Let's face it: Mariel has the potential to become a lovely international beauty queen who will bring pride to the Philippines but in order for her to become the best version of herself at Miss World, she needs to:
1. Lose a ton of weight. Her reign as Bb. Pilipinas-International is still yet to be finished but she already looks like she has just given birth to a large-for-gestational-age baby boy. Her post-partum look at the JAG Jeans Fashion Show was such a terrible let-down. Tsk! Tsk!
2. Have a very serious attitude adjustment. She needs to get off from her high horse and learn to be humble. I think she was raised as a spoiled brat which was why the parents couldn't stop her from posting those ill-remarks on Instagram. As an adult, she needs to realize that arrogance and bullheadedness will never be rewarded in the end. People will always find grace and humility to be very beautiful and highly commendable at all times.
3. Create an advocacy that is highly relevant and relatable to everyone especially the masses. It is also imperative that she knows how the risks can be managed and gaps identified easily. Most of all, her advocacy needs to be attainable within a certain timeframe for her to become effective in her BWAP project.
4. Change her wardrobe. She needs to stay away from so much black colour to create her illusion of thinness. No amount of dark-coloured wardrobe can ever conceal fatness forever. With the dark colours she wore during the MI preliminary activities coupled with her boring demeanour and sloth-like movements, she became sad and depressing to follow even on pictures.
5. Enjoy the competition. Mariel looked so painfully lost during her MI journey. One way to enjoy the whole experience is to be interested in people. Mingling isn't enough. She needs to learn how to be a good listener so she can captivate the interests of others. Rule of thumb: Just when we think we are fascinating is also when we are terrible at realizing that we bore others. Be brief, positive and upbeat. Ask people questions and find similarities in their experience because those similarities will bond you with them in the long run. Always have three good stories that reliably entertain, inform or engage and most of all, live an interesting life. Remember the theme of Don Quixote: "If you want to be a knight, act like a knight." So if Mariel wants to become an international beauty queen, then she needs to act like an international beauty queen.
Good luck, Mariel. We are not giving up on you. Please do not fail us this time.
