Miss Universe Country Rankings and Historical Significances

Postby JaninaCruz-Vega » Tue Apr 03, 2018 6:01 pm

The following is similar to an Olympic medal table, that includes every country and territory that has placed in the Miss Universe pageant, based on all results from the first edition in 1952 to the most recent competition in 2017. Note that, from 1990 to 2000 and 2015-present, there was only a Top 3 with the third and fourth runners-up positions eliminated.

Image

Albania, Bolivia, Guatemala, Hungary, Nicaragua, Turkey & Croatia are all tied at 61 with all of them having 3 semi finalists.

Estonia, Singapore, Great Britain & Ghana are all tied at 62 with 2 semifinalists respectively.

Cyprus, Ethiopia, Honduras, Kenya, Latvia, Malaysia, NIgeria, Portugal, Slovak Rep., Slovenia, Suriname, Tanzania, Turks & Caicos, US Virgin Islands, Vietnam and Zimbabwe are all tied at 63 and reaching the Miss Universe semi finals atleast once.

Antigua and Barbuda, Azerbaijan, Bahamas, Barbados, Benin (formerly Dahomey), Bonaire, Bophuthatswana, British Virgin Islands, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Cayman Islands, CIS, Cook Islands, Côte d'Ivoire, Dominica, Egypt, Fiji, French Guiana, Gabon, Gambia, Georgia, Gibraltar, Greenland, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Iraq, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Laos, Lesotho, Liberia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Madagascar, Malta, Martinique, Mauritius, Myanmar (formerly Burma), Micronesia, Montenegro, New Caledonia, Nepal, New Hebrides, Northern Marianas, Okinawa, Papua New Guinea, Réunion, Rhodesia & Nyasaland, Romania, Samoa, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, Saint Martin, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Senegal, Serbia, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Sint Maarten, Swaziland, Transkei, Tunisia, West Indies and Zambia have all entered the Miss Universe pageant at least once, but never placed.

**In 2002 Russia wins Miss Universe for the first time but later dethroned by the first runner up Panama.
This makes it the first time in the pageant's history that the 1st runner-up actually assumed the title when the reigning Miss Universe became incapable of fulfilling her duties, as explained in the disclaimer traditionally read out by hosts before announcing the winner in the live show.

Philippines 8th consecutive year.
USA 7th consecutive year.
Brazil 7th consecutive year.
Colombia 4th consecutive year.
Thailand 3rd consecutive year.
Canada 2nd consecutive year.
South Africa last placed 2015.
Venezuela last placed 2015.
Jamaica last placed 2014.
Spain last placed 2014.
China last placed 2013.
Great Britain last placed 2013.
Croatia last placed 2012.
Ireland last placed 2010.
Ghana last placed 1999.
Sri Lanka last placed 1955.

Notes:

With Miss Universe under WME/IMG they have crowned 3 countries with long history of title droughts.
Last 2016, France ended the longest title drought in Miss Universe, with their last being in 1953, that was 63 years.
The win also marks France first podium finish(tho they made their first top 5 last 2015 with Flora Coquerel but only a top 3 was given that year) since winning in 1953.

This year, South Africa ended their 39 year drought with the last being in 1978.

Last 2015, Philippines' ended their 42 year title drought with the last being in 1973. This also marks the return of the country in the top 5 after placing top 10 the previous year their first time since winning a couple of runners up positions from 2010-2013. This is also the longest top 15 streak for the country and the longest active streak in Miss Universe.

This is Colombia's 4th consecutive top 5 placement in Miss Universe after winning the crown last 2014 and being the last to be crowned under the trump era, Colombia since then, has been solid with a couple of 1st runners up in 2015 & 2017 and a 2nd runner up last 2016. This is also the longest active top 5 streak in Miss Universe.

But still USA is the winning-est country in Miss Universe with 8 crowns, their 7th straight placement last 2017 gives them their 61st placement out of 65 years of Miss Universe.
Venezuela's placement last year was their 8th time in 10 years. Additional, Keysi Sayago's top 5 finish last year is the highest placement for the country since winning in 2013.

This is Brazil's 3rd longest streak, the country also placed 7 straight semi finals during 1954-1960 & 1967-1974.

This is Thailand's 3rd consecutive semi finals spot. This also marks their longest streak in the pageant. Maria Poonlertlarp's top 5 finish last year is their highest placement since winning the Miss Universe crown in 1988.

This is Jamaica's highest placement following Yendi Phillips' 1st runner up win in 2010.

Great Britain's top 16 finish last year only marks the 2nd time that the country placed at Miss Universe with the first being in 2013.

Like Great Britain, this is only the second time for Ghana to reach the semi finals, with the first being in 1999.

Sri Lanka ended the 62 year semi finals drought, with their last being in 1955. This is the longest in Miss Universe history.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With this are we expecting another drought to end this year?
Can Brazil finally win their 3rd Miss Universe crown since 1968?
Or Italy finally wins their first ever Miss Universe?
Can Malaysia finally have their 2nd semifinalist in 48 years?
Or Argentina finally bags their 2nd Miss Universe since 1962?
Can Peru follow the footsteps of Colombia & France and win their 2nd crown since 1957?
Or can Kazakhstan, British Virgin Islands and Cayman Islands finally penetrates the top 16?
Or can we see Indonesia, Costa Rica & Czech Republic advancing in the top 10 this year?
or are we going to see the resurgence of powerhouses Sweden, Finland, Puerto Rico & Germany?
Or USA, Venezuela & Colombia are still going to dominate?

This will surely be an exciting Miss Universe edition again!

Thanks for reading! :-* >:D< <:-P

At least another Top 16 placement for The Philippines this year, extending the streak to 9th consecutive appearance in the semifinals. The last Asian country to do that was India, from 1992 - 2002, total of 11 consecutive streak. In this decade , 2010 - present, only the Philippines have the longest active streak in semifinal appearances, after Mariam Habach & Mareliza Gibson of Venezuela & Rima Fakih of USA failed to crack the semifinals in 2016 and 2010, respectively.

I expect countries like Vietnam, Cambodia, Peru to make an appearance in the semifinals. France may return to the semis as well this year, and Russia, too.

- Will Colombia make another placement in the Top 3 ?
- How will Venezuela fare in this year's edition, after the scandal in MVO and the economic crisis in their country ?
- And will we see another black girl in the Top 3 this year, after Davina Bennett of Jamaica?
- Will we see another almost all -Asian Top 5, which happened the last time in 1988? ( Thailand - Miss Universe 1988, South Korea - 1st RU, Japan - 3rd RU, Hong Kong - 4th RU )
- An Asian country won in 2015 ( Pia Wurtzbach of The Philippines), European country in 2016 ( Iris Mittanaere of France) & African country in 2017 ( Demi Leigh Peters of South Africa ). What's next? South America? ( Peru is a contender this year), North America? ( Canada or Mexico ) The Caribbeans? ( Dominican rep or Jamaica ). Or another Asian again? ( Vietnam, Thailand or The Philippines )
- I wanna see a semifinalist from a Middle Eastern country this year. ( like Lebanon, Israel, Iraq, Jordan, Turkey )

Agree! :=p

This is the best ranking because it doesn't have any bias, just plain old medal (in this case, placement) tally.

The biggest weakness of this medal table ranking is consistency. For example, Colombia and Brazil only has two winners but are much more consistent in placing and running up. Meanwhile, Namibia and Botswana are ranked high just for winning once and hardly ever placing again.

Misso/GB rankings avoid this problem, but introduce an even bigger one - assigning points on an absolutely arbitrary basis.

It was indeed a shocker that Puerto Rico missed 4 straight semi finals.

but if I'm not mistaken Puerto Rico's longest drought was 15 years? 1952-1969.
And then suddenly winning it's first title in 1970 on their first crack at the semis.

Actually Philippines is sitting at #9 before Pia's win. That win catapulted them to #4 over taking Sweden.
But if Sweden wins atleast a 1st runner up this 2018 and Philippines will settele for less than that, they will pull PHI down and pull themselves up to #4.

If WME/IMg is into ending droughts then I might say Brazil is really really close in winning plus that 7th straight years in the top 15/16 is something.

And if that happens, that's bad news for Philippines and Sweden, as Brazil will sky rocket at #4 overtaking them.

It was indeed a shocker that Puerto Rico missed 4 straight semi finals...

Not really. They’ve always been overrated and made the cut many times in the ‘90s through the new millennium only because of Orange Head. It’s Brazil that has surprisingly not as good a record as this colony...

Agree! :=p

I think that rankings include other pageants this is solely Miss Universe.

IT'S INDEED A SHAME CONSIDERING THAT ITALIAN WOMEN ARE SOME OF MOST GORGEOUS SPECIES IN THE WHOLE UNIVERSE. WITH THE LIKES OF SOPHIA LOREN, MONICA BELLUCCI ETC. TRAIN YOUR GIRLS ASAP TO THE PHILIPPINES AND YOU WILL GET YOUR 1ST MISS UNIVERSE CROWN SOON.... <:-P <:-P <:-P <:-P <:-P <:-P <:-P <:-P <:-P <:-P

I was actually shocked to learn that Italy still doesn't have a Miss Universe! All this time I thought they have atleast one.

Actually Philippines is sitting at #9 before Pia's win. That win catapulted them to #4 over taking Sweden.
But if Sweden wins atleast a 1st runner up this 2018 and Philippines will settele for less than that, they will pull PHI down and pull themselves up to #4.

this is true, that is why I wanted to see another filipina being crowned as Miss Universe this decade to set us apart for the other 2-win nations.

Sweden still haven't placed since 2009 and Top 5 finish since 1989.

How about the many placements of ENGLAND, SCOTLAND and WALES? Can't they be grouped together under GREAT BRITAIN/UK?
