This is one of my favorite Top 10 in the Pre-Trump Miss Universe era! The finalists are all beautiful. This was indeed a year of stunners but from the very beginning, it seemed like Angela Visser had no competition because she was unstoppable and the other semifinalists had no way beating her.

Trivia: 1989 is the year in which there were two Parades of Nations. In the first Parade of Nations, contestants in national costumes introduced themselves in the continental order of their countries for the first time, as opposed to the alphabetical order previously. However, they only shouted out their countries without mentioning their names. In the second Parade of Nations, which was a swimsuit and evening gown video, viewers got to know each delegate's name as well as their plans for the future. Misses Austria, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Republic of China, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Paraguay, Peru, Spain and Venezuela did not speak English in the second Parade of Nations. Miss Germany, Andrea Stelzer, had won the Miss South Africa title in 1985, but did not participate at Miss Universe that year because to anti-Apartheid demonstrations. She became the one that won two crowns of different countries.
Angela Visser is also one of the most beautiful and charismatic Miss Universe winners! It is interesting that she did not place in the 1988 Miss World pageant but went on to win Miss Universe! Same thing is the case for Miss Poland Joanna Gapinska who was unplaced in Miss World 1988 but went on to place 4th in Miss Universe.
Here's a complete list of the candidates this year who also joined Miss International and Miss World either before and after 1989: Miss World Miss World 1988: Gibraltar, Holland, Ireland, Poland and Switzerland Miss World 1989: Finland, Luxembourg, Nigeria and Spain Miss World 1990: Trinidad & Tobago Miss World 1991: Jamaica (3rd runner-up)
Miss International Miss International 1988: Iceland (semi-finalist) Miss International 1989: Austria, Guam and Scotland (semi-finalist)

angela visser even became even more beautiful years after her reign especially during those years when she served as a commentator of miss universe between 1991 to 1994.. during one of the segments of miss universe 1994 finals held here in the philippines, when the camera went to focus on her face, i saw how beautiful she really is/was. but what endeared angela to me even more were her warm personality and sweet speaking voice. she somewhat reminds me of kim basinger.

I can so remember this Miss Universe.. I was on third grade were as a child, I only paid attention to the Parade of Nations, then afterwards, I would play with my cousin's barbie dolls secretly dressing them up with the national costumes that I cut with cloth and paper.

I agree! I love re-watching those editions just to see Angela Visser, she blossomed and looked even more beautiful than before!
