Last year, a manager from the other department named John injured his shoulder. He was on leave for 6+months. We got an email saying that if we want to donate money to help him pay his bills.
I did not know John that well, but I gave a little amount. And he thanked everybody for our generosity. This was August 2018.
Three months ago, in August 2019, our company did not do good and had to lay-off 2,000 employees from around the world. I did not know that I was on the "lay-off list" because I am still working with the company.
In the same month, in August 2019, I was told that I will be moving to a new department and will now be reporting to John.
I came to know John. Such a kind, nice boss. He did not tell me until last October 15, 2019, that I was on the "lay-off list". That he took me so I will not get laid-off. I thanked John, and I cried because I was so loyal to my old job for 12 years, working day and night with sweat & blood as the saying goes.
On October 16, 2019, I organized a Happy Boss's Day for John. As a team, we decorated his office with a signed balloon, posters, gave him a card, mug, parker pen and took him out to eat. The team never gave John a "Boss's Day " treat until I joined the team.
John told me that he wants to take the team to that Filipino place called "Gerry's Grill on November 7, 2019. John is Caucasian.
On Friday, October 18, 2019, John was so happy with our Boss's Day presents that he poked the balloon, inhaled the helium and was talking funny.
On October 21, 2019, sadly we found out that John has died.
I feel so sad and forever grateful to him for saving my job. John and I did not know each other until he took me to join his team. But I'm thinking that - that little kindness I gave him-that little amount I contributed when he was sick, made him saved me from getting laid-off.

Did you say he inhaled helium from the balloon at the party the day before he died? I strongly think that this incident contributed to his death because inhaling helium just for fun in order to sound like Donald Duck or The Chipmunks is actually dangerous. It can cause serious rupture and bleeding to the lung tissues. Thus, a person experiences an episode similar to a myocardial infaction, or heart attack, which leads to imminent death.

Yes, I was doing my Masters of Law (LLM) while working fulltime, having a baby and a sick husband. Yes, I finished my Law school at USC. I have yet to take the bar but I put the bar on hold because I am doing my MBA at Rice School of Business.
A lot of determination, a lot of sleepless nights, a little brain and a $100K student loan! A lot of working ones are doing this, not just me. If you think this is impossible, then I should give my back a pat!

Omg. I did not know that. He was also a diabetic. He had maybe low sugar and went out of balance.

Stanford University strongly discourages students from taking any kind of job be it part time or full time .
And they say it right at bat .
Otherwise students won’t survive staying in their university .
And this is under graduate studies , what more for post grad studies .

USC is not an Ivy League university but as we all know after their admission scandal , that so many students want to go there .
It’s highly competitive to be admitted there .

The TS must be on crack .
It’s just a wild fantasy.
Nobody can work full time ( 8 hours a day , 5 days a week ) and attend classes in a highly competitive university..
8 hours a day attending classes plus 8 hours a day working that’s already 16 hours ... so you have 8 hours remaining to sleep , eat , drink ,travel / commute , and studying . Actual studying happens at home/dorm . If you do advance reading , attending classes is just a review and if you don’t ... then it’s familiarizing yourself with the subject being taught . But studying and memorizing stuff happens at home/dorm and you can only do 2 hours of continuous reading and memorization ...you have to take a break ( 5-15 minutes )... then you do it over and over again until you’re done .
And yes ... it was taught to use by our professor who btw graduated summa cum laude ... that you can only do 2 hours of continuous reading and memorization..nobody studies 8 hours straight without a break .
So it’s 2 hours reading .. break .. 2 hours reading again ..:break then another 2 hours reading. ... that’s already 6 hours .. so the TS have 2 hours to sleep , eat , drink , etc . Ha ha .
That’s the reason why university students can’t work in weekends . It’s the time they can really dig themselves reading .
Working on weekends will take away your opportunity to do quality reading.
Yeah sure .. students do extra curricular activities and working on weekends is possible but it’s highly discouraged .

A student spends 8 hours attending classes .
Sleeps 6-8 hours .
Reads and studies at home/dorm for 6-8 hours .
So they only have a very volatile and tight 4 hours to eat , drink , shower , dress up and travel/commute .
Show us where in there working full time fits in that schedule .

It's easy to work full time and study full time in the U.S. The hardest thing is getting admitted to a university you want, but once you're in, the work load is actually manageable. The focus is analysis and critical thinking, unlike in the Philippines where the emphasis is memorization and rote learning, which takes more time.
Of course, if you're not exactly the brightest bulb in the chandelier (which I suspect is the case with many posters here), schooling will be a struggle for you even if you have all the time in the world.
Peace.

Sure you can work full time and go to college ... that is ...if you’re attending City College ( Translation : those ghastly schools with free tuition ) .
Not in universities like Stanford etc.
They expect everyone to be full time students .
They can work secretly sure but if they are in trouble failing or being kicked out ...they should not use working as an excuse . It will be rejected outright . They should not be working in the first place.
Funny that they make it as working is like a walk in the park . Even if you’re doing office work like geez it’s still 8 hours/day , 5 days a week .
A full time job is out of the equation .
What is being debated here is working on weekends ( part time job ) . Yes it’s possible but highly discouraged .

These people don’t realize that they already synthesized studying in it’s concentrated form .
Student attend 8 hour classes .
Sleeps 8 hours .
Read , study and memorize at home/dorm for roughly 6 hours .
2 hours to eat , drink , shower, dress , commute and be themselves.
That’s a fairly decent schedule .

I don't know why people who have not set foot on a university in the U.S. are busy imagining the daily schedule of college students here. For reference, please read:
https://thefederalist.com/2016/09/11/st ... -studying/In fact, there have been incessant complaints of grade inflation in Ivy League schools. Everyone gets an "A". However, it is difficult to get admitted to these schools, especially if you are Asian. I guess, I was just lucky.
But then again, not everyone's experience with schooling is the same. Not all of us spent the same amount of time studying. For instance, if not even De La Salle University in Taft Avenue would have anything to do with you, then I suppose, you will struggle wherever you go.

So law is easy and they allow students to have a full time job.
A science degree is tough and they have this draconian policy that no one should have a part time or full time job .
Hmmm.
Interesting .
An eye opener .

Sabagay law is relatively stagnant .
There’s nothing new to it .
It’s just twisting and reinventing what’s already there kung meron mang something new .
While science makes leaps and bounds at very rapid pace .
It constantly changes .
I bought major books just a little over a year ago ... but now I have to buy new ones kasi it’s revised already .

These mokongs essentially eh kumuha ng martilyo at pinukpok nila ang mga ulo nila .
They are saying that the academicians and intellectuals allow law students to have a full time job because taking law is easy .
While those taking a science degree ..: virtually eh mortal sin to have a job, doesn’t matter whether part time or full time .
Eh talaga naman ... like geez ... it’s all Greek to us ang being a full time science student tapos having a full time job . That’s insane . Sakto lang halos ang 5-6 hours /day na studying liban na lang if you’re gifted at may photographic memory .

This is what these dorks are saying ..
Eto ang schedule nya ...
1. Time to brush his teeth , shower and dress up : 15 minutes
2. Travel time from home to school : 15 minutes ( yes he’s that lucky , nearby lang ang school )
3. Attending classes : 8 hours
4. Travel time from school to work : 30 minutes ( lucky guy )
5 . Work time : 8 hours
6. Travel time from work to home : 30 minutes ( very very lucky guy . The stars are aligned in his favor)
That’s already 17 1/2 hours total .
He’s only got 6 1/2 hours left .
Upon arriving home
7. 15 minutes spending quality time with his baby and sick husband .
8. Sleep time : 6 hours
9. Upon waking up : 15 minutes eating breakfast and spending quality time with his baby and sick husband .
Total : 24 hours
No time to study at home.
Spends only 30 minutes quality time with baby and husband .
Sleeps only 6 hours a day and that’s everyday .
