And vice-versa. In a world where stiff competition exists, however, such 'learning from each other' can be seen as a weakness of or 'stealing' / copying an idea by one side. I just hope that genuine sharing be a norm without the vested interests.

It's nice to read comments like this. It makes me inspired.

Anyways, I posted this thread at the General Section, now it's on Miss World Section. Anyways, I think it's more fitting here.

For an on-the-go person like you, you'd find Ordos a lonely place to visit unless you enjoy cultural and historical trips.

Really? I think Ordos would be a good place to meditate. It would also be good place to take a look at history especially the significance of the conquests of Genghis Khan.

I wish I could delve further into the issues behind the MWO's decision to choose Ordos. Choosing a venue for a beauty pageant is one good subject for research.

It's a strip of land that borders between China and Mongolia. It's an authonomous region due to the large presence of ethnic Mongolians, where Mongolian culture and traditions are still practiced. It is a political strip for China particularly for economic and ideological reasons. Mongolia is predominantly Marxist due to the Russian influence whereas China promotes the tenets of Maoism.

What about Genghis Khan? There are several entries about him on the internet.

But it is interesting to note that there are conflicting views of Genghis Khan in the People's Republic of China. In the Inner Mongolia region, where there are considerable Mongols for a population of around 5 million, almost twice the population of Mongolia, he is being viewed positively. Many Hans, however, view him differently, a tyrant of some sort. While Genghis Khan never conquered all of China, his grandson Kublai Khan completed that conquest and established the Yuan Dynasty that is often credited with re-uniting China. As a whole, Genghis Khan and his successors, who completed the conquest of China after 65 years of struggle, remains a mixed topic.

And another thing, Perky, Genghis Khan tolerated religions in the Mongol Empire. His conquests were not for religious purposes, but for lands.

So what will happen on August 2012 in Ordos? A new MW will be crowned in the land of the ertswhile Mongol Empire.

[color=#00BF40You are very interesting. You know history well.

Am more interested on G Khan and his involvement, re. buddhism. Am not sure but looks like the next in succession of Dalai Lama ( presently in India ) has historical connection with Khan. Parang nabasa ko lang pero saklaw lang.[/color]

Genghis Khan was a Shamanist, but tolerant of other religions. Under his administration, religious leaders were even exempt of taxes. In fact Mongol Emperors were known for organizing religious debates that drew audiences. It was his grandson, Kublai Khan, the founder of the Yuan Dynasty, who favored Buddhism.

Actually, I specialize in socio-economics so history is part of my daily bread.

Nice info sir Eddie. I was also puzzled when I heard Ordos will be hosting Miss World because I never heard that place. I think this is their move to make the city livelier and be known by other chinese people because like what you have said they are like "ghost town", knowing there are nearly 2 billion people in China, only thousands of people lives there.

It is really safe to speculate that this is so. People from Ordos proper don't want to move to the Kanabishi Area where the new Ordos City is built. There is also a wave of migration from Inner Mongolia to southern parts of China. Oh yes, I agree with you that this is a move to populate this place, which the government has invested so much. ROI is the strategy here.

The name Dalai Lama is actually a combination of the Sino-Mongolian word: Dalai for ocean, Lama for priest. Thus, it means the Ocean of Priests, the High Priest, or the Chief of Lamas. Traditionally, the Dalai Lama is thought of as the latest reincarnation of a series of spiritual leaders who have chosen to be reborn in order to enlighten others. The first official Dalai Lama, in fact, was Gendrun Drup, who reigned in 1391–1474, several years after Genghis Khan.

In Mongolian, the title Dalai Lama may also have derived originally from the title taken by Temüjin or Genghis Khan when he was proclaimed emperor of a united Mongolia during 1206. Temüjin took the name Čingis Qāghan or "oceanic sovereign", the anglicized version of which is Genghis Khan.

It could be the reason why there is inference of Genghis Khan to the Dalai Lama. There are even groups of Buddhists who consider Genghis Khan as a true Dalai Lama, but there is no acknowledgment on this in the Tibetan Lama officialdom.

Got the feeling there is more to that! Am interested on the G Khan stuff and August 2012!

There's one interesting information about the significance of August in Chinese history with regard to the fall of the Mongol Empire in China.

It was in August 1368 when forces against the Yuan Dynasty marched towards Dadu (now Beijing) resulting in the eventual downfall of the Mongol-led dynasty in September 14, 1368. The Yuan Dynasty (founded by Kublai Khan) was replaced by the Ming Dynasty, the last dynasty in China ruled by the ethnic Han Chinese.

So what does it mean? It is very hard to speculate, but August was the month where the Han Chinese consolidated its forces that led to the downfall of the Mongols in the succeeding month. Take note that the Han Chinese comprise 92% of the present population of the People's Republic of China, 98% in Taiwan, 74% in Singapore, about 20% of the entire global human population, making it the largest ethnic group in the world

So is August 2012 another showcase of Chinese power? Again, this remains to be seen.
