I was just reading the book "Making Miss India Miss World" by Susan Dewey, who was given an unprecedented level of access to Miss India in 2003 as part of the organization's plan to make itself truly transparent. Susan was given access to all the applications, with the judges' comments, observed the selection process, and lived with and attended the training program with the girls, who she got to know very well.
Among some interesting revelations:
1. Judges were given extensive power point presentations of 1-2 hours on how exactly to score each aspect
2. The pageant was run by Pradeep Guha between 1992-2002 (which interestingly, is when it started to go down) when the focus shifted from finding a Miss India to finding a MW or MU who happened to be Indian
3. The Miss Universe winner was chosen based on her physical beauty and height, because of the belief that "intelligence did not matter in Miss Universe." The Miss World winner was chosen based on her speaking abilities because they believed that "at Miss World, qualities other than just physical beauty are important," while the Miss Earth winner was a girl who was "not quite good enough for the major pageants, but deserved to represent the country internationally."
I wonder if this is true? Susan had access to all the scoring sheets etc. so I suppose it may be the case? But I wonder...
