The Legacy Of 'Bionic': Why Christina Aguilera's Misunderstood Album Was Actually Ahead Of Its Time

Image

by Sam Lansky

Hey Little Dreamers! I'm Sam Lansky, pop scholar, and this is "Pop Think," my weekly column dedicated to shining a light on the oft-ignored corners of the pop music universe. Let's get to it: Is there a pop album from the last several years that was as unjustly sh**ted on (to borrow sentiment from Nicki Minaj) as Christina Aguilera's Bionic? The big-voiced chanteuse's sixth studio album received mixed reviews and underperformed commercially, while her image took a beating in the press for being messy and misdirected, even though the record was, at times, precociously brilliant.

So, surprise! As your resident pop apologist, on the eve of the two-year anniversary of Bionic's release (time flies, doesn't it, kids?), I'm traveling back through time to take a look back at Christina's wildly misunderstood, sometimes-genius Bionic—and reflecting on how the ferocious songbird, who's found a new life as the HBIC on "The Voice," had a surprisingly forward-thinking approach on her last album.

Expectations ran exceptionally high for Christina Aguilera's album Bionic, with a list of top-shelf collaborators both mainstream and indie; big names like Tricky Stewart, Ester Dean, Nicki Minaj, and Polow da Don were joined by more alt-leaning voices like Ladytron, Le Tigre, Santigold, Peaches and Sia, for a sound that promised to be diverse and collaborative. But that left-of-center sound was missing from the album's debut single, "Not Myself Tonight," an aggressive stomper that drew comparisons to Lady Gaga and peaked at a decent-but-not-great No. 23 on the Hot 100. The second single, "Woohoo," featuring Nicki Minaj, topped out at a dismal No. 79 on that same chart, and the final effort, "You Lost Me," failed to enter the Hot 100 at all -- Christina's first single to do so. Quietly, and without much fanfare, the Bionic era drew to a close.

So. What went wrong? Her collaborator, Daniel Hunt of Ladytron, blamed RCA, saying bluntly that Christina's label "f***ed up everything" when it came to putting together the final album. And while it's always convenient to blame the label for the faults of an artist, it did certainly seem as though Christina's original artistic vision -- to create a distinctively fresh product -- got muddled somewhere along the way, perhaps by the overreaching commercial expectations of a chart-conscious team.

But Ladytron was right -- most of the album's best tracks were relegated to the bonus tracks only available on the deluxe edition of the album. And what's startling is how thrilling most those songs are two years after their release. If the tracks on the standard edition were modern but fairly pedestrian, split neatly between uptempo, hypersexual club bangers like "Desnudate" and "Glam" and weepy ballads like "Lift Me Up" and "You Lost Me," the songs on the deluxe edition are forward-thinking and even timeless, galactic pop with subversive, ambient production. The hand-claps and dissonant layered vocals on "Monday Morning," co-penned by San by Santigold, evoke the '80s with subtlety and charm (it wouldn't sound out of place on Ladyhawke's first album). "Bobblehead" is a dazzlingly weird rap-and-percussion diss track, and the Ladytron-produced "Birds of Prey" is a masterwork of sinister bad-trip anxiety. My personal favorite, though, is "Little Dreamer," the iTunes bonus track, another Ladytron collab, which walks the tightrope between wistful affection and melancholy grief, and shows off Christina's vocals at their finest. They're powerful, emotive and more controlled than the melismatic belting for which she's frequently recognized.

In its own way, Bionic neatly illustrates the dangers artists face when aggressively trying to keep up with "current" music. Mainstream music is a runaway express train hurtling itself toward the trendiest end of the pop music zeitgeist. As a result, futuristic pop tracks can already sound dated by the time they're released. And even when they don't, those chart-chasing songs don't age particularly gracefully. But two years after the fact, Bionic's moments of greatness remain about as good as it gets. On her next album, I'm gunning for Christina to show us that side of her, stronger than ever.

I love Christina Aguilera. The comparison between her and Lady Gaga killed this album. Before Gaga made it big with Just Dance, La Aguilera was already into electropop music and suddenly Gaga exploded into the scene. That made Christina looked like she was copying Gaga. They're both great though. Birds of Prey is a great song and so is Little Dreamer.

Is Christina Aguilera Set To Work With British Super Producers Xenomania On New Album?

Image

If the ever-lovely Beth Ditto is to be believed, she may well be.

In a recent interview with Pop Justice, Ditto revealed that while she and her Gossip bandmates were in England recording at Xenomania Towers, the rural headquarters for super-producer Brian Higgins and his crew, they encountered a number of other musicians – but it's the one who wasn't there at the time but was planning on "coming in" that got us the most excited.

"Florrie was there, Annie was there. That’s when Nathan and I were there anyway. And there were some other people that I don’t remember. I think they were up and coming people," Ditto said when asked who was hanging around the studio. "But they were like, 'Oh in a week Christina Aguilera’s coming in,' and I was like 'please let me stay here.'"

Oh, really?

Aguilera talked up her new album during an April episode of her hit show "The Voice," telling Christina Milian, "I've been in the studio, hard at work. Different producers I'm working with have just excited me so much and have given me amazing tracks and beats and material I've been writing to and [with] writing partners. It's just filled with fun and excitement, and it's gonna come out later this year, and I'm very, very excited to share it with my fans, finally."

If one of the producers she mentioned does turn out to be Xenomania, Aguilera's fans should start getting excited. The British songwriting and production team, comprised mainly of Higgins and Miranda Cooper, have an affinity for radio friendly Europop and are revered in the UK for their work with some of the country's top acts, including Pet Shop Boys, The Saturdays, Sugababes and, in particular, Girls Aloud. They've also worked with Kylie Minogue, one of the world's biggest dance-pop superstars, and Higgins co-wrote Cher's international blockbuster "Believe."

It could be a marriage made in pop heaven – one of the best voices in mainstream music hitting the studio with producers renowned for making forward-thinking dance music that strays far enough off the well-worn path to be interesting but not so far that it won't find radio love. Sign us up, Xtina!

I have loved here since her Genie In A Bottle days and until now I still love her and will always do. I admire her for being a true artist. I remember she said once that regardless of where the music industry was gonna take her, she needed to be herself even if it meant that she was only gonna sell 1 record or two. I love Beautiful from Stripped, Mercy On Me and The Right man from Back To Basics. What do you like about her?

Oh yes UNDERSTAND is also a gem. I used to fight with everyone actually. 3 of my closest friends were into Britney and they kept comparing the two. I never compared her to Brit because I thought she was simply incomparable. She was so beautiful in Burlesque right? The camera loves her at every angle. I love that song she did with Cee Lo called Nasty.I hope she comes out with a new song very soon.

Christina Aguilera holds hands with boyfriend Matthew Rutler as they catch a departing flight out of LAX Airport on Thursday (June 14) in Los Angeles.

The 31-year-old entertainer and Matthew have been collaborating professionally!

“Matt has come a long way from being a production assistant on Christina‘s movie Burlesque,” a source exclusively tells JustJared.com. “He’s now a songwriter, working on new tracks for her new album. People will be surprised by the sound they’ve put together.”

This performance drove me crazy! I felt how she was beautifully restraining herself to overpower the the two others. She was respectful towards Madonna as she didn't let out the power pipes. I would have wanted it more if she did it though. LOL!

Pop singer Christina Aguilera urged by her family to call as her grandparents are on their death beds

The Daily Telegraph
June 21, 2012 10:00 PM

Image

IT is well known she's estranged from her father Fausto, who she claims physically and emotionally abused both her and her mother when she was a girl.

While she hasn't seen her father for some time, Christina Aguilera has also reportedly also not been in contact with her grandparents.

Now her family members are reaching out to the singer and The Voice USA judge, urging her to get in contact with them as her grandparents are said to be gravely ill.

In an interview with Star magazine, Christina's uncle Johann Aguilera said they desperately want Christina and her son Max to see the family.

"Christina's grandfather is 86 and her grandmother is 82. They have health issues," Johann said.

"I don't know how much longer they will last. Time is running out."

Johann said Christina's grandparents would be overjoyed to be back in contact with their granddaughter and great grandson.

"I know how much joy it would give my parents if she came back into our lives again. It would mean the world to them if they could see Christina before they die," he said.

Earlier this year Christina suggested she and her father Fausto might be able to rebuild their relationship.

In an interview with Latina magazine she said: "I've talked about how rough things were for me and I'm sure he's heard it. He can't be thrilled about it. So maybe one day we can do lunch ... I'm 31 years old now. Maybe it's time."

In a 2009 interview with E! Christina said she witnessed a lot of "unpleasant things" while growing up.

"Growing up I did not feel safe. Feeling powerless is the worst feeling in the world," she said.

"I turned to singing as an outlet. The pain at home is where my love for music came from."

Christina's father has denied he abused Christina and her sister Rachel.

In 2002 the army sergeant said: "My relationship with her mother was tense and I wasn't perfect. Shelly and I disagreed on a lot of things and we both had hot tempers. But I love Christina and her sister Rachel.

"I never abused them in any way and they know that."

Marie Carr Walks Down the Aisle Singing Christina Aguilera's "The Right Man" at Her Wedding

June 26th, 2012 2:46 PM

Marie Carr has given walking down the aisle new meaning.

When the Cincinnati bride performed a rendition of Christina Aguilera‘s “The Right Man” as she entered her wedding and approached her husband-to-be, there wasn't a dry eye in the house. For good reason. Talk about making an entrance!

Watch Carr singing and walking down the aisle:

Everybody was taken aback, but no one more so than her husband, Devin, who said, “It was amazing. I couldn’t wait to spend the rest of my life with her.”

Marie herself said, “I wanted him to know how perfect he is to me. I thought the best way to do that would be to sing to him as I walked down the aisle.”

Online, viewer response has been split into several categories, namely "FAKE!!", "Most amazing video ever!!", and "This is terrible." What do you think?

The Voice US: Adam Levine denies rift with Christina Aguilera

July 1st, 2012 by Sarah Lynn.

As fans of The Voice US will know, there have been rumours circulating that coaches Adam Levine and Christina Aguilera aren’t overly fond of each, and various media outlets have stated that during filming for the show’s second season, Maroon 5 front man Adam and Christina bitched constantly.

However, while speaking to MTV News, Adam – who performed with his band on The Voice UK last month – claims that the rumours are “BS.”

He said, “We bickered a little bit in the beginning, to be totally truthful, we had a little bit of a rough start, just kind of all getting to know each other.”

However, he added, “But I love her, she’s the best, and we’re having a fantastic time as of late on the set…

“She’s great, and all of that is sensationalised media BS … so don’t worry about any of that.”

And while explaining that he’d much rather talk about his music than respond to gossip about himself and Christina, he said, “It affects you as much as you let it.

“I mean, I know the deal, so as long as I do, it doesn’t matter what people say.

“Think about if we listened to what people say all the time, imagine how crazy it would make you.”

It’s going to be interesting to see what the relationship is like between Adam and Christina when the show returns later this year!

Another one here dear: http://www.billboard.com/news#/news/sou ... 6352.story
I am so excited!

It's been two years and two seasons of "The Voice" since Christina Aguilera's last studio album, but new music from the veteran pop star may be arriving before summer's end.

A source tells Billboard that Aguilera is working hard on the follow-up to 2010's "Bionic," and that a new single is expected to be released in early August. The club banger was produced by Swedish pop hit-maker Max Martin, and its chorus is built around the line, "All I want to do is what you wanted."

Martin -- best known for producing hits by Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson and Katy Perry, among others -- has yet to helm a single for Aguilera.

Meanwhile, duets with Blake Shelton and Cee Lo Green, Aguilera's fellow coaches on NBC's "The Voice," are apparently in the works for the singer's forthcoming album as well. Last April, Green revealed that he and Aguilera were indeed working on a follow-up to their first collaboration, "Nasty," which surfaced online last year after failing to make the final track list of Aguilera's "Burlesque" soundtrack in 2010. Aguilera's last collaboration with a "Voice" co-star, as a featured vocalist alongside Adam Levine on Maroon 5's 2011 single "Moves Like Jagger," netted the pop star her fifth chart-topper on the Hot 100, and her first No. 1 in 10 years.

'The Voice's' Chris Mann Signs Major Label Deal

Released through RCA Records in June 2010, "Bionic" has sold 308,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The set failed to produce a hit single for the singer -- its highest-charting cut, "Not Myself Tonight," peaked at No. 23 on the Hot 100. By comparison, the soundtrack to "Burlesque," to which Aguilera contributed eight songs, has moved 593,000 copies since its November 2010 release, according to SoundScan.

In March 2011, the singer signed on as a coach for "The Voice," which wrapped its second season on NBC in May. The reality competition will return for its third season this fall.
