Chavacano and Papiamento

Postby MISS COSMOPOLITAN » Mon Nov 16, 2009 9:43 am

Chavacano, also Chabacano, is a Spanish-based creole language spoken in the Philippines. It is the common name for the six dialects of what is formally known in Linguistics as Philippine Creole Spanish. The word "Chavacano" is derived from the Spanish language meaning "poor taste," "vulgar," "common," "of low quality," "tacky," or "coarse".

The Chavacano language is the only Spanish-based creole in Asia. It has survived for more than 400 years, making it one of the oldest creole languages in the world. It is the only language to have developed in the Philippines (a member of Philippine languages) which does not belong to the family of Austronesian languages, although it shows a characteristic common to the sub-classification of Malayo-Polynesian languages, the reduplication.

It is the major language of Zamboanga City. Chavacano is also spoken in Cavite City and in parts of Ternate, Cavite and Sabah, Malaysia nearest to the Philippines, and even in Brunei and Latin America, because of recent migrations.

Papiamento (or Papiamentu) is the official and most widely spoken language on the Caribbean islands of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao (the so-called "ABC islands"). Papiamento is also spoken on the island of Sint Eustatius.

Papiamento is a creole language derived from the Portuguese language with vocabulary influences from African languages, English and Arawak native languages.

This Creole is reportedly becoming more similar to Spanish as the time passes due to extensive contact with the Hispanophone countries (particularly Venezuela), but it was originally Portuguese-based.

What's good about Speaking Chavacano is that the people who speaks it can understand or comprehend Spanish. Just like in this vid, the man behind the camera speaks spanish while the students speaks in chavacano... but still they understood each other... there were interactions. ^^

Yes, that is what is hapening. I speak Spanish and I can understand Chavacano. Well most of it. It's like Spanish and Portuguese, Spanish speaking people and Portuguese speaking people can understand each other.
