Guca festival kicks off, 500,000 people expected!

The 52nd Dragacevo Brass Band Festival started in Guca (Serbia) on Monday and will last until August 12, with 50 bands participating, and the organizers expect over 500,000 visitors from Serbia and abroad.

The festival is a competition of brass bands that play folk music. It is unique in the world and the most important event that focuses on folk art in Serbia.

Besides the traditional brass band competition, there will also be a number of other events presenting Serbian folk art and tradition.

Visitors will be able to see exhibitions displaying works by Dragacevo seamstresses, paintings and ethnographic history, as well as traditional dances and songs.

Since the festival is such a large event, the homes of the residents are open to old and new friends coming from all parts of Serbia, but also from Republika Srpska, Macedonia, Slovenia, Austria, Poland, Germany, France, Hungary and other countries of the globe.

Guests will be able to stay at private houses and camps, but also in hotels that are located in the nearby towns of Ivanjica and Pozega.

The traditional, 52nd annual, Dragacevo trumpet gathering in Guca, western Serbia, has been opened by opera singer Radmila Bakocevic, who is hosting this year’s event. She sang the anthem of the gathering, accompanied by the brass band of Goran Rankovic. The flag was raised by Dragan Gligorijevic, the director of the International Center for Improvement of Tourism, and visitors were welcomed by the chair of the gathering board, Milomir Sretenovic ,who is also the president of Lucani municipality. The festival in Guca is a unique contest of folk brass bands in the world, and the main festival of overall Serbian folklore. It will last until August 12, and will gather 50 brass bands from the country and abroad. The organizers expect more than half a million visitors this year.
