To be honest, out of these 28 finalists I can only pinpoint a handful of deserving entries!!!


So many real "Wonders of Nature" were left behind due to lack of support, but in terms of wonder in beauty, those left out are among the best...


Mt. Fuji of Japan should have been there.
Chocolate Hills of the Philippines is another one.

Rare minerals discovered in Puerto Princesa Underground River

Scientists recently found rare minerals in the Puerto Princesa Underground River (PPUR) in Palawan, according to a report on dzBB radio this Thursday, adding to the site's prestige as a recent addition to the 7 New Wonders of Nature.

According to Puerto Princesa City Mayor Edward Hagedorn, "serrabrancaite" or manganese phosphate is not usually found in regular caves: other than in Palawan, the only other known deposits are in Sierra Branca, Brazil.

Serrabrancaite is formed from the mineralization of "guano" —the droppings of bats and seabirds that make their homes inside caves, according to researchers.

According to Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Ramon J. P. Paje in a separate statement on the agency's website, the deposits in Palawan were confirmed by famous crystallographer Dr. Paolo Forti, a member of the Italian La Venta Geographical Association scientific expedition to the PPUR.

“Cave experts themselves are amazed because only few caves in the world host more than three to four minerals, yet in the PPUR alone, they have unearthed at least 11, of which three are new cave minerals," Paje said.

Aside from serrabrancaite, the expedition also discovered two more new minerals: robertsite and janggunite. Other common but notable minerals found in the cave were calcite, gypsum, apatite, variscite, strengite, manganite, rodocrosite, and pirolusite.

7 New Wonders of Nature

The PPUR received some of the most votes in the recently concluded New 7 Wonders of Nature campaign.

The Philippine government actively campaigned for the PPUR to be included in the prestigious list, with no less than President Benigno Aquino III making a public appeal in June.

The New7Wonders Foundation released the initial results of the Internet and SMS voting this past Saturday. The group said that it will publish the official results in 2012, following a thorough review of the voting results.

Aside from the Palawan Underground River, the list of seven wonders also includes the Amazon, Halong Bay, Iguazu Falls, Jeju Island, Komodo, and Table Mountain. — TJD, GMA News

Where a provisional status is shown, this means the first step of the verification process is still underway. The process of confirming the provisional New7Wonders of Nature results includes the following steps:

1. The validation of the national phone and SMS voting results, after which preliminary CONFIRMED status is granted to the relevant New7Wonder of Nature.

2. The verification of the total worldwide calculation, to be completed once all national phone and SMS voting results are validated, expected during the first quarter of 2012.

3. The preparation and implementation of the Official Inauguration events for each New7Wonder of Nature to be confirmed.

We will update and announce the individual status as each one of the New7Wonders of Nature is confirmed. We will do this on an ongoing basis once the validation, verification and preparation process is complete for each one and overall. At that point each confirmed New7Wonder of Nature will host an Official Inauguration at the location and in the capital city, during which the Official New7Wonders of Nature Plaque will be ceremonially presented as final confirmation of the status as one of the Official New7Wonders of Nature as voted by the people of the world.

Total voting set a new world record for N7W, many hundreds of millions of votes and a multiple of the votes achieved in our first campaign to elect the man-made New 7 Wonders of the World declared in 2007. We will update on the exact number of votes once the confirmation process is fully completed.

Puerto Princesa Underground River is 2nd Official Winner of New7Wonders of Nature Slot

The Puerto Princesa Underground River (PPUR) in Palawan is the second entry to be officially announced as one of the New7Wonders of Nature winners, following Jeju Island of Korea.

No less than New7Wonders (N7WN) President Bernard Weber came here to the Philippines to formally announce the inclusion of Puerto Princesa Underground River (PPUR) in the New7Wonders of Nature, as reported by GMA News on Saturday, January 28, 2012.

After the announcement, Mr. Weber congratulated the Filipino people during the press conference held at the Heritage Hotel in Pasay City.

“When your very own President Aquino came out in support of the PPUR campaign, I knew that this country was taking the New7Wonders of Nature seriously,” he said.

“Fans of PPUR all over the world responded to his call for action by voting in record numbers and today’s confirmation is the well-earned reward for this extraordinary display of enthusiasm,” he added.

Puerto Princesa Mayor Edward Hagedorn, who also graced the event, notably used the new DOT slogan in his speech.

“This confirmation is wonderful news for Puerto Princesa, and a great example of how now its more fun to be in the Philippines. Worldwide exposure of our natural beauty on this level is critical both for tourism and for our image nationally and internationally,” he said.

The Official New7Wonders of Nature Inauguration ceremonies for the Puerto Princesa Underground River will take place in the Philippines at the weekend. A highlight of the event will be the unveiling of the commemorative plaque on Sunday in the island province of Palawan.

What’s next for the Puerto Princesa Underground River (PPUR), now that it is officially one of the New7Wonders of Nature? Well, the next step, according to President Benigno Aquino III, is that Filipinos should move from being its promoters to being its responsible stewards. He made this appeal last night during the Official Inauguration of the PPUR in Manila.

“This honor reminds us of how truly blessed our country is — and of how it is our task as Filipinos not to take these blessings for granted. We have to act as responsible stewards,” he said in remarks reported widely in the Philippines media. This means, “valuing our natural resources and ensuring the environmental sustainability of all our development efforts.”

As well, tourism must be “nurtured and sustained,” with the best way to do it being to take care of sites like PPUR “not in words but most importantly in deeds,” quoted GMA News in a story titled “PNoy stresses responsible stewardship of PPUR“, and continued:

“The president lauded the collective success of Filipinos in making the PPUR one of the world’s wonders of nature. “In the face of tremendous competition — when we got to the finalist round, there were 27 other finalists and millions of other voters from all over the world — we pulled together, and once again put the Philippines on the map,” he said. “I thank everyone who participated in this effort — from those who led the campaign, but most especially, to those who joined us in sending their text and Internet votes,” he added.
