestration, and critical habitat for a wide variety of species, including nursing grounds for many coastal fishes. It is estimated that 80 percent of global fish catches are directly or indirectly dependent on mangroves. A world without mangroves would likely mean a world with fewer fishes, more coastal damage, and unknown ecosystem and public health consequences related to changes in pollutant, sediment and carbon cycles.
-Beth Polidoro

As a steward of God's creation and an advocate of maintaining the oceans cleaner, we should give importance on keeping our mangroves healthier. Let us learn to control our waste from reaching the oceans for it is not healthy to the marine biodiversity. Discipline is what we truly need for us to correct our bad habits towards mother nature. It is our only key to achieve the things that we truly want. Together let us help in maintaining our Earth because we do not do this for us but for the next generation as well.

MANDALUYONG CITY

"Nothing to do this weekend? Try this easy face mask DIY!

Since we can't show much of our faces now, facial masks have become a form of self-expression. Throughout history, people have used protective gear to convey a message to those around them. Wearing a mask isn't just about protecting ourselves, it's protecting our loved ones and the loved ones of others ultimately. We will likely have to find a new normal as it relates to expected social interactions - wearing a mask sends a message that we're all in this together and nobody should be embarrassed with wearing one. In fact, even sunglasses and hats started as simple items that were meant to protect, eventually becoming fashion staples!

As someone who lives independently, I thought it would be difficult to find resources for our #COVIDCraze challenge. Yet, it's just about being resourceful, which has been the feat during this coronavirus pandemic!

All of the materials I used for this face mask were REUSED (nothing was purchased!) from items in my closet: an old t-shirt, embroidered patches from a RECYCLED pair of jeans, hair ties, needle, thread, and even a bowl from my kitchen to measure!

The reason why we need to opt for options like this is because PPEs have become an additional threat to the world's oceans, specifically gloves, face masks, and plastic bags. The gloves and plastic bags can appear to be jellyfish or other types of food for sea turtles and the straps on the masks can post as entangling hazards. In February, OceansAsia already saw more than 100 masks washed up over the course of three visits to the beach only. Imagine what it is now with nobody there to clean the oceans and more people using face masks! The irony lands in that while we use PPEs to save lives, we also pose threat to humanity and nature. So, let's find a way to protect both public health and the environment!

This makes for a great project to keep yourself occupied for the next few days as well!"

MATI, PROVINCE OF DAVAO ORIENTAL

Dahican Beach is one of the most popular beach destinations in Mati City, adorned with its pure, fine, and white sand shore. It has become a prime destination for surfers and skim boarders. As a matter of fact, skimboarding, surfing, and frisbee sports have established a wide fandom among the young locals of Davao Oriental with Dahican being the favorite hub for tournaments in the region.

As a Matinian, I realize and appreciate the importance of the bodies of water. Our ocean provides us with countless benefits: it produces over half of the world's oxygen and stores 50 times more carbon dioxide than our atmosphere. As we celebrate the Month of the Ocean, let us all be reminded that we are stewards of God's creation and that includes the ocean. Therefore, let us start embracing our responsibilities and become catalysts of change for our beloved Mother Earth.

IRHA MEL ALFECHE | DAVAO CITY
Environmental Advocacy: “The Rehabilitation of Mangroves”
Since we’re residing near shorelines it gives more knowledge and learnings about the use of Mangroves and this advocacy is relevant in our country and it is sustainable and attainable.

ARIEL JAZMINE ROQUE | GENERAL SANTOS CITY
Environmental Advocacy: My environmental advocacy is Sustainable Animal Agriculture. Earth is composed of different organisms; every life plays an essential role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem. I want to give more focus on the essence of sustainable animal agriculture because animal production plays a massive part in human civilization. But, there are a lot of irresponsible human practices in this industry. I chose this advocacy because I want to be the voice of these animals that can’t complain about it and pave the way for the improvement of how they’re being farmed. Irresponsible livestock management can result in a lot of problems, and we want to avoid that. Thus, the practice of 5 R’s, proper waste disposal and management, and strong enforcement of relevant laws should be observed by all animal farms, big and small.

MIA BERNIELLE DELA CERNA | MALITA, DAVAO OCCIDENTAL
Environmental Advocacy: My advocacy is about Proper Solid Waste Management concerning a healthier ocean for healthier people. I chose this advocacy because I consider our bodies of waters as an essential element for us to survive. The Philippines is known for its bodies of waters and oceans which serves as one of our main sources of livelihood income especially in Malita. If we could not control and maintain its cleanliness, then nature will reciprocate its effect not only to us people but to the environment as well.

TALACOGON, AGUSAN DEL SUR

Protect yourself from COVID19, but make it fashionable!

As we continue the battle against this pandemic and as confirmed cases of COVID19 continue to rise, it is really recommended that everyone should wear proper and effective personal protective gears when we go out in public. Because proper usage of protective gears, with observance of physical distancing, and proper hygiene can really protect us from getting sick, and can help mitigate the spread of the virus.

But with our current quarantine situation, it is not practical for us to do some shopping just to buy the materials to make our own protective gears, because it will be expensive and unsafe since we will be exposing ourselves to the public. And so I believe that this is the perfect time to be resourceful, creative, and innovative. We just have to look for items that can be reused and recycled around our homes or offices.

As for me, here are my protective gears that I presented during our Covid Craze competition:

1. Creative Reusable face mask made from my old swimsuit, old garters, and recycled flowers for design.
2. Face shield made from recycled clear plastic from my nephew's old toy packaging. This face shield has snap buttons that can be attached to my face mask or hat depending on my choice.
3. A cute hat to protect me from the heat when I go outside.
4. For my body, I am using a polyester jacket that I bought from ukay-ukay last January.
5.To protect my feet, I am wearing moist resistant socks paired with my heels.
6. Bag made from water hyacinths- which is one of the products of our empowered Agusanon women. I added some recycled folders that I found in our office for added protection.

But we must still keep in mind that wearing protective gear is not enough. We must also observe physical distancing and proper hygiene to protect ourselves and our family from COVID19, or just stay at home to stay safe. Together, let's rise above the COVID19 pandemic and hope for a BETTER NORMAL.

DARAGA, ALBAY

#EcoNewNormal Tip of the Day: Be better by taking up “backyard” gardening! Support the Department of Agriculture’s campaign for FOOD SECURITY by growing your own food at home today! One of the most useful activities we can engage in is backyard gardening. Through it, we can help address the problem of food security in the event of another pandemic, which has been a concern since the start of the lockdown, by learning how to grow food ourselves or to do so as a community.

The past two months have shown us that we can no longer rely exclusively on commercial means to source our food. We’ve become acutely aware of the great benefits of having a sustainable food supply within reach at home. Through backyard gardening, we can feed our families, and it will be easier to encourage family members to eat fresh fruits and vegetables more often. It also allows us to have access to organic and reasonably priced fruits and vegetables, letting us save money and be aware of exactly what fertilizers and pesticides come into contact with our food. In times where social contact must be minimized, it will help greatly in lessening the frequency of our trips to crowded groceries/markets.

Backyard gardening will also be a great contribution to the environmental, since having such a garden means you will be reducing your carbon footprint, since getting your food won’t require as much transportation or refrigeration costs. If you were wondering how to kickstart your own garden at home, you can get in touch with the Bureau of Plant Industry in Quezon City, which is catering to requests for soil and seeds. In fact, my own starter kit came from them (Maraming Salamat po!). The Department of Agriculture also has local programs aimed at helping interested communities learn container gardening, aquaponics, and edible landscaping as part of their efforts to promote gardening in the Philippines.

Join us today! Resolve to do a Be Better initiative action point for a brighter tomorrow! Once the lockdown is lifted, I hope we will prioritize making better sustainable choices as we move forward into the new normal! What kind of plants would you want to grow in your own garden? Which gardening techniques between container gardening, aquaponics, and edible landscaping would you be willing to try?

ATIMONAN, QUEZON

It was a fun moment for me the day I met another fellow Eco Angel in our municipality that we featured on the 2nd episode of my mini online magazine/talk show Eco Angels Unite. It highlighted the image of Samahan ng Industriya ng Cacao na Pangkabuhayan also known as SICAP and the cause that it stands for. I was fortunate enough to be able to meet and talk with it’s Atimonan Chapter’s President, Andy Pineda and Vice President, Manolito Verastigue.

SICAP focuses on discovering, innovating and proliferating products from Cacao tree. In Atimonan, they are training individuals how to generate livelihood from Cacao such as wine, tablea and the most interesting one is the fossilized cacao leaves which is being used as raw materials for home displays and artworks.

This made me realize that we can come up with different products from the things we can see in our surroundings without destroying Mother Nature and we can be creative, productive and successful while being Eco friendly.

PANABO CITY

INVEST!

Investing is a word that we benefit, if we try.
Investing is good if your vision is a hope not only for yourself but for others as well.

May this be a reminder to us that as human beings, let us invest time to give back goodness to our environment, and i am pretty sure that it is not a downfall but a rising new home and hope for everyone of us.

Remember, INVEST not just to take profit from it but most especially to earn it.

BAGUIO CITY

Go for cruelty-free makeup brands as well as organic products.

Cruelty-free: Did you that 80% of the world still allows animals to be used in cruel tests for cosmetics? Countless rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters mice suffer worldwide. You can check PETA’s cruelty free list online to be aware and shop wisely.

Organic makeup: It’s the Eco-friendly choice ✅Conventional beauty products utilize petroleum-based ingredients and usually rely on a host of other chemicals for their production process. Much of this is done in some of the world's most beautiful and sensitive areas, like the Amazon rainforest, and miles of land are destroyed and stripped of vital wildlife every year. Going for organic or vegan products lessens the demand for these kinds of production and is a big benefit to the environment, considering the number of people using cosmetics. Organic makeup products also won't pose you with skin problems, since rest assured that it is made out of natural ingredients.

LIPA CITY, BATANGAS

It's not always sunshine and rainbows. I'm naturally someone who worries about everything and everyone. Of course this pandemic lingers on my mind. Are my loved ones who are away from me safe? How are the less privileged go through and how can I help them? How are we going to protect ourselves without a vaccine or without a cure? How can I provide for my loved ones and to the community? A lot of things worries me now more than usual because we all know that a pandemic like this which requires us to isolate ourselves and social distance from others is not normal.

All that we can do is to strengthen our faith to God. Always remember to be kind to others because you never know what they are going through amidst COVID-19 pandemic.

When those low moments come, allow yourself to slow down. Do more of the things that make you feel good like listening to your favourite songs, watching your favourite movie, reading books, cuddling with your fur babies, urban gardening, start planting seeds. Release those negativity and allow yourself to open up and share to those people you love and you know you can trust. I believe that there are things that we can relate with together. It is now more than ever that we should have check on each other's welfare and well-being. It is tough times like this that we should support each other.

We are constantly bombarded with negative messages and thoughts. To stay strong, and have a positive perspective, we need to have a system for renewing our minds-- a quiet time for reflection, a devotional time for prayer and inspiration. Together, we can get through this and we will have a healthy and bright future again.

STA ROSA, LAGUNA

Bringing back home our kababayans.

May 23, 2020, Saturday morning, we flew to Miami, Florida on a mission to pick up stranded Filipino Seafarers. Carrying 347 passengers, we flew from Miami - Los Angeles to refuel then went back to Manila, arrived at 5:30am, May 25, 2020. One of our longest-ever sector.

No matter how risky the situation is, we still managed to do it. With the proper precautions and wearing a complete set of PPE, we were able to bring our kababayans back safely and protected. And we still continue to.

In this pandemic everybody is affected, we should work hand in hand to help one another. Let’s protect our own & don’t leave anyone behind.

ILOILO CITY

Trees are vital. A person, who plants tree, plants a hope. A lot of people underestimate the effect of planting trees in the environment. Trees help clean the air we breathe, filter the water we drink and preserve wildlife habitat. However, according to a study, 3.5 billion to 7 billion trees are cut down annually. Because of deforestation, forests in the world like Amazon is at high risk. We are losing billions of trees, millions of animal species and thousands of plant species.

Moreover, anyone can contribute to the efforts against deforestation by planting more trees, using less paper through recycling and promoting sustainable choices. This is another way to curb climate change.

How we treat the forest is a mirror reflection of what we do to ourselves. Let us bear a respectful heart to one another and to our Mother Earth.

COMPOSTELA, DAVAO DE ORO

“Helping one another in times of need”.

Given the many challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, a show of solidarity exhibited through volunteering is heartening.

Last week, I was so happy because I was able to help with the repacking of relief goods. It may be a momentary assistance but it made me happy because I was able to contribute something to our community. As a student, who has no source of income, I think that being a volunteer is my little way of helping my fellow Compostelaños.

If you want to contribute something to others, there are 3 different ways to help during the coronavirus pandemic:

1. STAY AT HOME. This is the most effective way in helping our front-liners. As we stay in our homes, we are protecting ourselves from being infected with the virus but at the same time we are doing something for our frontliners and also protecting our family and surroundings. As we stay in our homes, we can breathe fresh air, start home gardening and relax ourselves.

2. USE SOCIAL MEDIA TO CONNECT WITH YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS. Since we cannot go outside, let us use our social media apps to communicate with our loved ones and share positivity to our timeline. Who knows our posts/selfie may inspire other people and put smile on their faces?

3. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF. Before you help others, make sure that you are taking care of yourself. Having an 8-10 hours of sleep, eating nutritious food, exercising and breathing fresh air is a must.

Let us all remember that together as one, we can combat this pandemic.

By: Armin P. Adina INQUIRER.net / 08:00 PM May 28, 2020

MAKATI CITY, PHILIPPINES—This year’s Miss Philippines Earth pageant, the 20th edition of the national beauty contest, is adapting with the pandemic by holding online events, and kicked off its series of pre-pageant competitions with the Dance Talent contest on May 28.

The competition was conducted via the Zoom meeting platform, where eight delegates performed their dance routines from their own respective locations.

Jamie Herrell, the second Filipino woman to win the Miss Earth crown, hosted the online program shown live on the pageant’s official Facebook page.

June Cyra Pineda from Talacogon, Agusan del Sur, topped the competition with her modern dance routine. Diana Rose Hidalgo from Allacapan, Cagayan, took home the silver medal with her performance of the “Tinikling.”

Iloilo City’s Tsina Jade Chu rounded off the winners’ circle with a hula dance presentation.

The Miss Philippines Earth had earlier embraced an online-centric competition with a series of “Beat COVID” Facebook live sessions with its former winners and current delegates discussing its advocacy on environmental awareness.

The next online event will be the “Best COVID Craze Outfit” competition on May 30, at 2 p.m.

On June 1, ladies in the Creative Category of the series of talent competitions will battle it out, while the singers will belt it out in the Singing Category on June 3.

Even the crucial segments of the pageant will be conducted via Zoom, with the 33 ladies competing from their own hometowns.

The judging for “Figure, Form, and Poise” will be on June 6, while the judging for “Beauty of Face” will take place on June 13.

On June 20, the ladies will be judged for their “Intelligence and Environmental Awareness.”

Even the fashion competitions will be held online—long gown on June 9, beachwear on June 11, the sportswear on June 16, and casual wear on June 18.

Pageant partner Hana Shampoo, meanwhile, will announce its 10 Miss Hana delegates on June 15.

All preliminary competitions will be shown live on the pageant’s official Facebook page.

The coronation ceremony is scheduled on either July 1 or 2, and will still be held online, with all the delegates parading from their own hometowns via Zoom.
