A beautiful and telling narrative!
When the poor of the world come into our homes for work, they are not slaves. They are free humans beings who have feelings and fears and fantasies and fun. Their emotions are not any different from those of the master or mistress or the household.
When the poor of the world come into our homes for work, they may be treated with some degree of separateness to avoid over familiarity, yet must be given the respect that the human should provide to another in any situation. People need to eat, to rest, to enjoy life, to discuss their problems and personal frustrations, to have those problems and frustrations seen by those who can have an impact on them.
When the master of a household permits his housemaids or so-called domestics to become the object of emotional or physical abuse, then he is responsible for sins against his fellowmen. He is also permitting a situation to develop that encourages rancor and humiliation, to build up hate. The helpers that come into our homes are decent people for the most part who have families to feed and children and husbands, sisters and brothers, mothers and fathers.
Being transported to a foreign country to work because your own can not provide job security for your family is bad enough. Being treated as an almost inanimate object by your employer is worse. Being badgered day in and day out and overworked by insensitive people whose selfishness permits them to use and abuse but not to be compassionate is a condition none of us want, but too many of us subject to.
I bleed for the poor and weep for all the Lolas of this world.
