I am utterly surprised by the comments here since all, except for a few that can be counted with the fingers of my hands, are using defamatory language against Jenna. It saddens me that people use harsh words that from an outsider's point of view can translate into transphobia. One of the most popular arguments or simple comments made is that she is not a "real woman." But then you can ask yourself: what makes a real woman? Being a natural-born female? Portraying or exuding a "womanly essence?" If the former is what most hold on to and use as the basis to allow an individual's participation in the Miss Universe pageant, than Jenna is easily ruled out. But if the latter is what most want from an individual participating in the pageant, than doesn't she deserve a chance? For me, a Miss Universe is much more than a natural-born female, more than exuding a womanly essence (externally and internally), more than an image of women: it is one person that can be the representation of a whole human being-- after all, do you think all Miss Universe participants view themselves first as women or part of the human race, a human being?

Yes, like Valleriam rightly stated, not many people are ready for the change (and that is understandable), but to use that language is just unacceptable for me. It's as if many who identify themselves as homosexuals or lesbians have never experienced such vicious bashing against them.

Plus, I'm sure not all transexuals will leave all of their current responsibilities to enter the pageant; unfortunately, they have other issues to worry about: assimilation and discrimination.

I couldn't have expressed the problem better. Of course this in the slow end of the prestige of the Miss Universe pageant. I just don't want to wake up one day and learn that one of the oldest and best beauty pageant in the whole word has been won by someone who used to be a man. This is not about tolerance or equality here, but there is a place for everything in life and I don't think transsexuals should take part in a pageant made for real women.

The thing is that, the past week, we've seen plenty of comments against transgender people in a negative way mostly, but we have to separate those two issues because they are not the same. I don't have anything against transsexual people because I can understand that they wanted to change sex for a X or Y reason, but it doesn't give them the right to be part of something that isn't made for them.

MUO just made the wrong choice here. Plus, I believe this is pretty hypocritical because obviously they just wanted people to believe that they respect human rights and everything, but I'm pretty sure they won't allow a transgender woman to be part of the semi finalists and even less win the crown...so the whole story is pointless, they just did it BAD!

I completely agree, I don't hate Jenna, nor have I said obscene things about her or transsexuals like some others here, I don't share those same thoughts because I have no problem with transsexuals, I just don't think it's the right thing for transsexuals to compete in a pageant that was exclusively for naturally born females, because it doesn't matter if legally she's a woman, if she had 500 surgeries and looks like a real woman, there's still genetic things that she can't change that give her advantage over real women, like our National Director said, women have more fat in their bodies then men, therefore, it's easier for men to get a great body, and eventually they could even have better results than women, which gives them an advantage, and Jenna, she could have all the surgeries and treatments in the world, but genetically, she has those characteristics of men in her, which doesn't make it a fair competition for the other women. And that's just one simple reason she shouldn't compete along with other naturally born females, there's many other reasons...

Yeah, I think so too. Vietnam for example has a law that strictly prohibits transgenders from participating in female beauty pageants. Any kind of plastic surgery is also prohibited in every beauty pagaent in Vietnam.

On ABC-TV’s 20/20 tonight (Friday), Donald Trump — interviewed by Barbara Walters — confirmed that Jenna Talackova can compete in the Miss Universe Canada pageant, and if she wins, can go on to compete in the Miss Universe international pageant, respresenting this country.
Trump also confirmed that women who have transitioned can compete in Miss Universe pageants in the future.
This marks a precedent in the history of the Miss Universe pageant born in 1952.

I dont think many countries will be able to accept transexuals in their pageants. In Canada´s case, their laws accept the sex change of Jenna as a legal female and even her passport says she is a female. In my country, ours laws won´t accep´t that. You can change your sex and still be considered a male and your passport or ID will say your male and not a female. Also the age of retirement for men is different than women´s age. Anyway, Panama allow transgender to compete, he won´t be allow to chose a name like "Jenna", he will be called by his real name and his passport will says "male" as his gender. I think Mr Trump has to be more specific with this new change.
