It will not really be her choice. PR follows US laws, and the MUPR is a "captive" franchise for MU, so they have to follow the MU guidelines. If Desiree denies entry to transsexuals and/or rigs it against their win, she is going to only lock herself into a long and ugly legal and PR fight.

This is disgusting for many reasons.

1) You are making her sexuality, the issue of sexuality, a joke. There is a clear difference between ridiculing, and acknowledging the complicated nature of this issue and disagreeing with the decision to allow transexual women compete.

2) This also implies lesbian women shouldn't compete. Although we have not had a famous case of a lesbian competing at an international pageant, I would love for them too, because they would present such a unique perspective on the world, their role as an international beauty queen and their role as a representative of the LGBT community around the world.

Comments like these need to stop. If a correspondent, someone who is designated as official by missosology itself, is shocked and appalled by statements such as these in the forum, there is a clear issue that needs to be addressed.

No hun, Puerto Rico does not follow ALL US laws, PR has it's own laws too. We are not a state of the US, we're a common wealth, in spanish it means ESTADO LIBRE ASOCIADO, a FREE STATE THAT'S ASSOCIATED TO USA, we don't follow all US laws by default. The rules of MUPR say that only naturally born females can compete, so if at the moment of presenting their birth certificate, it says that they were born males, they can't compete, as simple as that. The MUPR Organization is like any other national pageant that has it's own rules and has nothing to do with MU nor MUSA, our political status has nothing to do with anything. Like she said herself, all National Pageants have their own rules that not necessarily have to follow the rules of MU, any change of the MU rules does not affect the MUPR organization. If Desirée chooses to change to rules just to follow the MU rules, that's different, but it's not obligatory for her to do so.

Oh and I forgot, MUPR does not only crown a girl for MU, they also crown 4 other girls for other pageants.

I couldn't have expressed the problem better. Of course this in the slow end of the prestige of the Miss Universe pageant. I just don't want to wake up one day and learn that one of the oldest and best beauty pageant in the whole word has been won by someone who used to be a man. This is not about tolerance or equality here, but there is a place for everything in life and I don't think transsexuals should take part in a pageant made for real women.

The thing is that, the past week, we've seen plenty of comments against transgender people in a negative way mostly, but we have to separate those two issues because they are not the same. I don't have anything against transsexual people because I can understand that they wanted to change sex for a X or Y reason, but it doesn't give them the right to be part of something that isn't made for them.

MUO just made the wrong choice here. Plus, I believe this is pretty hypocritical because obviously they just wanted people to believe that they respect human rights and everything, but I'm pretty sure they won't allow a transgender woman to be part of the semi finalists and even less win the crown...so the whole story is pointless, they just did it BAD!
