ARE YOU IN FAVOR OF REOPENING U.S. BASES ?

Postby Perky555 » Sat Jun 09, 2012 1:10 am

Robert Johnson writes:

With the U.S. moving the majority of its naval fleet to the Pacific, commanders are eagerly looking for invitations to park the planes and ships that will be pouring into the region.

Travis Tritten at Stars and Stripes reports that the Pentagon has apparently been fanning the old flame of friendship with the Philippines and will be re-opening two bases it left in 1991 — Subic Bay and Clark Air Base.

The U.S. had a falling out with the island nation in the early nineties and pulled out of the bases, which were then built-up by a series of private developers and builders. How useful what's left is a matter of debate, but the locations used to be major centers of operation for American forces in the Pacific.

Clark Air Base and its military reservation are 244 square miles of land that played a vital role for the U.S. during the Vietnam war and is capable of hosting the largest of America's military aircraft.

Subic Bay played an even greater role in U.S. operations and until the withdrawal in 1991 it was the largest American overseas military base in the world. The waters at Subic Bay should have no problem hosting U.S. submarines and the largest of naval ships.

The Philippines has been embroiled in a major dispute with China in the nearby Spratley Islands and Beijing is unlikely to be happy with this

CHINA CAN OBLITERATE PHILIPPINES IN A MATTER OF DAYS. IF THERE'S A WAR BETWEEN CHINA AND PHILIPPINES WHO WOULD THEY ASK FOR HELP ? HA HA HA HA :%)) :%)) :%)) NOT THOSE FILIPINOS WHO ARE AGAINST THE BASES BUT THE AMERICANS...

AND AS AN AMERICAN I WOULD DEFINITELY BE AGAINST ANY INVOLVEMENT BY ANY AMERICAN. THERE'S NO NEED TO SACRIFICE AMERICAN LIVES FOR UNGRATEFUL PEOPLE...

TAKE THE CASE OF AFGHANISTAN/ IRAQ OR EVEN PAKISTAN. THEY'RE JUST USING AMERICAN. ONE AMERICAN LIFE IS NOT WORTH SAVING OTHER COUNTRY. I STRONGLY OPPOSE AMERICANS TO HELP ANY FOREIGN COUNTRIES AFTER AFGHANISTAN.... ENOUGH. :=p :=p :=p :=p

I DO NOT FAVOR AMERICAN BASES IN THE PHIL. HOWEVER, WHO WOULD PROTECT PHILIPPINES IN CASE OF WAR ? MAYBE RUSSIA.. HA HA HA HA.

A resounding NO! However, I would love for the Philippines to designate an island (out of 1,107 islands) to accomodate the U.S. troops and their ships, subsmarines, arsenals, and other equipments, with economic and military benefits in return, however, without accomodating members of the military into the mainland where they abuse their stay and rights protected by treaties of the United States and the Philippines.

I wish not to go into details of the social impacts in the Philippines when foreign military is present in the country.

True but China can also do serious damage to the United States with its million strong military and nuclear weapons. I dont know why Abnoy is very arrogant in engaging with China in military terms instead of economic terms as what the US is doing. Yes, the US is also engaging China in trade and its biggest trading partner actually so I dont know about the US if they will really help when war comes. The Philippines or its abnoy leader is one mayabang leader then to take on China when it should instead stimulate trade between their countries esp. it being its neighbor. Warfreak na siraulo talaga si Abnoy!

America cannot and shouldn't act as the police watchdog of the rest of the world the Philippines included. When national interests are at stake, there's no such thing as a free load or FREE AID as the nomenclature connotes. Everything comes with a dear economic price, no question about this. Certainly America will not spend a mere cent for not obtaining some things in exchange, many times over in return. The Philippines can only remain important due to an overload of American business and territorial interests in the region. But not necessarily, as the scatter of 7106 islands in the archipelago national interests are concerned. Can America survive without the Philippines? You must know the better answer. I've been a resident off-and-on and was schooled in the US of A for a while, but my answer is NO!!!!

"Beauty" did not claim that the Philippines has better and far more sophisticated military than the United States. It is a known fact that Philippine military is ill-equipped and cannot survive foreign attacks. The question of "Beauty" regarding the United States survival without the Philippines is a RETORICAL one and need be answered per se as the answer is obvious.

the opening of the military bases in clark and subic is vital to our country. why? because the US is the most powerful country in the world. with the americans at our shore, chinese shits wouldn't dare to attack us. we would have time to upgrade our navy and aerial units. But things may change in the coming years as US and China are engaged in a power tug-of-war. Some economists predict that Chinese mind boggling 9% growth in the last 25 years can overtake the US weak 1.2% growth.

And americans on these bases would mean MANY business!
