MICROBIOLOGY RESEARCH TOPIC

Postby newyork » Mon Feb 12, 2018 6:17 pm

Hi everyone. I need everyone's help to suggest a very interesting research topic in Microbiology which I will be doing for my thesis. I'm just a few months away (<2mos to be exact) in doing my formal research study and yet i don't have any feasible topics in mind. Please limit any possible testing scheme using the routine laboratory methods (No PCR or any other molecular testing methods coz they are too expensive). I would highly appreciate any topic suggestions for me to decide on. Then pls provide a little detail about the topic. Please be kind coz this is super needed for my Masters. Thanks y'all! :-*

Master's level ka pa naman but all of a sudden magtatanong tanong ka ng relevant topic about your thesis sa mga ordinaryong tao dito sa forum. You ask this question to your professors so that they may guide you better and gives you a higher credit. Oo nga naman, the beauty contestants in the Binibini and other leagues are almost highly educated. Some of them are scientists, doctors, nurses, pharmacist etc. However, ask this important questions in your lifetime to Karen Ibasco (Miss Earth 2017)- she's a medical physicist or to Janine Tugonon (1st runner up in Miss Universe)- she's a pharmacist or Ena Velasco (Binibining Pilipinas 2018 candidate)- she's a doctor by profession and etc. The lists can just go on and on but I'm pretty sure, if you ask them about this, they will tell you about alot of topics that might interests you in your studies.

Karen Ibasco should be conversant on this. Your in grad school don't you have an adviser who could suggest a relevant topic in your specific field of concentration.

Re: MICROBIOLOGY RESEARCH TOPIC

If you have access to scientific journals, the best starting point is to go to literature. Specifically, look for REVIEW ARTICLES because they will give you ideaS about recent trends, including what’s been done so far and prospective research direction. Even if you don’t have access to these journals, the abstracts (which are free) will give you ideas, too. Write down the titles and you can do two things. Either look for facebook groups for “paper sharing” where you can ask the group for access to the papers whose title you just wrote down or look for “sci-hub” on google. Sci hub is sort of similar in concept with pirate sites for movies, only, in this case, we are talking about papers.
As for your lack of access to instruments, that’s difficult. If your professors have collaborators that have good facilities, ask your professor/adviser to recommend you to them. Or if they don’t have collaborators, you have internet. Search for professors doing the same line of research you intend to do and email them yourself. Hope this helps.

Edit: here is the website for sci-hub: http://sci-hub.tw

Also, look for the group “paper request” on facebook

Easy .
So many things you can do ... And who knows you might discover something new .

Prevalence of Pseudomonas aerogenosa in hospital setting .
Get swab samples of sinks, bathrooms , floor , patient beds etc .
It was a shock that the doctor's quarter sink was full of pseudomonas .. Ha ha

Or you can check other bacterium as well like Staphylococcus , Streptococcus etc .

If you want to go further ... You can do sensitivity tests .
Epidemiological studies is always a blockbuster research .

You can even do community setting .
In your home or in public places .

You can do yeast and fungi too .

I hope you realize that microbiology has sub disciplines - food micro, industrial micro, agri micro, environmental micro, etc... you can not just ask the public for a topic without defining your specialization.

You are already taking your Masters. Exert effort in building a research topic. This level of education requires that you should be more critical and independent.

I love research .
The thing with it is that ...you can have a positive , negative or no outcome at all ... And it's still all good .
If you got no significant outcome.... Just say more research is needed and tell them your recommendations .
Tell them the strength and weakness of your research etc ... What were the problems you encountered ... Your limitations etc .

And you need not worry about repeating other people's work .
You may have a different outcome .
Or if you see flaws in their work ... Improve it .
Or if you get the same outcome .. It reinforces the previous research which is totally acceptable .
Of course if you're doing the same research .. You need to mention it and you can even make a direct comparison between theirs and yours .

The best part about research is battling it out with your consultants . Ha ha
You present your research and they will freak'n try to trash it .
If you're prepared and you know every detail of your work you need not worry of anything thrown to you really .

Research requires preparation , skill and depth .

First, do some readings of Abstract of studies related to your field of interest.
Second, write down a couple of topics and research questions.
Third, consult your adviser.
...................................
Use google scholar for tons of topics.
Visit online library,community library etc.
You will be spending a great deal of your time reading and doing lab work.
If things get too much, hire an assistant.

If I were you .. I'll do children's playground .
Anything that concerns children will surely attract their interest .
Whatever the children touches most frequent ...swab it and get a sample .
If there's a children's bathroom ... Get a sample
Some tunnels /nooks and crannies have poop and pee.. Yuck
But what's really I'm most concerned about is the sand ... they never clean it . Chances are there's dog poop there .
You can say ... This playground is used by children 5-12 years of age and you can go further and interview someone from the local Department of Health and ask what are the common infectious diseases of that age group . Of course you're trying to establish a correlation of infectious diseases say for example infectious diarrhea , infectious skin diseases , parasitemia , sepsis / bacteremia to unsanitary playgrounds .
I already have a title for your research " Unsanitary Children's Playgrounds as a Risk Factor for Children 5-12 years old in _______ (city where you live ) .

And you can do a dog park .
If you've been to one from afar it looks nice and clean but upclose there's lots of dried dog poop .
Most likely you'll get Escherichia coli isolates .... So the title of your research will be " Dog Parks as a Risk Factor for the Spread of Escherichia coli Diseases y ".
If you get Salmonella or Shigella isolates your research would even have a greater impact .

One word: Bioinformatics

No need to do experimental methodologies. =;)) =;))
But you might need to do a bit of programming. :D/

Since you are already in your Masters, try asking your PI rather than Misso. Hahaha! Masters thesis should be more advance but manageable in 1 year than your undergraduate thesis. If you have a degree in BS Biology, might as well propose an alternative method in microbe identification.

I am not really a biologist but a computational chemist. So if you are lazy to come up with a routine topic but needs a good thesis topic, you might as well start with computer simulations. Of what? It will depend on your experience and interests. My microbio professor in my university is quite good when it comes to new bioinformatics topics.

Re: MICROBIOLOGY RESEARCH TOPIC

Postby Virginia Dalisay » Tue Feb 13, 2018 9:11 am

Micro-organisms and their activities are vitally important to virtually all processes on Earth. Micro-organisms matter because they affect every aspect of our lives – they are in us, on us and around us.

Microbiology is the study of all living organisms that are too small to be visible with the naked eye. This includes bacteria, archaea, viruses, fungi, prions, protozoa and algae, collectively known as 'microbes'. These microbes play key roles in nutrient cycling, biodegradation/biodeterioration, climate change, food spoilage, the cause and control of disease, and biotechnology. Thanks to their versatility, microbes can be put to work in many ways: making life-saving drugs, the manufacture of biofuels, cleaning up pollution, and producing/processing food and drink.

Microbiologists study microbes, and some of the most important discoveries that have underpinned modern society have resulted from the research of famous microbiologists, such as Jenner and his vaccine against smallpox, Fleming and the discovery of penicillin, Marshall and the identification of the link between Helicobacter pylori infection and stomach ulcers, and zur Hausen, who identified the link between papilloma virus and cervical cancer.

Microbiology research has been, and continues to be, central to meeting many of the current global aspirations and challenges, such as maintaining food, water and energy security for a healthy population on a habitable earth. Microbiology research will also help to answer big questions such as 'how diverse is life on Earth?', and 'does life exist elsewhere in the Universe'?

If you have an interest in food service and the related topics, I suggest that you access internet materials about "Serv-Safe". The study of "danger zones" and HACCP offers some of the most informative treatises with useful guidelines in food safety and hygiene enabling restaurant practices and kitchen policies in the industry. Been there and have been doing that without fail as a culinary professional and and formally trained cocinero through these years.

It's really about how you did your research that counts ... How well you prepared , your skill and the depth of your research.
Like I said it can have a positive outcome , negative outcome or no outcome at all and it's still ok .

For the children's playground a positive outcome will be ... Yes there's a direct correlation of high prevalence of infectious diseases among children 5-12 years old with the use of unsanitary children's playgrounds as proven by this and that .
Homeless people were using the playgrounds as bathrooms come night time etc . My control group ( a McDonald's children's playground ) yielded a negative result .

Negative outcome would be .....the high incidence of infectious diseases were not attributed to public playgrounds but to a local day care center blah blah blah as reported by the local Department of Health . Furthermore my control group ( a McDonald's Playground ) yielded positive results too.

No outcome would be ... My findings are inconclusive . My isolates were normal flora blah blah blah .

For the dog park .
A positive outcome ... The dog park is heavily contaminated with Escherichia coli and the Department of Health is aware of the situation .

A negative outcome ...no Escherichia coli was found out . Zilch . Zero . Nada
My control group ( a different park ) yielded no E.coli too.

No outcome ... My findings are inconclusive blah blah blah . My control group ( a different park ) yielded the same inconclusive results .

Bakla, nakakarelate ako sa situation mo. What if you revive again the "comparative test of the antibacterial activities of herbal extracts from indigenous herbs makabuhay, makahiya or guava." Or if you want use other plants beside those i mentioned. You may innovate this comparative research about antibacterial test. Plus it is very simple. You can just use simple agar extract as your culture media, swab sticks, petri dishes, forceps, impregnation disks, spectrophotometer, simple column chromatography technique. Bacterial spectrum you can use may include E. Coli, staphylococcus aureus, or pseudomonas auroginosa. Of course, do not forget to always practice aseptic technique.

I have this feeling that this is a Sociology/Anthropology (or any social sciences) thesis you're doing. The skeptics in me tells me that for a Microbiology Masters student, looking for a research topic in a Beauty Pageant forum is rather questionable and out of sync. Either that or you're enrolled in a third rate university that doesn't give a damn on the quality of master's thesis you'll be doing. In any case, goodluck! May your search add value to the world!

I did a research on antimicrobial properties of psidium guajava against intestinal salmonella typhimurium injected on balb/c mice. Fairly cheap but needed a lot of work for 1 person, in preparing agar, plating and culturing. Im sure you can figure something out.

Interesting! Done during your undergrad pre-med course or during those years of studies in proper Med. Can't be while you're on Residency status or during post-grad Fellowship, right Doc?

Hi to all the commenters i did appreciate all what you suggested as well as the negative critics. Don't worry guys i'm very open-minded about all that were mentioned whether they were good or bad hahaha! I'm very glad to learn that there are a lot of forumers here who are affiliated to the medical field and I wouldn't be surprised if some of the commenters are actual Masters/Doctorate Degree holders. I hope to follow all your steps.

Honestly, doing this Masters is super stressful while on a full-time job. I've just finished my academic subjects and now doing my practicum. Then in less than 2 months I'll be starting my thesis proper, that is when I'll be choosing my own adviser. As a scientist, I'd like to be more open-minded about suggestions or opinions coz at the end of the day, it's still me who will be deciding on the topic/s i'll be pursuing and moreover doing all things independently. My concentration is more on clinical microbiology and laboratory science, i do have some topics going on my mind which unfortunately i cannot reveal for now. Promise i will let you all know once I successfully finish this degree.

Thank you to everyone who took time to share their knowledge and opinions. You're all so sweet! Wish me the best.. :-*
