5 THINGS TO LEARN AS A POTENTIAL PAGEANT CANDIDATE

Postby mrgary » Fri Jan 04, 2019 3:45 pm

1. KNOW YOUR FACE VALUE. What I mean here is the true sense of the word, "FACE". Please do not ever believe that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and that "inner beauty is more important than physical beauty". Bullshit! While these adages may hold true to some extent, however, these will not give you complete leverage in beauty pageants especially at Miss Universe where every single thing counts. Please know the limits and limitations of your facial beauty. When you disembark at the arrival area of your pageant destination, the first thing that everybody will notice is your face and not how well you do your vital signs as a nurse, or how kind you are to animals! You will not be parading yourself at the arrival area with your sphygmomanometer, or your exotic pet. Hell, no! You will be presenting your face to the world! If you think you're facially beautiful per world standard, then please file your candidacy for Binibining Pilipinas. If not, then stay in your own sitio, baranggay, or district as the beauty queen of your locale.

1986: Violeta Naluz

2. DO NOT MEMORISE YOUR ANSWERS. Please refrain from memorising your answers word-for-word because it's going to be a different ballgame once you are in the international arena especially in this IMG era where substance counts more than the spectacles of your swimsuit and evening gown presentations. You can probably get a free pass with your memorised answers at your local competition but it will soon bite you in the ass once you compete internationally and come in contact with the international press, judges and head honchos of the pageant organisation who will bombard you with questions that you may not be prepared to answer just because you do not have the memorised quotes to extract from your brain.

2003: Carla Gay Balingit and 2018: Eva Patalinjug

3. SHOW HUNGER IN YOUR QUEST FOR THE CROWN. Make your days count heading to your international competition. Be proactive in your training and do not take it for granted. Maximize the resources afforded to you. Have the upper hand when it comes to your styling, evening gown, swimsuit, so on and so forth but please be teachable. When the going gets tough and the tough gets going, know that a lot of hungry girls who lost at the local competition are willing to be in your shoe anytime. Hunger is the most important factor in winning the crown because it creates currents of passion and drive. When you're passionate to do something in your life, then you develop the initiative to help yourself and the determination to make your vision a living reality. When you are hungry to succeed, you also become a restless soul and when you become restless, your mind generates creativity and your gut points you to the right convictions. These become the precious moments when you start to think "outside the box". In other words, when you are hungry for the crown, you create your own vivid picture of success.

2005: Gionna Cabrera and 2018: Michelle Gumabao

4. LEARN TO ARTICULATE YOURSELF. It is imperative to express your thoughts clearly under extreme pressure. If the lack of interview skills is your weakness, then embrace the interview portion instead of dreading it. Get a mentor to hound you 24/7 until all your interview fears perish into oblivion. Draw from your broad life experience when you tackle a question and extract the "SHE" from it which is your "significant human experience" to create a foundation in your answer. Practise, practise, practise until the interview becomes your own practice. Be very cognizant about this lest your undoing will haunt you on social media . . . FOREVER!

2001: Jeannie Andersen and 2008: Janina San Miguel

5. CREATE A PLATFORM. The Philippines never runs out of causes that you can advocate and promote. Don't just get involved for the sake of joining pageants but learn to be committed as well. Learn to be the pig who gave up his life for the master's banquet than the hen who only laid an egg for her mistress. This is the stark difference between commitment and involvement. When you have a platform that you are committed to help, then everything you do will not become frivolous and the scope of your "why" in joining a pageant becomes larger than life.

Thank you, my good friend. Yes, the dark era was such a torture for all of us. Thank God for Venus Raj who ended the drought in Philippine pageantry.

Era of Dark Ages in Philippine pageantry, remnants of Marcos dictatorial regime where many things were subdued and restricted.

But how come we did well from 1972 up to 1975 at the Miss Universe? We even won the second Miss Universe crown through Margie Moran in 1973.

Great read Mrgary.

Very specific. I like your points. Now, that should be tge standard in pageantry. Specially in Miss Universe. Let us not send a delegate that is "pwede na". We are in the 2020's where total package should be.

I remember our dark era, when I lose hope to see Pinay Miss Universe crowned. Then viola! Pinay won the crown, not just one.

Hoping to see another in the next 5 years.

Thanks Mrgary!
PHILIPPINES is a legit Powerhouse in Beauty Pageant. Haters, deal with it!

Because those queens were educated before Martial Law. There was free dissemination of information via the free press, people were relatively better informed, and the quality of education in the Philippines was higher. The candidates from 1990 to 2009 grew up during Martial Law or shortly after the reconstruction of our democracy. Marcos made Pilipino the medium of instruction in public schools, and nationalism was emphasized more than the development of critical thinking skills. Dictators do not want subjects who can think for themselves, and sadly, Marcos was not an exception.

Naalala ko pa pagkatapos ni Mirriam manalo as 1st runner up , the next year puro "hay", puro sablay pinapadala.

I am still disappointed with Gumabao. If it is not for her height and gift of gab, many others can fill her place. Her representation in the pageant proper is what I consider a "sayang" moment of 2018. I give it to her that she is fully aware of her responsibility/ties but I can still smell her laxness as intentional which may be an act of protest, dissuasion from outside force/s or the harsh truth that she is only cut as sportswoman.

In short, a potential pageant candidate must learn self-awareness. A self-aware candidate knows her strengths and weaknesses, her advantages and disadvantages. She should also know that while being adjudge of appearance, her immersion in the current affairs of the society she lives in can make or break her. Beauty pageants are harsh but fans can always see through the lies of the candidates and the pageant as a whole.

I agree with Shamcey to some extent but in pageants especially Miss Universe, beauty cannot be sugar-coated. It's either the girl is beautiful or not. As a nation, it was alright for us to send the likes of Cortez, Naluz, Limpin, Lobaton, Andam, Balingit, Agustin, and Licaros before because we were still in the dark era but now that we have become a powerhouse, we need to safeguard our rise in pageantry because the stakes are really high. It will be detrimental for us as a nation and to our recent winners if we send an average beauty, or someone who looks decent only by a notch when cinematic make-up is on just because she is a smart talker. We cannot afford that same mistake anymore. The majority of us are already exhausted from defending abstract beauties like Togonon and Ibasco where facial beauty had to be desperately sought after and painstakingly searched. It's high time that we look for articulate glamazon Filipinas with real facial beauty.

Yes, myka, it is a huge challenge for all prospective candidates who are planning to compete this year. On the other hand, I'd rather have 5 beautiful and articulate glamazon Filipinas competing as official candidates this year than 40 of mostly average beauties.

Many candidates from other countries like Colombia with face value, they end up as clappers.

Philippines sent Rachel Peters and Maxine Medina both with face values, no win too.

It’s not the face that counts, it’s the complete package.
Yes, the face helps. But it’s not all that.

Again, it’s been proven time and time again!

And who says Rachel is pretty? She is not pretty but Maxine is. However, between the two, Maxine still managed to sneak into the top 6 but Rachel didn't despite the fact that both competed with a lot of Filipinos in the audience and Maxine had poor communication skills in English. Of course, it is always the complete package that counts which is why I always say, "beautiful, articulate glamazon Filipinas" in my post to describe the need we have for this year. That's why we need to maximize the resources we have by scouting for the ideal candidates outside our radii.

TBH, Cat was not the prettiest, face wise but she was cute enough, or say she’s pretty enough. But she has all the other qualities that made her stand out. However, Rachel and Cat were at the same level face wise, but ended up at different spots.

Many Philippine reps were not the prettiest but they managed to get higher placements. It’s the whole, not the parts.

Nobody disagrees with you about the "complete package" issue but I don't think Cat and Rachel are on the same level face-wise. Catriona is pretty but Rachel isn't. However, MJ Lastimosa and Rachel Peters are on the same level face-wise. Pretty average. Catriona may not be as pretty as Paulina Vega but Catriona had all the five aspects I mentioned in my thread to possess the complete package. Catriona is an articulate, beautiful glamazon Filipina while Rachel isn't.
