Miss Universe and Miss World will never admit to this, but it is important at this point, lets be real, especially in Miss Universe. Since 2016, the girls have to have a conversation with Steve Harvey once they place without translators there and I remember very distinctly that Miss Brazil 2016 Raissa did not know what Steve Harvey said because she did not speak enough English, did good enough in swimsuit to move onto evening gown but guess what, she was eliminated and probably because of her poor English! And as someone who is bilingual, let me tell you that relying on a translator is risky and does not give girls an advantage like people think.

There have been many cases where this was an issue but the first one that comes to my mind is Ariadna a few years ago. She is a great speaker and even though I do not remember exactly what she said or what the translator said the reason she gave the translator side eye in the final question is that the translator was saying something completely different than her actual answer to the question and understood enough English to know that. I have no idea what Miss Vietnam this year actually said but when the translator said "she thinks" instead of "I think" I knew it was over for her and the translator would probably just summarize or incorrectly translate what she said. Also I saw a youtube video of someone translating what Iris actually said in her final answer at Miss Universe 2016 and in comparison with what the translator said and it was nothing alike either.

When the girls are using translators, they are not in control of what the judges hear and it makes it a setback not an advantage. Whoever wins will also do a media tour in New York shortly after they are crowned with mostly English interviews so they have to be able to converse! If I were a contestant and did not know much English, I would invest in intensive English training so by the time the pageant happens, I would be fluent enough to answer questions and give out the answers I want.

At this point, if they want the competition to be fair, Miss Universe and Miss World need to make it either a requirement to be able to communicate in English or find a more effective way of translating the girls answers.

NO.

If you don't know how to speak English, then speak your native tongue. Language should not be a barrier. English will only limit the candidate's ability to speak her mind as truthfully and as concisely as possible.

The problem is not because the candidate cannot speak english, it's because of the TRANSLATORS.

With the recent Puerto Rico incident wherein she understands English and she knows how to speak English yet she still opted to use a translator, that's unfair to the other contestants.

I think they need to re-evaluate how the translators should be used. And for me, the best way to deal with this issue is to let the candidate answer first without any cut from the translator. This way, she will not have a chance to think of her answer and she will then need to be spontaneous and quick with her answer.

After she finished answering the question, then the translator should now be given ample time (1 or 2 minutes perhaps) to correctly translate whatever answer the candidate provided by reviewing the replay of her answer. If they need two translators to translate the answer, then provide one more. That way, the answer won't be lost in translation and the people and the judges will hear the answer exactly as it was given by the candidate.

As a spokesperson, of course YES. You will be representing IMG in every occasion, media included. ENGLISH is the universal language. During the Trump era, speaking english was not necessary to win. BUT i guess IMG changed the requirements. I guess they don't want an interpreter to act like a nanny to be with the winner everytime she goes out for a commitment. So, BETTER SPEAK ENGLISH !!!!!!!!! :=p

In this IMG era? Hell, YES! Having no interpreter for every social engagement that a Miss Universe has is not only cost-efficient but also cost-effective for the organisation. A penny saved is a penny earned, as the saying goes. A Miss Universe represents an American brand, hence, it is favourable for her to be fluent in spoken and written English. She becomes more productive for the organisation because of her accessibility with the English language. She will have more speaking and modeling engagements from sponsors worldwide. When these things happen, her productivity translates to more income generated for the organisation which will mean good business for MUO. A Miss Universe nowadays is not only a spokesperson for the organisation but also an international fundraiser for charitable causes and institutions. How can one raise funds if her proficiency in the English language is inadequate? A lot of these major charitable causes originate in the U.S. where most millionaire donours and benefactors reside. Thus, English is imperative.

There was no "incident" because even if someone speaks and understands a second language does NOT mean that that is the language in which she thinks or the language she feels the most comfortable speaking under pressure. I am 100% bilingual (better than some English natives) but I can assure you I am not going to risk my country's sixth crown on speaking my second language just because people would find it unfair otherwise. The final question is far more nerve wracking than the interview so I can assure a bilingual person may do worse forcing herself to speak in her second tongue. Not every bilingual person can speak both languages easily on the spot. Kiara said it herself, if I don't feel comfortable speaking English in that final question; I won't risk it.

Exactly, also she is an international ambassador and English is the most commonly spoken language worldwide and yes I can see why some would see it as "unfair" to add a language requirement but more people are speaking more than one language now than ever before, English was not my first language but my parents started having me learn when I was young and then I moved to the United States and now I speak it every day. Also on here, there are forumers from all over the world, from Asia, Latin America, Europe, a lot of which are not predominantly English speaking countries but we all still talk in English. Janine Tugonon made a very good point but Miss Universe was different then and oratory matters more than ever before and learning another language does not harm anyone in anyway, so I do not see why it would be bad.

International pageants should grow some testies and publicly make it a requirement for girls to speak a certain language, its unfair to those who don't learn thinking they don't need it when its becoming obvious that they do. Each years the interpreters get worse and worse, for Christ sake MGI had other queens who are not professional translators to do it.

Should language be a barrier? Of course not.

Is it a barrier in pageants like Miss Universe who are not putting enough effort of the translation department? Yes.

Just say its necessary so organizations can deal with it because when you don't have it as a requirement then its not wrong or unfair for girls to require translators, translators that should be able to do their job.

ABSOLUTELY NO!

AT Miss Universe, IN THE YEARS 2003, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014 AND 2016, THE WINNERS USED AN INTERPRETER :-* :-* :-*

Yes!

it's another expenses for the organization to spend money for interpreters. But from time to time, they will crown a non-english speaker if she is really worthy to win a crown. Those recent winners that used interpreters are not really english illiterate. Iris, Gabriela, Paulina etc can speak english. They're like Pia but chose to have interpreters for advantage. Catriona is like Olivia Culpo and Jennifer Hawkins born english speakers. We have yet to see a winner who does not speak total english like... .... fill in the blanks.

It's a distinct advantage for the candidate to be able to express herself in English being a universal language with conviction and confidence. As an Ambassador, it bodes well for her sponsors, and for the primary interests of the organization that she represents when she begins her reign to fulfil the requirements of her job. Her media interviews would be less stressful and taxing and she won't be adding the unnecessary burden to her expense book if she gets to travel globally without tagging an interpreter in her itinerary.

It’s a big advantage when talking English esp at Miss Universe. It would be easier for the judges to judge a candidate when talking in English, unless you have several Latina judges which can be advantageous or biased to Latina Spanish speaking candidates.

Talking in Spanish may trigger good and bad reactions (or scores) from the American judges mostly esp at Miss Universe as she may try to buy time intentionally, which is not fair to some people or fans and even to some candidates.

But don’t be like Puerto Rico who spoke English in the introduction and used Spanish in the Top five Q and A. She thought she could have tricked the judges (at least she tried to buy time to think about her response first when translator talked) and give better answer. It backfired. I think the judges saw that she was fluent in English in the introduction and used an English interpreter in the first Q and A. Judged perhaps thought it was obviously not cool and was doing it to buy more time, and left her behind not advancing to top three, her downfall. It’s a lesson learned for Denise Quinones, and let’s see what she would do next year.

In short, it depends on the judges. If they favored a candidate from the get go, she can talk in Spanish or other language and still win which happened before.

The judges may be forgiving to somebody like Vietnam who attempted and struggled in English but spoke with a heart, she could have been catapulted to top three and win if she was favored to win from the beginning of the competition.

Okay if I heard that answer and the judges heard that it would have been no competition, the translator did not say that at all. I agree with The Duchess, I know pageants want to be “politically correct” but you can only be pc so much until it becomes unfair and sometimes people can use political correctness as an excuse for laziness.

If we tell these girls to work on their bodies and try to live healthier lifestyles and call that empowering, then I do not understand why forcing the girls who do not speak English to learn another langauge is not. After the pageant is done the girls can go back to all their same bad eating habits they had before and they never have to workout again if they do not want to. But learning another language is something they can use for the rest of their lives and can broaden their horizons on whatever they choose to do afterwards. It will not only make the pageant more cost efficient but will save their chances and help the girls.

I agree with the contention that if a contestant chooses to use a translator, she is taking somewhat of a risk.

I just have to say though that when something gets lost in the translation at Miss Earth, people are so quick to bash Carousel for hiring bad translators. You never hear the end of it. But when it happens at Miss Universe, I don’t see fans going after the org. Double standards much? :%))

Re: Is English Language Important to win International Pagea

KNOWING ENGLISH and LEARNING ENGLISH are two different things.

You can't require a candidate TO KNOW AND SPEAK ENGLISH even during the competition because it shouldn't be a barrier for her not to win.

On the other hand, once you win and become Miss Universe, then you are required TO LEARN ENGLISH because you are now representing a worldwide organization/brand. As their official spokesperson, you should learn to speak the international language to be an effective ambassadress.

Take GABRIELA ISLER for instance. She was not very fluent and can understand very little English when she competed at the Miss Universe 2013. Heck! She even did not understand that she already won based on her reaction when Venezuela was called because her English comprehension is limited. Yet after winning, she was able to speak and understand English more fluently because she's now acting as the organization's representative. When she was invited to become one of the judges at Binibining Pilipinas 2014, she was actually able to speak good English. Why? Because she was already provided a Speech Master / English tutor to train her in terms of her communication skills..

The same thing happened with Paulina Vega.

So as a candidate, it shouldn't be a requirement. But on the other hand, as a Miss Universe winner, she should be trained to speak English to become an effective spokesperson.
