The glitz and glamour of the international final of the Miss Universe pageant could be coming to Perth as early as next year.

In a coup for local tourism, Pink Tank Events chief executive Troy Barbagallo is working to bring both the national and international finals of the world beauty pageant to WA.

Barbagallo, who has owned the rights to the WA arm of the Miss Universe competition for eight years, has been named national director of the prestigious competition, and on top of his list is ensuring the Australian and international finals come to his home town.

“The national final will rotate so potentially it will be in Perth this year or next,” he toldAAA . “We’ve also been given the rights to host the world final in Perth in 2017 or 2018. That’s massive for WA.”

Effective immediately, the appointment will see Barbagallo lead the hunt for Australia’s next Miss Universe contender while also running the Miss West Coast pageant.

“It’s a bit nerve-racking because Miss Universe is one of the greatest brands in the world,” Barbagallo said of the role. “It’s a little bit of pressure but I think we have the basis right because they wouldn’t have spoken to us if they didn’t think we knew what we’re doing — we’ve delivered two top-five girls in the world in the past five years.

“Miss West Coast will stay as a brand and it will be a feeder competition. Our top six Miss West Coast girls will go on to be the West Australian finalists for the Miss Universe competition.”

Throwing their support behind the high-profile entrepreneur, Miss Universe Australia 2014 Tegan Martin and Miss USA 2014 Nia Sanchez said they were thrilled about Barbagallo’s appointment.

“He’s always done a really good job with the WA girls so I’m interested and excited to see what he will do with the organisation,” Martin said.

“It’s going to be amazing for Perth,” Sanchez added. “When I was Miss USA I saw how much tourism can come from a pageant being hosted in a city.”

Early next year 2017 sounds kinda late.

WA is good.

Hope they can change the date better. The latest would be late of this year. End of November 2016 might be good.

There were so much international pageants crammed up in December of last year 2015.

Oz will be an excellent place if the pageant were to be held in December-January because it's summer, and because I can actually watch the pageant live, for once.

If Perth were to host this year's Miss Universe edition, then this will be the second time the city is going to do it. The first one was in 1979 when the Skylab incident took place after the pageant where Maritza Sayalero of Venezuela won their first Miss Universe crown. Good for Perth! :-)

Miss Universe: Melbourne makes 2017 final bid

FORGET the 2028 Olympics, Melbourne could be on the world stage much sooner after a bid to host the international Miss Universe final next year.

The newly appointed director of Miss Universe Australia Troy Barbagallo has confirmed to the Herald Sun that an official bid to host the international final in 2017 and 2018 has been placed with the international owner of the beauty pageant, IMG.

“I have already put in a bid on behalf of Australia to host the international final back-to-back in both 2017 and 2018 and they have shown a lot of interest in us,” the Perth businessman said.

“Australia is on their target, so now it will just come down to which state government we can get support from, and Victoria is high on our list,” he said.

Mr Barbagallo said that Miss Universe, the second most watched event in the world after the World Cup, with over 1 billion viewers, offers a great return on investment.

“The cost of putting on an event like the Grand Prix or the Olympics, in terms of infrastructure, is massive compared to Miss Universe and yet you get similar exposure to the world.”

“In terms of visibility through television and social media, Miss Universe would showcase Melbourne just as much as events like the Grand Prix.”

Mr Barbagallo said that Queensland and Western Australian governments had already shown interest, while potential private partners from Victoria had also been in touch. He said that it was a possibility that two different Australian cities could play host as part of the two year deal.

Previous host cities of Miss Universe include Las Vegas, Moscow, Bangkok, Mexico City and Miami with the Philippines tipped to host the 2016 international final.y

Tonight six Victorian finalists will compete in evening wear, swimwear and public speaking categories at the national Miss Universe Australia final at the at the Sofitel on Collins, in the hopes of securing the coveted crown.

Formerly owned by US presidential hopeful Donald Trump, before selling it to IMG, the international beauty pageant has helped to catapult the careers of models Jennifer Hawkins, Jessinta Campbell and Scherri Lee Biggs.

Wow, it's nice to see IMG wants to have the pageant outside of the USA. I'm sure in 2018 Miss Universe will be hosted in a Latin or European country.
