‘I am the mazdoor of my family’

Priyanka Pereira : New Delhi, Sun Aug 12 2012, 05:18 hrs
I was around nine or 10 years old, when I visited the sets of Ram Teri Ganga Maili, a movie my grandfather Raj Kapoor was directing. I remember sitting with him, observing the shooting, while also being carried away by the larger-than-life setting. At that moment, I decided that I wanted to be an actor. I realised that I couldn’t cut out acting from my life. After all, it was something that was part of me, my blood.
When I decided to join the industry, there was a hue and cry about a Kapoor girl working in films. But now I would like to clarify the myth, that there was no unwritten rule that a Kapoor daughter or daughter-in-law couldn’t work in films. If one remembers, Geeta Baliji worked in films, even after her marriage to my grand-uncle Shammi Kapoor. Jennifer aunty (Kendel) too worked in quite a few films after marriage. My mother (Babita) and Neetu aunty (Kapoor) decided to quit movies after marriage, out of their own choice. Nobody ever forced them.
However, the myth became a fact in the minds of people. And when I decided to join films, it raised a few eyebrows. While I had support from my mother and other family members, for me it was more about fighting the myth.
Hailing from a film lineage and being a star child meant that the fight to enter the film world and sustain a career there would be that much more difficult. I had to live up to the expectations of people, the reputation of my family name and fight pressures of constant comparison within and also outside the industry. I had to always face the question, “Is she going to make it in the industry?”
I was just 16 when I started shooting for my first film, Prem Qaidi. Acting was pure passion for me, which turned into a profession later on. I did not come with a set of rules to the industry. But I always remember my grandfather's advice, “Life is not a bed of roses. It’s not easy being here, because there will be ups and downs, and one has to be strong enough to sail through this journey.” This stayed with me, inspiring me to work hard.
I signed almost six to seven films at one go and did about three to four shifts during the day. My family calls me the mazdoor of the family and it’s been a running joke for years now.
I went from being the actor of the masses to the actor of the classes. But the journey wasn’t without ups and downs. I received praise and criticism, and sometimes, when the film didn’t do well, it broke my heart. I converted all that negativity into something positive — my driving force that eventually helped me reach the top. It probably led me to work hard on myself, and do roles which most actresses may not have been willing to do. While I did a Fiza and a Zubeidaa, which were emotionally strong characters, I also did Shakti where I had to be physically powerful and do fight sequences. I also did commercial films with strong women characters like Biwi No.1.
One day, I decided to quit films, settle down and start a family. It was a happy choice. I had seen it all, and that too from a young age, I had lived the life I wanted to live. I now wanted to be there for my children.
Today acting is a hobby for me. It is a pleasure to do something that I love to do. Today if I sign a film, it will be a role that challenges me, and not because of box office considerations. Today, if I want to do a film, it is for me. This is what I call the freedom to act.

CHAT Karisma Kapoor says she took up Dangerous Ishq to give her children an insight into Bollywood
After a hiatus from the film industry post marriage, Karisma Kapoor returned to Bollywood with her the ill-fated Dangerous Ishq. In Bangalore recently for the launch of a furniture store, the blue-eyed diva said, “I took up the project to give my children an insight into the manner in which the film industry functions. I have grown up as a part of the industry and wanted to give my children a view of the industry. They were thrilled at seeing me at the shoot and the idea of their mother going for shoots was new and exciting for them.”
She is currently reading scripts and is also contemplating a stint on the small screen. “It is definitely a very enticing prospect. Many actors are making a move towards TV and if a good opportunity comes along, I would like to try and make the transition.
Karisma feels that the trend of married actors such as Sridevi, Madhuri Dixit returning to Bollywood is a positive development. “I feel that despite the responsibilities marriage entails, you could always make an effort to balance the two.” However, she adds, “You need to keep a check on the roles you take up.”

Looks matter for new-age moms
Aug 25, 2012 - Sana Yaseen

Recently, Time magazine published an article titled The Tyranny of the ‘Sexy’ Mom about the increasing pressure that new-age moms face in order to look “sexy”. Seems like pressure is building on mommies back home too.
Be it dropping kids to school, attending parents’ meetings or accompanying children to social gatherings, mothers feel compelled to look good, says Dr Geetanjali Kumar, psychologist, counsellor and family therapist.
“Sometimes children also insist their mother to dress up well before stepping out. I know some daughters who either monitor or join their mothers on diets to shed some extra kilos. Mothers these days feel threatened or disconnected from their children if they are not following the latest fashion trends or are not in sink with the changing time,” says Geetanjali.
She considers an increasing influence of Western culture, cinema, Page 3 and TV a reason behind the changing psychic of mothers.
When Lara Dutta gets back in shape within a few months of delivering a baby and Karisma Kapoor, with a seven-years-old daughter, looks stunning than ever before in the latest film, Dangerous Ishq, women wonder as to why can’t they achieve the same.
“And this is why mothers are now turning to image consultants for professional help,” says Sheena Agarwal, an image consultant. “In last one year, number of mothers coming for makeover have increased eight times. Women want to look younger by wearing the right kind of clothes, makeup, haircuts,” she adds. “After having child I hardly had time to care for what I wear, so, I decided to take professional help,” says Hiral Divatia, a new mom.

Kapoor siblings make a rare outing in public
By Nimerta Chawla
19:20 GMT, 5 September 2012

The most fashionable sisters of Bollywood, Karisma and Kareena Kapoor, were recently spotted at the Mumbai airport along with cousin Ranbir Kapoor.
While the sisters were returning from Dubai after attending a promotional event for Kareena's soon to-be-released film Heroine, Ranbir had been holidaying there with his family to celebrate father Rishi Kapoor's 60th birthday.
Not seen together too often, the Kapoor cousins surely made heads turn at the airport. Not just that, the coordinated dresses of Lolo and Bebo attracted much attention.
There's no doubting their stylish wardrobes and bangon dressing most of the time, but this time the sisters chose to dress alike for the journey. Taking the comfy and casual route, both paired their cropped trousers with black tops and completed their look with strappy gladiator sandals.
Hair pulled back, French manicured nails and no makeup were the other striking similarities. While the ladies looked just fine for travel, Ranbir also seemed to have finally ditched his layered clothes.
Constantly spotted sporting leather jackets and cardigans in the summer months - he was recently seen on a television show in a leather jacket - Ranbir chose to look sporty and stylish for travel.
He was dressed according to the weather in coloured trousers, teamed with a casual blue tee and cap. Never to miss out on the accessories, Ranbir also donned a sling bag and dark aviators to complete the look.

Karisma Kapoor’s sister act!
Published: Saturday, Sep 8, 2012, 10:37 IST

Barring her own films’ marketing and promotions, actor Karisma Kapoor is known to maintain a rather low-profile. In fact, when not shooting, the actor prefers to stay away from the limelight, happy being a completely hands-on mum. Karisma has also rarely been seen talking about any of sister Kareena Kapoor’s films publicly either. This, despite the fact that she’s always been extremely supportive of Kareena. However, Karisma seems to have been making an exception for Heroine and has been heard praising Kareena’s performance in the film.
“Lolo is extremely excited about Heroine and has been raving about Kareena’s performance in the film. Although, she’s always been Kareena’s strongest supporter, we’ve never seen Karisma get so excited about any one film of Kareena. She’s always talked about Kareena’s performances across, but never specifically for one film. She thinks Heroine is Kareena’s best so far,” says an insider.
Infact, Karisma had even accompanied Kareena to Dubai for the promotions of the film recently. “I think this will be Kareena’s best performance,” says Karisma. “Only she could have pulled off a role like this. I had been dropping by on the sets just to see her perform and I was amazed. She doesn’t need any words of encouragement even in the most intense scenes. She’s a fantastic actor,” adds the doting badi behen.
Kareena shares that not just Karisma, but everyone in the family is excited about this film. “Yes, she’s always been extremely supportive, but the excitement levels for this film are something else altogether,” says Kareena, who reveals that it’s a great feeling, as Karisma is rather fair in judging when it comes to her films.
