Meet Alixandra the great - Derry’s earth angel











This is the stunning beauty from Derry who’s made it to the final of the influential Miss Earth competition.

But you’re more likely to find eco-girl Alixandra Halliday cleaning up the North West’s beaches or pottering around in her family greenhouse in Eglinton - than practising her make-up skills in the mirror.

Alixandra (20), a photography student has made it to the regional finals of the Miss Earth competition and will be gunning for glory hoping to become Northern Ireland’s representative in the Miss Earth televised world finals later this year.

The Derry girl reached the semi final after submitting an online entry form about herself, and made further progress into the competition by successfully being selected as a grand finalist from her outstanding private interview.

And dad’s company JC Halliday and Sons Citroen have agreed to sponsor her for the final.

Alixandra said: “I would never have been able to have done this without the support of Derry’s J.C Halliday and Sons; hopefully I will do them proud and go on to win one of the most prestigious national beauty pageants.”

Derry girl Alixandra is currently working in Italy for the summer where she’s been educating locals near the village of Pisa on the benefits of recycling plastic bottles.

“I’m just helping to make people more aware of the amount of waste that they throw out and doing something about it,” she said.

“Before I left for Italy I did a few things like persuading my friends to go and clean up a few beaches and forests with me.

“I also persuaded my Mum Claire to get a greenhouse where we grow vegetables and fruit.”

The former St Mary’s Limavady student will continue to promote a cleaner and healthier environment in her local community for the chance to walk away with “The Green Award winner” on the night of the finals

Alixandra said: “As I am a photographer and get a lot of my inspirationfrom the beautiful land and scenery around us, we should try and preserve it as much as possible and for future generations. Ireland is known for its greenness, so what would we be without it?”

Alixandra is also set with a challenge to raise funds for Miss Earth’s community project ‘Girls4Trees’

And she says she hopes to go on to win so she can help transform Derry and surrounding areas that need some tender loving care through the funds she will be helping to raise as part of her challenge.

World Environmental Day -
Alixandra Halliday - Northern Ireland's Miss Earth 2011 hosted a local clean up, in a disused eye sore area, where people dump anything and everything helping to draw attention on World Environmental Day that this should be a thing of the past in 2012.
