Its time Jamaica start to take things seriously and do great things without fair. Trinidad and Tobago has a similar culture and a smaller population and they have been able to achieve in 3 consecutive years (2004,05,06) what Jamaica took 11 years to do(1999,2004,2010). T&T knows how to showcase their beauties to the world, whether unconventional and get everyone to notice. That takes strategy and preparation.

It can be done again, reinvent LeeAnn Forbes (my sentimental favourite) and recycle some of the top girls from last years MTTU and MTTW pageants and roll them out in the future. Last year showed some great girls. Its a pity it didn't translate into international success.

I find it quite ignorant when the Miss Universe Organization on a yearly basis emphasize what they are looking for in a WINNER and that the competition is primarily based on physical beauty, yet organizers in Jamaica insist on not taking this into consideration when selecting a candidate. They would prefer to send a library card with a bad extensions...than a beautiful girl who would make an impact.

Another thing....... with regard to reading this thread... while it is quite entertaining..... subtle racism is present and I don't see this " social construct" going away anytime soon.,,,,, Jamaica's motto is "out of many, one people" and I find it sickening that a nation that has embraced people regardless of how they appear physically...that when it comes to beauty...will default to finding faults re skin tone.

Why is it when a dark skinned girl is a favourite people view it as racism or an assault against brownings? That argument is just ridiculous. Racial undertones are always a reality in Jamaica, especially in pageants. Sometimes it works for you and other times it works against you. There is no scientific method of measuring beauty its a subjective issue. If you change a panel of judges 10 times you might end up with 10 completely different results.

FYI Novia McDonald Whyte was a judge in 2010, 2011 and I bet she'll be back again in 2012.

It's not an assault against "brownings". Year after year... people in Jamaica keep bringing up this browning argument and it's just irrelevant. At the end of the day... whether you dark or brown.... your still a person of color....and you will be viewed as such! I just feel at the end of the day we need to move pass this and just embrace beauty regardless of how it looks.... yep! i admit going into it i was not her fan at all... a lot of ppl weren't but she shut us up and she tore up the semifinal round. She definitely LOST the crown that year as you put it. She messed up and I always feel that she secretly didn't think she could win. But I don't think it would have been a very happy reign for her anyway. People are always referring to her top5 placement as unfortunate. Imagine if she had won! I wish Trinidad was still sending girls like her!
