and I am NOT speaking on behalf of all the Pageant Experts here.

A campfire is a fire lit at a campsite, to serve the following functions:
light, warmth, a beacon, an insect and/or apex predator deterrent, to cook, and for a psychological sense of security.
In the beauty pageant world, there are these campfires lighting the whole scene with a clear spectrum of colors and lights.
And just like in the Philippines, two names in the field of beauty pageantry
gave much pride and honor:
Rodgil Flores and Jonas Antonio Gaffud.
Almost every year, both names always come head to head in every national pageants in the Philippines.
Is there really "something" special about being in a "camp"?
Will it still be possible for new handlers to penetrate in such competitions like Binibining Pilipinas and win a title?
Or will it always be sealed that the eventual winner had to be ALWAYS from a "camp"?

RODGIL FLORES

That crown marked the 26 years drought for the Philippines in winning in any of the the BIG 3 (then) Beauty pageants.
But in 2005, a re-entry beauty named Precious Lara Quigaman bagged the Binibining Pilipinas International title and eventually ENDED the Philippines drought by winning it's 4th Miss International crown.
Lara is under the Rodgil Flores and that honor is automatically under his resume.
Since Miss Earth established its reputation, the world has embraced the BIG 4
(Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss International, Miss Earth).
And three years after, another Rodgil's baby was crowned and marked the Philippines very first Miss Earth winner via Karla Paula Henry.
Indeed, another international victory for Rodgil's team.

JONAS ANTONIO GAFFUD

It is a known fact how Filipinos embraced Miss Universe and after Miriam Quiambao's ALMOST winning it in 1999, a 10 year dark shadow was experienced by the Philippines.
It was unntil the reinstatted queen named Maria Venus Raj touched down in Miss Universe arena in a major major way.

Thanks to the late Melody Gersbach who introduced Venus to the magical hand & supervision of Mr. Gaffud.
After winning 4th Runner Up, the hunger for the crown continues and a rookie named Shamcey Supsup proved the world that the Philippines is back and ready to conquer the crown.

Shamcey's 3rd Runner Up placement cemented the fact that the Philippines is a force to be reckoned with from Asia.

MY TAKE ON THIS

Well, it has been interesting to know that we have these 2 beauty queenmakers as we may say. Being in camp as such, enables the girls to have proper trainings they need prior to their competition. It serves as an "AGENCY" wherein young hopefuls can be able to shine and be polished.

As we can see, Jonas Gaffud girls most of the time were being crowned
Miss Uinverse Philippines.
The most recent is Janine Tugonon, their 8th Miss Universe Philippines.
(2001,2005,2006,2007,2008,2010,2011,2012)
Venus and Shamcey's placement in Miss Universe is a testimony that Gaffud's main specialty is perhaps really on the 'Miss Universe' side.

Just the same with Rodgil's girls, whom most of the time being placed
as Binibining Pilipinas International.
The most recent is Nicole Schmitz, their 7th.
(2002,2005,2006,2007,2008,2011,2012)
It was only in 2004 (Maricar Balagtas) and 2009 (Pamela Bianca Manalo) that a Rodgil baby was crowned Miss Universe Philippines.

Can we all conclude that there is a pattern going on? Or a cycle perhaps?
From the screening, mostly the previous queens are requested by Mrs. Araneta to judge and choose the eventual official candidates for Binibining Pilipinas.
Most often than not, mostly the girls under such camps would place and will be considered.

Can the previous queens REFRAIN themselves from being a BIASED
knowing they belong to a "camp" and each camps are literally "head to head"?
Or is it payback time to their camps and are forced to make the impossible possible?
In 2012, 12 out of 13 entries from Jonas Gaffud made it until Maxene Medina was replaced making it 11 out of 13. WOW!

During the finals, 3 out of 5 came from Gaffud camp (Bb. Pilipinas Tourism - Katrina Dimaraanan, 1st Runner Up - Elaine Kay Moll, Miss Universe Philippines - Janine Mari Tugonon) while 1 came from John de la Vega (2nd Runner Up- Ali Forbes) and 1 from Rodgil's camp (Bb. Pilipinas International - Nicole Schmitz).

In addition, both winners of Best in Swimsuit (Schmitz) and Best in Gown (de los Reyes) were all from Rodgil Flores' camp while Miss AVON and Miss PAL was given to a Gaffud girl (Lastimosa).

There was even a rumor that Precious Lara Quigaman was the one who were asked to choose to who among the ladies deserves the best in gown and best in swimsuit.

Quigaman as we all know is a Rodgil baby and the two recipients were all Rodgil's baby. Well, again, it's just rumor.
But where do we really draw the line here?
Just like the 2 questions I raised in the beginning of this thread:
Will it still be possible for new handlers to penetrate in such competitions like Binibining Pilipinas and win a title?
Or will it always be sealed that the eventual winner had to be ALWAYS from a "camp"?

In 2003, an underdog named Carla Gay Balingit bagged the Binibining Pilipinas Universe title. She was NOT under a major vehicle wherein she can ride.
In 2008, Janina San Miguel won Bb. Pilipinas World under Jontie Martinez while Czarina Catherine Gatbonton gave John dela Vega his very first win via Bb. Pilipinas World in 2010.

In 2010, another newbie named Pang Salonga made it. Krista Kleiner won Bb. Pilipinas International title.

In my opinion, these new handlers are like "Indie Films". And just like Indie Films in the Philippines, they started so little that most often they are unrecognized. Until eventually, they started winning recognitions and awards in the international scene and critics worldwide are giving them such praises. This finally opened the eyes of the people who kept themselves "INSIDE A BOX" of the the mainstream film makers.
I believe this is possible to happen as well in the beauty pageant world in the Philippines. Given the opportunity, these independent and new handlers can also prove the world about their own value and worth.

Sadly, most girls are tempted to leave their mentors and chose to jump with other BIG camps in quest of a greener grass. Both Janine Tugonon and Luzelle Felipe had made this "regodon" and moved under the supervision of a powerhouse camp - Jonas Gaffud. Well, they cant blame these girls.
Just like when a politician is running for a position, you NEED a STRONG MACHINERY to back you up.
It is still their call and it is up to them on how they want their cards to be played.
But for now, the evident facts about these two machineries are helping the Philippines in shaping and gaining it's powerhouse status back.
Politics may always come to play and perhaps Madame Stella is confident enough when it comes to Jonas and Rodgil.
But regardless, I hope time will come that Madame will also be able to embrace those newbies.
Tagged by a new saying, "Beauty is not definite, Madame Stella defines it.",
it is still not too late for her to embrace the unknown and welcome the unwelcome.
In the end, we can only hope for a better Team PHILIPPINES!
