Other than Philippines, which Asian countries should be eligible for Reina Hispanoamericana?
Timor-Leste (former Portuguese colony)
Macau (former Portuguese colony)
Indonesia (Sulawesi and Maluku were former Spanish & Portuguese colonies)
Taiwan (some parts of the counties were former Spanish colony)
Malaysia (Malacca was former Portuguese colony)
India (some states were former Portuguese colony)
Sri Lanka (former Portuguese colony)

The title Reina Hispanoamericana suggests that it is for Hispanics from the Americas. It does not make sense to me that Countries with Spanish traditions, but are located outside the American Continent would qualify. Also, Brazil is in South America, but it is not Hispanic.

This, and your other comment in a similar thread. I feel like the title "Reina Hispanoamericana" just kinda sticks even though it's not longer applicable. They're more of a "Miss Latin World" or something these days lol


It's kinda okay that they added Spain and the Philippines because of shared Hispanic ties even if they are no longer in the American continents.

Adding Francophone (French-speaking) and Lusophone (Portuguese-speaking) countries was a bit of a stretch - Aruba, Brazil, Canada, Curacao and Haiti are not Hispanic; Portugal is neither Hispanic nor American. But at least all of them share Romance/Latin roots... to varying degrees.

The biggest offender is Australia. The closest link they have to the Hispanic world is when Luis Vaz de Torres crossed the seas between Australia and Papua New Guinea and gave his name to the Torres Strait. Everything else is pretty minimal


Anyway to answer ajsy0203's question, the best country to join among his choices would actually be Guam, Palau and the Marianas because those were actual Spanish colonies, thus Hispanic. Timor-Leste and Macau would be tied for second for their Portuguese heritage. Sri Lanka is a distant third.

India is a big stretch. Best to send a "Miss Goa" (Portuguese) or "Miss Pondicherry" (French) instead of representing India as a whole.

Malaysia and Indonesia are even bigger stretches. Even with Malacca, Sulawesi and Maluku having Luso/Hispanic influences, I don't think they'll really fit with RH as a whole.
