Performance wise, Mariam proved us that never, ever discount the presence of Venezuela in the world of pageantry. They have mastered this craft and even though how many times they've been snubbed in the past and never to advance in the next level, still they never failed to deliver and slay their competition. The Asian girls are stepping up their A-games and I won't be shocked if Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand will advance in the semis and eventually win because they are so competitive. Maxine never did disappoint me since she performed very well during the preliminary. Credible choices for your top 12 and good job! I really hope that this wonderful thread will finally inspire me to create one, lols! Kudos!

Because he forced us to be back! Hahahahah Just kidding.

Well, Venezuela might not have the prettiest face but remember, Miss Universe is looking for "confidently beautiful" and not for the most beautiful.

Maybe someone at least ranked #45 in beauty and not #85? =;)) =;)) =;))

Excellent UNO! A very realistic list and your commentaries are on point. I didn't know Sierra Leone was trained in the Philippines, smart girl! Although I was not into her during prelims, she looks short and unbalanced. About Venezuela as the winner, because I've been getting a fake vibe from her, I've started to believe that those rumors about how she treats other people are true and I am not loving it. So I wouldn't want a Miss Universe like that, and specially not after Pia who in my opinion is such a humble and gracious human being. However, Mariam is indeed a top performer and one of the best Miss Venezuela in recent years. Let's see what the future holds for her...

I still feel that some rumors against Venezuela are magnified. Well, I believe real beauty queens do have their bitchy side. I mean tgey cime to compete and not to be Miss Congeniality. I believe she is just being true and not fake. Which for me, its okay. I think the monks and the nuns are the one holy, and beauty queens are just human. Hahaha

It is indeed nice to see both of us having Venezuela on top. I cant be biased at all. On stage, she's impeccable. I dont care rumors about her being a bitch. I mean Paulina and Zuleyka were tagged as one too! Hahaha

About Iris, in my heart, she is my winner and I hope she'll win, but for now it's Venezuela and I am keeping my jinx fairy locked!

Regarding your top choice: Venezuela. She's a logical choice considering the criteria we used to know about Miss Universe. But I can't convince myself seeing her as the winner hehe :)>-

Hi my dear. Nice seeing you too :) Thank you for your time reading my very long thread. Hahaha

I understand you why you cant see Mariam as a winner. I myself was shocked too as my mind was fixed with Nicaragua post arrival. But I have grown to love her. And during the prelims, she won me with her impressive performance. There's magic while watching her. It is as if I was hypnotized hahaha

I missed you dear. Nice catching up.

As Ive said on my thread, the prelims might help us spectators on who's who should place, but I still believe though we both demoted Colombia for example, still she might place higer and might shine her brightest. Leila Lopes in 2011 dont have the energy at all. She simply rely on her beauty and yet during the finals, she was killing it. What's your take with DR and France?

Yeah actually I don't doubt for a second the potential Colombia (or anyone for that matter) has come finals night. It's such a game changer. We can only see snippets of the girls in the preliminaries, and we do not have access to their interviews anyway, so we can really only judge based on what resources we have.

I have Sal at 7-9 and France at 4-6 (my threes are interchangeable, apart from my top 3).

I wonder how will you react if Mariam / VENEZUELA.....CLAPS. There's news circulating (and some video clips to prove) showing Mariam's not-so-good attitude. And also COLOMBIA.

However, Mariam is IN in my list.

And who knows, they might bring the Miss USA 2016 result tomorrow.

If choosing Miss Universe is solely based with character, then I hope MUO should be very wise because out of 86 girls for sure about 75 are just pretending to be nice. If and if they will exclude Mariam, it is only because they are threatened Miriam will excel and shine the brightest. Just like what I said above, majority of beauty queens are bitches. They are there to compete and not to bring home Miss Friendship! I still feel, Mariam's bashers are threatened and they have to magnify such issue about her character! Well, nuns and minks are holy! They should choose from those people then! Hypocrisy is ruling at the world if pageantry! If they really wanna riwn Miss GNRC, they should ask the girl to all prepare in the finals without make up then! Hahaha

About Colombia, the rumor that she's pregnant and asked MUO to not disqualify her but simply remove her if ever she'll be in the top 13 had been circulating. Well, I still feel MUO still owe Colombia a free pass to compensate the humility they caused when Ariadna was called wrongfully as the winner.

Miss Universe - I say it before, and I will say it once again, that this is the Oscar's of all pageants, the "creme de la creme", and to many - the most prestigious pageant Olympics where women across the globe are vying for this elussive title. Mind you, a lot were called, but only few were chosen. To this date, USA still holds the most number of winners with eight (8), closely followed by Venezuela with seven (7), and Puerto Rico with five (5). Interestingly, Miss Universe' rival Miss World, a British owned pageant, has crowned three Americans (one dethroned), while Miss Universe, a US owned pageant, hasn't crowned any Brits since its conception. Well, Miss Universe is now on it's 65th year, and since last edition, the MUO is now under WME/IMG. We have witnessed different changes from the previous years. Pageants indeed are evolving, from then a laid-back approach, we are all now being stunned by women who are almost Victoria Secret models walking as if they are at the Paris Fashion Week. They are now fiercer, more confident, and no longer timid. We all even saw how Pia changed the course of game at Miss Universe through the expressions in her eyes, and the way she carries herself.

Indeed, the new Miss Universe must be Confidently Beautiful in it’s truest essence.

Image

Last year, Miss Universe has a new approach, and I liked it. Audience can now see and learn deeper about the candidates through their own personal stories. They were highlighting their own struggles, cultural challenges, and on how they managed to overcome those adversities and be triumphant in the end. It made Miss Universe more appealing, humanized, relatable, and interesting. And I am very much excited to see and learn more about this year's candidates. But, do you agree in some rumors that "some" of the last year's semifinalists were all pre-determined, and were chosen regardless if they did well or not in the prelims, because of their stories and Miss Universe & WME/IMG wanted to highlight universal issues such as a Muslim woman wearing swimsuit, a biracial representative who were bullied because she looks different, and a candidate who then was in the same stadium where the terrorism attack in a famous European city happened?

Though yes, every year, Miss Universe would give us some WTF moments. How many times we utter the words, "Where does she came from?" I mean in 2008, Claudia Ferraris (Italy) came from nowhere; the unbelievable Fan Vote recipient Laura Goncalves (Portugal) in 2011; the "almost-Dancing with the Stars" Shilpa Singh (India) in 2012; and the short-haired Dominique Rinderknecht (Switzerland) in 2013 to name a few. Those days, we were thinking, "Ah, maybe they are part of the "Trump Picks". We also have witnessed the exclusion of real worthy candidates like Marlisa Gibson (Venezuela) and Rima Fakih (USA) in 2010, Deborah Henry (Malaysia) in 2011, Bodine Koehler (Puerto Rico) in 2012, and Paulina Krupinska (Poland) in 2013.

So what can we expect this year? Well, the Preliminary Competition has put the nail to the coffin. It sealed the deal. But of course, let me say that us Pageant Experts, we are not predictionists, nor has that psychic ability to see what is about to happen. Even the most deserving girl might ended up tripping nor might struggle in the question and answer. Our basis are mainly about the performances these delegates have shown us. Still, the girls themselves has the power to make or break their chances, and it is beyond any pageant experts control. In addition, it is not as well guaranteed that all those best performers at the prelims will place. Miss Universe are considering other factors. It includes their overall persona since their arrival in the competition, the way they mingle to people and other candidates, and of course Miss Universe is looking for this "superstar appeal" who is both special and can best represent their brand.

Image

At the prelims last night, us spectators were given a glimpse of who's is deserving to place. The girls paraded in their swimsuits, and we were all in awe as these girls really know how to set the stage on fire. Well, the Preliminary Gown competition was a deja vu of Sean Kelly's Project Runway finale fashion show who won the 13th season of that said show, as fringe dresses were the common theme of the night. Heidi Klum even wore it at the Emmys a couple years back. But, truthfully, majority of the girls were nothing but exquisite and brought their A games. Well, Pia as Miss Universe is a tough act to follow.

Image

So who's who on my Final Hotpicks? Mind you, it's difficult. There are lot's of girls who were stunning, and really performed with their utmost best. But, we all need to trim them down, weigh their overall performances, and of course assess their chances. In this edition of Miss Universe final hotpicks, from time to time, I will be incorporating facts and tidbits about these girls and the country they are representing.

So folks, I wont let you wait some more.
UNOLOGY is proud to bring you the brightest stars in my universe, and we begin with....

ALBANIA : Ranked 20th

Originally, I had Great Britain and Spain on my list, but Albania did a terrific job during the preliminary competition. As the opening salvo, it is indeed tough but she gave a beautiful performance. Mind you, I was blown away with her evening gown. In my opinion, her subtle approach in this year's Miss Universe edition is very much felt and might give her a shot in the top 12. Well, BRAVO!

Image

Albania, has yet to produced a Miss Universe winner. From time to time since their debut at Miss Universe some few years back, we saw these beautiful girls placing. Unfortunately, they haven't penetrated the top 5.

CHINA : Ranked 19th

With a very solid preliminary performance, China is reminding us that she is not threatened at all to be standing next to Andrea Tovar. She was fierce in her swimsuit, and exudes an almost porcelain doll aura in her exquisite evening gown. Well, she is unleashing the hidden dragon in her. KUDOS!

Image

China made a comeback in 2002 wherein they placed as 2nd runner up. In 2011, they again managed to penetrate the top 5 and placed as 4th runner up. To date, China might have two Miss World crowns (2007, 2012) but has yet to win a Miss Universe title.

SIERRA LEONE : Ranked 18th

Debuting this year at Miss Universe is the well loved, Hawa Kamara. Well, Miss Universe is known to give their new babies a fresh start. In 1999, Botswana debuted at Miss Universe and she won (Mpule Kwalogobe) on their first attempt. In 2002, China made a big comeback and placed as 2nd runner up. Is Miss Universe gonna give Hawa a free pass? Well, Hawa is indeed a beautiful addition at this years batch. She reminds us of Miss Tanzania 2007 (Flaviana Matata), who placed in the top 10.

Image

During the preliminary competition, Hawa's training in the Philippines all paid off. She was very comfortable with her skin, and gave a commendable performance in both rounds. If Hawa will be given the opportunity to place at the top 12, it will be a joy to watch.

BARBADOS : Ranked 17th

Her exotic appeal, beautiful complexion, confidence, plus the fact that her country is making a big comeback are enough to seal the deal. Most experts saw a big potential in her, and it's inevitable to ignore such island beauty. And if ever she will place, I will be the happiest.

Image

Barbados debuted at Miss Universe in 1976 up until 1979. After some years of being absent, they came back in 1984 to 1987, 1999, 2003 to 2007, and again this year 2016. Is this their lucky comeback?

NETHERLANDS : Ranked 16th

Zoey Ivory has been my favorite since the start, as facially, she is one of the best from Europe. My only problem is her styling. But, come on guys, she is tall, has that striking goddess-like face, and her only downfall is her packaging. That gown she wore made me feel sad. If ever she will make it at the top 9, please change that hideous gown and the styling of her hair. She is indeed like a diamond in the rough!

Image

Netherlands only Miss Universe (then Miss Holland, Angela Visser) was declared as the most beautiful Miss Universe winner during a survey in the year 2000. In 1991, they almost bagged their second win when Paulien Huizinga placed as 1st runner up. To date, their closest bid for the crown was in 2014, when Yasmin Verheijen was declared 3rd runner up. In 1965, Anna Schuit, however, gave their country their first top 5 finish (4th runner up).

ARUBA : Ranked 15th

Image

Well, most of my Misso friends Qarlo, Nhoie Gee, Kring, Marck Prince, Tala and myself were left speechless. Undeniably, she came at the preliminary competition with her guns fully loaded. Just like Albainia and China, Aruba ousted my other favorites as she was not even on my original list. Well, we give credits to where credit is due right?

Image

Aruba only placed at Miss Universe twice in their entire participation since 1964, but both girls placed in the top 5. In 1974, the Filipinos fell in love and was rooting for Miss Aruba Maureen Ava Vieira, and luckily placed as 4th runner up at Miss Universe. Interestingly, some babies at that time were given named "Aruba" in the Philippines , because of her. I should know, even one of our neighbor's daughters was given that name too. In 1996, this was Aruba's closest bid for the crown as Taryn Scheryl Mansell went head to head against Alicia Machado, and placed as first runner up.

PUERTO RICO : Ranked 14th

Image

Brenda might be just a substitute, but her replacing the real winner (Kristhialee Santiago) gave her the motivation to prove that she is the rightful Puerto Rican torchbearer for this year's edition of Miss Universe. I actually like this vibrant vibe of Brenda that is both refreshing and youthful. If I want to have a girl friend, I'll probably court this lass. Maybe, this year's theme from Puerto Rico is packaging their ladies in a new way. Look at the newly crowned Miss World Stephanie Del Valle,--- I think both Steph and Brenda exude exuberance, and rawness. I guess, it is no longer about sending a manufactured looking cliche' pageant beauty queen, but instead, they are taking their chances with their new approach. Let's see if it will also work at Miss Universe this year. And mind you, if ever Brenda will place, it will be very unfair to blame Dayanara Torres because truthfully, Brenda has all the goods, and she is indeed very deserving for a spot in the top 12.

Image

Puerto Rico had been very successful at Miss Universe in the previous decades with five wins. At one point, they even ousted Venezuela with four until Osmel and her girls made a comeback in 2008, 2009 and 2013 wherein these Venezuelan goddesses claimed the second spot with the most Miss Universe crowns (seven). It's been 10 years since Zuleyka Rivera's win, and even though Puerto Rico had been placing from time to time in the top 5, in recent years, it's becoming an uphill battle. Well, is Puerto Rico back again in the game? In 1994, when the Philippines hosted the Miss Universe, Puerto Rico failed to place. Are we gonna see a repeat of 1994, or are we going to see a better repeat from 1974 wherein Puerto placed as a semi-finalist? Well, it's up to Brenda.

Miss Universe 2016/2017 SEMI FINALISTS for UNOLOGY are:

ARGENTINA : Ranked 13th

Image

Do you know how it hurt me putting Estefania Bernal almost out from my top 12? It sucks a lot, but in a competitive batch like what we have right now, there's no room for mistakes. Plus, in the top 12, the Fan Vote is into play. So technically, it will be 13. People, especially pageant enthusiasts, would not really put Argentina as a frontrunner prior to their arrival. But when Estefania came to Manila, you can't really ignore her natural charm and beautiful face. In every single photos she's in, if you don't know her, you would say, "Who is she?" To me, she is the Face of Miss Universe. If only she is wearing a different sash, let's say VENEZUELA or COLOMBIA, for sure, she will be in the number 1 spot of every post-arrival predictions. Argentina has produced one Miss World (1960, Norma Cappagli), one Miss Universe (1962, Norma Nolan), and one Miss International (1967, Mirta Teresita Massa). So we can say that the 60's had been their golden era when it comes to beauty pageants. Aside from having two runners up at Miss Universe (2nd runner up in 1962, 4th runner up in 1970), their closest bid to the crown was only in 2014 as Valentina Ferrer managed to place 9th overall.

Image

Originally, Estefania was included in my top 9, but Dominican Republic stole the spot from her with Sal’s impressive performace. In my mind, am I gonna simply rely on beauty? I want to see that hunger in her, and who knows, she might have it. But, I hope it wont be too late for her. The clock is ticking, and if I am a judge, I am looking for the best ambassador for Miss Universe, and I wont solely depend on what Mama and Papa gave me. There are a lot of beautiful girls, but is Estafania’s beauty enough to save her with that outdated evening gown she wore at the prelims? Sad, but rumors has it that her gown was stolen at the venue upon their arrival for the prelims. What she wore was just a replacement. For now, it's been a tough call, and I am putting her as my dark horse.

USA : Ranked 12th

Image

Deshauna indeed is the torch bearer for the women of color in this year’s Miss Universe edition. She has indeed a strong case to share that is truly inspiring and empowering. As a military women serving her country, she gave the world a thought that women can be both strong and beautiful. She is even black, yet, she has shown courage and determination that if we can only put our minds to our goals, we can actually reach them. And with this beautiful story of hers, that alone is a genuine ticket for her to be given a spot in the finals.

Image

Upon watching her in the preliminaries, you can’t really ignore the way she sways her hips and that graceful command onstage. She nailed both the evening gown and the swimsuit, and to me, my Miss Universe list will never be crucified as #MissUniverseAllSoWhite, because indeed, a wonderful and deserving woman of color is up for the running as the next Miss Universe. With eight crowns under USA’s belt, if Deshauna will bring home their ninth win, oh boy oh boy, this is one great news America is waiting after Trump’s win as President of the United States. And believe me, this is possible because given the chance for Deshauna to penetrate the top 6, she will eat everyone alive! Deshauna might be a bit far from my list, but that doesn’t mean I am not banking on her on the top 3. She might be the greatest reveleation of the night. The best of luck D!

INDONESIA : Ranked 11th

Image

When Megan Young was crowned in Bali, Indonesia, as the very first Miss World from the Philippines, I can't help but entertain the thought, "What if the Philippines will return the favor and crown the very first Miss Universe from Indonesia via this stunning and charming lass named Kezia Warouw?" Well, it is not far from happening because it's evident that Indonesia is being represented by a wonderful candidate who exudes youthfulness, energy and drive to win. In addition, on the business side for MUO, Indonesia is indeed a good market. They even hosted Miss World, and will host that said pageant again soon, so why not profit on that opportunity and crown this girl. Well, I am not saying that Indonesia should win just because of that, because Keke is indeed deserving. I believe, there's a right timing for everything, and it the stars are aligning for Miss Indonesia, then who are we to judge.

Image

Since her visit in December, a lot of people were wowed by her mere presence. Then she came back this month with all her guns and bullets. She has proven that aside from Thailand and the Philippines, Indonesia is here to slay. Though some Asian fans are having lots of heated arguments especially the Filipinos vs Indonesians vs Thais, all I can say is that there's no supremacy in the world of pageantry, because one day you can be a hot item, and on the next day you will just be nothing. Well, we saw the glorious years of India in power, and was followed by Japan. Maybe Philippines has reached its peak too or probably will go on a downward spiral, and Thailand and Indonesia will step in. Who knows?

I love the fact that Keke exudes that vibrant charm during the preliminaries. And if her bashers are celebrating about her trip at the evening gown competition, well, let me remind you that in 2013, Gabriella Isler can’t even walk with her fully-sequined gown yet she ended up winning Miss Universe. So, I am not counting out Keke on my list. She deserves to place. Indonesia is on for a good ride in the finals for sure!

AUSTRALIA : Ranked 10th

Image

Okay, if there’s a disappointment in the preliminary show, I might say, I am a bit underwhelmed by Australia’s performance. Undeniably, she is one of the smartest and prettiest. She has this punch that I love, and I know she deserves a placement. I am a bit disappointed with her performance with that almost “Gabriela Markus-ish” (Miss Brazil Universe 2012) gown. Is she losing that burning fire in her? If she will continue on with this path, I am not sure if she will go further in the competition.

Image

Having said those a bit not so nice words above, I can say that I still believe in her. Caris is representing one of the most successful countries in Miss Universe. In recent years, we all saw these Aussies placing even up to the top 5. In my opinion, she is of the same league with the previous Miss Australia representatives. They are almost the same prototypes for Christ sake, so how can they be wrong? Their last win was in 2004 via Australia’s Next Top Model host Jennifer Hawkins, and who knows, Australia’s might bring home their 3rd crown this year. Well, we can never underestimate “the thunder from down under” right?

MEXICO : Ranked 9th

Image

Well, after placing in the top 8 at Miss Earth 2013, Kristal Silva came back in the Philippines for another quest. And this time, she is a clear favorite. In my eyes, at times, I am seeing this Gabriella Isler vibe in her. Her body is ooozing with sex appeal, and her aura is undeniably mesmerizing. She might be correct when the host quoted her during the preliminary competition that in 2013, she might still be lacking confidence. But at the prelims, she is as if a celebrity attending the Oscars. Yet again, she stunned us all with her mere presence, wowing us in her swimsuit, and reminding us that her National Director, Lupita Jones (Miss Universe 1991), sent her NOT for nothing. Maybe this time, she indeed came back to the Philippines for the crown. Well, why aspire for the Earth if she is destined to have the Universe right?

Image

Mexico to date only holds four (4) international crowns, two from Miss Universe (1991, 2010), and two from Miss International (2007, 2009). Mexico hasn't produced a Miss World nor a Miss Earth title yet, and I asked myself, what's wrong? Mexicans are known to be one of the most beautiful women in the world. Even up to now, Laura Elizondo (Miss Universe 2005 3rd runner up) was one of my favorite. And who would ever forget the likes of Perla Beltran(1st runner up at Miss World 2009) and Mariana Berumen (Top 15 at Miss World 2012) who were all wasted. Are they being sent at the wrong pageant? Or it's about time to recycle their representatives just like in 2007 and 2009 wherein they produced their Miss International crowns via Miss Universe Top 10 semifinalist - Priscila Perales, and Miss World Top 15 semifinalist - Anagabriella Espinoza who replaced the controversial Laura Zuniga.

Image

This year, if Kristal will pull a win, then Nuestra Belleza Mexico should reevaluate their formula. Growing up watching Thalia, other Mexican soap operas, I must say that I am a huge fan of these Mexican women. So to Kristal, may ladyluck be on your side!

FRANCE : Ranked 8th

Image

As the second European country to ever have won Miss Universe in 1953 (Christiane Martel), and the first country in the world to have won both the Miss Universe and Miss World (Denise Perrier) at the same year (1953), France's journey at Miss Universe had been not so nice. At the field of pageantry, their last big win was in 1976, when France won Miss International (Sophie Perin). For decades, though France would place in the top 10 from time to time at Miss Universe, the closest they've got was actually during the last edition, as Flora Coquerel placed as 3rd runner up. This year, France is being represented by the gorgeous Dentistry student - Iris Mittenaere. From time to time, we would speak and truthfully, I adore this lass. Undeniable she is beautiful, and sexy. She has a great sense of style which is very French. She is not timid, in fact she is very welcoming and spontaneous.

Image

In one of our conversations, she told me in secrecy that the designer of the green gown to which I like so much that she wore before, is providing her with another exquisite gown. And yes, I can say that Iris wore one of the most beautiful and expenssive looking gown of the night. She reminded me of a modern version of Belle from Beauty and the Beast. Well, Iris deserves nothing but the best, and I am happy to see her blossoming throughout the competition. Come finals night, expect her to sport a different look.

Image

France is still in the game, and as subtle as her approach, I believe that Iris will be able to shine her brightest on the morning of January 30. Bonne chance et bonne courage ma belle. Vous etes vraiment belle. Magnifique!

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC : Ranked 7th

Image

Sal Garcia's road to Miss Universe was not easy. She even managed to find ways on how she can be able to compete, because her country can't possibly support her bid, wardrobes, and her travel. But what a wonderful story to share, because if there's a will, Sal is indeed a believer that there's a way. Pawee and I would talk from time to time, and I mentioned him that I like Dominican Republic. He then told me, she is not in his list. But, Sal is my sentimental favorite, and I waited til the preliminary competition wherein she delivered one of the best performances of the night. I was blown away by evening gown, as she was nothing but regal and divine.

Image

The only thing that bothers me a bit about Sal is her nose. But, compensating it is the way she carries herself. She’s tall, her body is insanely to die for, and her hunger to represent her country and hopefully win is truly remarkable. That’s a characteristic of a brand ambassador Miss Universe should possess. And in some sort, I can see Pia in her --- the willingness to learn, her passion, and the fire burning inside her makes Sal an incredible woman. And with that I salute you on a job well done. PHENOMENAL. You indeed made the Dominican Republic proud! Hats off.

BRAZIL : Ranked 6th

Image

Let me start by enumerating some interesting facts about Brazil. Well, Brazil is the fourth country in South America to have won the Miss Universe crown (Peru 1957, Colombia 1958, Argentina 1962), and is the first South American country to have won Miss Universe twice (1963, 1968). And since then on, it's been a hit or a missed, or in some occasions - almost.Well, in fact, they have five first runners up placements under their belt (1954, 1957, 1958, 1972 and their most recent, 2007). Well, let's go back in the years 1963 and 1968. Interestingly, during that time, no Venezuelan (now with seven Miss Universe winners), no Puerto Rican (now with five Miss Universe winners), nor even Filipina (now with three Miss Universe winners) has won the title. In fact, their last Miss Universe winner to date, Martha Maria Vasconcellos was the one who crowned Philippines' very first Miss Universe, Gloria Diaz. Well, now that the Philippines has three, do you think that it is possible that a Filipina queen (Pia Wurtzbach) will return the favor and crown Brazil's third Miss Universe winner in the person of Raissa Santana? I got goosebumps already simply by imagining that scenario.

Image

Well, year after year, we have seen Brazil sending almost the same prototype at Miss Universe. At times, they even had a back to back to back top five placements, one in the 50's (1957 first runner up, 1958 first runner up, 1959 fourth runner up) and the other in 2011 (2nd runner up), 2012 (4th runner up) and 2013 (4th runner up). But this year, Brazil is sending their second representative of black origin after Deise Nunes in 1986, who placed in the top 10 of Miss Universe. Well, my good friend Pawee is even predicting her as the next Miss Universe and I must agree, she has indeed the potential of bringing back the elusive crown after 48 long years

Image

From the preliminary competition, Raissa indeed sealed her fate. Her consistency in the whole competition is not and will never be ignored. Her confidence is bursting like a hot lava, and did you see her in her evening gown? It is an absolute perfection! And without a doubt, she is a top 6 material. And hopefully, if its her destiny, I don’t mind seeing a woman of color winning Miss Universe again. Brazil took a chance by sending an out of the box representative, and yes indeed, it is a wise decision. Crown this girl!

NICARAGUA : Ranked 5th

The Philippines has hosted the Miss Universe twice in the past (1974,1994), and coincidentally have crowned first time winners (Amparo Munoz SPAIN, Sushmita Sen INDIA). Will it be a deja vu now that the Philippines is hosting the Miss Universe pageant again? In the history of Nicaragua since their participation at Miss Universe (though their longest absent was in 1980 to 1990), they only placed three times (top 12 in 1977, top 10 in 2007 and top 16 in 2013). Well, there's always a first time for everything right? And who knows, this 5'11 football player might be the one who will bring Nicaragua it's very first international title.

Image

Marina Jacoby is not a rookie in pageants, as when she was a teenager, she placed as fourth runner up at Miss Teenager Universe. In addition, she is a model, she is very eloquent, and her face alone reminds me of Miss International 2015 from Venezuela - Edymar Martinez. In some angles, I can see Natalie Glebova in her.

Image

But what are the odds playing against her? Is it her weak sash? Is WME/IMG on for countries to whom they can bank for future business opportunities? Or is it really about who is the fairest and most deserving of them all? Well, looking back, during the Trump era, despite of him being a known business tycoon, in 1999, Botswana (Mpule Kwalagobe) won on their first attempt. Is there any business in Botswana? Mind you, Miss Universe that time had crowned a black queen (Miss Trinidad and Tobago's Wendy Fitzwilliam) and making it as a black to black is indeed a first at Miss Universe. In 2011, another country with a weak sash, Angola (Leila Lopes), was also favored to win their first Miss Universe crown. Is it because of Angola's booming economy? I guess not because, Leila did was shining at the right place and time that year.

Image

Grading her from the preliminary competition, I am very much satisfied with her introduction and her look. Boy oh boy, what a beautiful human being. Gosh. Her strongest round was in her swimwear. Hands don, one of the best. About her evening gown, I am not really a fan. I already saw a version of it from Nia Sanchez (Miss Universe 2014 1st runner up from USA), and saw tons of it’s replica in different colors here at the many cheap dress shops at Barbes Rochechouart in Paris. I am not saying Marina wore a cheap looking gown. I am just pointing out, she could have worn a better dress. Honestly, both Argentina and Nicaragua made me sad upon seeing those cliché dresses. BUT, I will never remove Marina out on my list. She can even wear a “sac poubelle”, and will still looks ravishing though. She was even my initially winner, and if that will happen, I will be celebrating with the whole of Nicaragua!

Image

Well, for many pageant enthusiasts, seeing an underdog win, is like watching a Cinderalla movie. I remember in 1994, only Martin Nievera included India in the possible list of semi finalists. Most people were predicting Greece, Colombia, USA, Belgium or Venezuela. But in the end, Sushmita made history as the first Indian Miss Universe. So as for me, I am still not counting out Marina in the running of the Miss Universe title.

COLOMBIA : Ranked 4th

Image

Since Paulina's win in 2014, Colombia seems to have their momentum as last year, an almost back to back happened through Ariadna Gutierrez. This year, they sent yet again another strong representative in the person of Andrea Tovar. Truthfully, Andrea has the "Star Quality" a Miss Universe winner should possess. Well, in all of her appearances at the many activities at Miss Universe, she is one of the most sought after and the soonest she arrives, it feels like a celebrity is in the house. KUDOS!

Image

She best represent that "latin tribe" as she indeed exudes that vibrant sensual sex appeal without really losing her class and sophistication. I would watch her on her IG stories and live broadcast, and I am entertained. I keep telling my friends that she is a superstar, and if Colombia is up for revenge, then Andrea is a worthy bet. Though yeah, she gained a little weight. She’s not as vavaboom during her national competition but nevertheless, she is rocking Miss Universe like a pro.

Image

At the preliminary competition, a lot might say that she was not really shining at her evening gown. Maybe, she is still holding up a bit and reserving her explossives in the finals. But as for me, sometimes less is more, and she didn’t make herself look so desperate nor “overdoing” it just to impress people. I still see that she is hungry for the crown, yet she wants to enjoy the night. And she did looked like she’s enjoying it. In my opinion, she gave yet again another promising and stellar performance from her introduction, swimsuit and gown. I may not love her gown the way I loved her Miss Colombia gown, still, I love her stage presence, her hair and make up compliments her exotic features. So, I am satisfied overall.
To why she is on my top 6? Well, originally, she was in my top 3. And deciding to who should be in the final three is tough. And believe me, my mind is still wrestling inside, but I have to put her on my number 4 spot. Miss Colombia deserves to be in the top 3, and it is on her if she will manage to excel in the final question and answer portion come top 6. And if she does, I want her to slay the top 3.

Andrea Tovar, I am still rooting for you! And I adore you! Prove your bashers wrong my dear!

THAILAND : Second Runner Up

Image

Since it's new formation in the year 2000, seventeen long years has passed, and not one has penetrated the top 5 for Miss Thailand at Miss Universe. Their closest bid was last year as Aniporn Chalermburanawong made it to the top 10, while their other placements were in 2006 (top 20) and 2007 (top 15). Well, Thailand's drought seems to be over, as this year, they sent someone who is ready to conquer the Universe once more, via Chalita Suansane. Since her coronation as Miss Thailand Universe, I already saw a big potential in her. Truthfully, I told myself that she reminded me of Ann Loraine Colis (Miss Globe 2015). Both Chalita and Ann are exuding this Asian model-like- strong facial features, that can be very well marketable internationally. And if IMG wants to explore this side wherein a queen can be both editorial and commercial, then they hit the nail with Chalita.

Image

Since her arrival, wearing a traditional Barong from the Philippines, and her numerous luggages, Chalita was considered as a frontrunner. During the Terno Fashion Show in Ilocos, I was mesmerized by her queenly aura. It was followed by the Filipino Designers Fashion show where in she wore that blue dress like a swan. Then the preliminary competition unfolds. From her introduction look and dress, up to her catwalk skills in both the swimsuit and evening gown portion, Chalita brought her hunger and fire in its maximum potential. With that regal, expenssive looking, and an almost oscar-worthy gown, she was indeed an epitome of a true royalty. Slay it girl, SLAY IT!

She gave us drama, both hands on her hips, and she reminded me of Julia Roberts (maybe she was the asian version) when we won her Oscars. You, Chalita, did Thailand proud, and it will be a great news for Thailand if you will be able to bring home your 3rd Miss Universe crown in honor of your late King who recently passed away.

Image

Honestly, I adore her sense of style. She looks every inch luxurious, and what I like the most about Chalita is that, despite of being very fashionable and chic, her identity as a Thai woman is always there and evident, unlike other Asian's who would already looked so westernized. And with that, hands down, I salute her styling team.

In my opinion, Chalita is indeed a brand of her own. And I keep telling this to my friends, that she has the "It" factor.
She can win this. She has to win this!

PHILIPPINES : First Runner Up

Image

If there's a woman who are facing an immense pressure, well, it has to be Maxine Medina. First, the reigning queen is from your country, and she is expected to fill in the same shoes' Pia once had. In addition, her country is hosting the pageant, and if she wins, people will easily claim that it is a hometown decision. So if you are Maxine, how can you measure up, defy the odds, and prove your bashers wrong? Truthfully, I am saluting Maxine for a job well done. She has shown grace under extreme pressure, and throughout the competition, she has managed to represent the sash she's wearing with conviction and pride. I mean, she looks like a true winner already in her exquisite green fringe gown at the preliminaries. KUDOS to her!

Image

As a Filipino, I am expected to like Maxine. And I do like her, and I truly appreciate her efforts. Job well done to her styling team by the way. And I must say, Maxine has improved a lot. As a result, almost all pageant fanatics would put her in their list of frontrunners, top 5 or even as an eventual winner. But, there’s always this burning question to every Filipinos worldwide who might be tagged as “blind nationalistic” nor if you say something different from their opinion, your fellow Filipinos will say it’s “crab mentality”. So the question is, am I gonna expect for a back to back win for the Philippines?

My honest answer is --- “NO I am not expecting for a back to back win, but in my heart, I am indeed hoping that she might win it for the Philippines.” All of us might say that her waterloo is her communication skills. Some might say, she should use an interpreter. But as for me, I know she can speak in English (well, not fluently, as other Filipinos would consider her, but who cares), but I am hoping, she can be able to express herself deeper, especially in giving sensible and from the heart answers. Well, there will only be one final question come final 6. And granted if she will penetrate that far, who knows? She might just shine her brightest on that said given moment and will leave us all in awe with a satisfying winning answer. Am I right? Everything is possible indeed. Even in 2009, who would expect a back to back win at Miss Universe is likely to happen? But it did happened. So I am not losing my grip when it comes to Maxine’s chances.

Image

Well, the Philippines might not be the first Asian country to have won the Miss Universe title, because that distinction was earned by Japan, but the Philippines has the distinction of being the first Asian country to have won Miss Universe twice (1969, 1973), and last year became the first Asian country to have won that said coveted title thrice. It's humbling. It give us joy. Is the fourth crown brewing for the Philippines? Maxine indeed gave an impressive preliminary competition performance. She was proud and confident during her introduction. I applaude her in her swimsuit. Gosh, Maxine is indeed a beautiful Asian vixen. Then, she paraded her beautiful green gown sporting that "young Imelda Marcos-ish" hair, and I just can’t help but smile. She looks truly BEAUTIFUL. Hat’s off Maxine. You are telling those who are doubting you to leave the fight on your hands, because you can truly manage your own battle with ease. And you sure did Maxine. BRAVO!

VENEZUELA : Miss UNIVERSE 2016

Image

Mariam Habach emerged to be "The ONE to BEAT". And Venezuela seems to be unstoppable.
With seven (7) Miss Universe titles under their belt, Venezuela is still a strong force to be reckoned with when in comes to world of pageantry. And this year, Mariam Habach is making everyone fall for her. Well, she was tagged at first as "matured", "auntie-looking", and "oldish" by a lot of wanna-be pageant experts. But, she is now proving everybody wrong. Well, looking back in 2013, Gabriella Isler were also given the same critics, and yet managed to shine her brightest - and was declared the 62nd Miss Universe winner. So never underestimate Osmel's magic. My friend Kirina Urduja is on Cloud 9.

Image

Let's go back at the Cultural Terno Fashion Show held in Ilocos. She entered the stage and ate everyone up, effortlessly. I told my Misso friends that there's something different and distinct about how a Venezuelan walks --- that command onstage, the presence and her movement, and the aura are all impeccable. I particularly love the part when she positioned herself in the middle next to Maxine, as if she is saying, "Hey, look at me!" BRAVO! Then during the Filipino Designers Fashion Show, in a simple red long dress, Mariam yet again stole the show. Hahaha. She even stopped at the middle of the runway, and make a full turn before going forward. With such poise, fierceness, and that beautiful sexy figure, Mariam indeed stole my heart, and still stealing others for sure.

Image

Then the preliminary competition happened. And boy oh boy, Mariam indeed know how to make an entrance. With that walk in her flowy dress during her introduction, she came as if it was her night. And mind you, she sure did - IT WAS HER NIGHT. As the 85th contestant who paraded in their swimwear, this Venezuelan queen walked like pro! It is as if she is saying to the girls, “This is how you DO IT Bitches!”. Mariam was indeed smoking hot. If there’s a best in swimsuit award, hands down it’s hers.

Image

Well, most pageant fans would love drama onstage. And if you are drooling for it, Mariam just gave you one. Did you see her at her evening gown? Gosh! I am convinced that this girl came to the Philippines to win the crown. She truly knows how to play her cards. She was like making love to the audience. She came to slay, and she did it with flying "neon" colors. I do not know what kind of food these Venezuelans are eating. I would love to eat those food as well. It is as if they are God’s gift to humanity for us to worship and adore.

Image

In my heart, VENEZUELA is the most deserving candidate to win Miss Universe. If I will solely base it from her body of work since day one, she is the most consistent; she delivers; and she can be the best brand ambassador for Miss Universe. She might not be the prettiest I know, but she embodies that phrase “CONFIDENTLY BEAUTIFUL”. Well, Sushmita once said, it's "confidently beautiful", and not the "most beautiful".

Congratulations Venezuela. In my book, you just tied your win with USA with eight Miss Universe crowns and both at the number one spot. Mariam Habach indeed epitomizes the word "QUEEN".

***SPECIAL MENTIONS

PANAMA also gave a stellar performance. She nailed her evening gown. Kudos.
SINGAPORE reminds me of Mutya Datul. She was having the momentun until she wore that gown.
JAMAICA also was spectacular. Indeed, gorgeous in red.
CURACAO was growing on me, until she became a bit too much during the evening gown presentation.
POLAND is someone I will closely watch. She might even place in the finals as she was truly gorgeous during the prelims.
US VIRGIN ISLANDS aslo stole my heart last night. BEAUTIFUL indeed.
SPAIN's downfall was her hairstyle. Otherwise, she could be a possible semi finalist.

Two thumbs up for the hard work put on to this thread.

Who would have thought among the winners of Miss Venezuela 2015 Mariam would be the one that will be doing well.

kirina urduja wrote:Only you Uno, can make me come back in here... Well, what can I say? Another juicy review and I really read it from top to bottom! Kudos!

I hope to see your list too ate Kirina. Finally, I found one kakubo. I wonder where are these pipz now. I missed the convos there. >:D<

Awwww... thank you to both freddie and kring!

Well, everyday, kirina, tala, qwerty, nhoie gee, qarlo and i would share our thoughts and even though we are not really active here, we tend to talk more about pageants and other topics. So it feels like we are still in Misso.

Yeah Kring, I know you are too busy. But I hope you can make quality threads again. I know Qarlo is making one for sure.

Freddie, its nice to hear from you too. I'll try to be active. Well, making quality threads is laborious. At some point when most of the quality threads at the seal of excellence were deleted, i felt so bad. It was like burning a piece of art. So at some point i was discouraged.

Hi Uno and ate Kirina.. Good to hear that you still have communication. As for me, I have been absent in the forum for a very long time as I was assigned in Haiti as part of the country's military team giving humanitarian aid. Eventually walang internet access doon. Last December lng ako bumalik ng pinas. I am happy to find you again in the forum. Congratulations Miss France for winning the title. All I thought, Miss Haiti might have won earlier.. >:D<
