For her upcoming 21st birthday Scherri-Lee Biggs isn’t allowed to drink alcohol, can’t eat cake and will be in “lockdown” inside a hotel. But all these little luxuries have been replaced with a tiara and the title of Miss Universe Australia 2011. So it’s a pretty good trade off if you ask me.

We recently met Scherri-Lee at an intimate event hosted by Nude by Nature, the principal makeup sponsors of the pageant. Yes, she was blonde, tanned, with legs up to here, but she was also very warm, open and easy to talk to.

My impression is exactly how she hopes to come across at the upcoming international competition “I think around the world Australians are regarded pretty highly and that Australians actually wear their heart on their sleeve, they’ve got nothing to hide, they’re out there, they’re energetic, they’re having fun, everyone loves Australians. I mean Jesinta won Miss Congeniality in last year’s international final and I think that says a lot about who Australia is. I’m not saying I’m going to go over there and win Miss Congeniality but I think just generally Australians are open, honest people and I think that that’s something in my personality and I hope I portray that over there”.

Though Scherri-Lee never imagined that this might happen to her she always knew she was destined to do something different “I’ve always thought to myself that whatever I’m going to do it can’t be normal I can’t have a nine to five job it’s just something that I’ve known”.

With the international competition just six weeks away Scherri-Lee is treating being Miss Universe Australia as a full-time job “There’s a lot of preparation taking place. I do my exercise and fitness during the day, you have to keep up to date with current affairs around the world and in Australia. I think it’s just generally about becoming more aware of the world around you”.

So what does the fitness regime of a Miss Universe contestant consist of? Scherri-Lee is an early bird so she generally exercises in the mornings “That’s when I have the most energy and by night time I want to start winding down. If I do exercise at night I kind of want to do pilates or a walk or something.”

For maintaining her inner-health she reveals she’s “Pretty keen on vitamins — I like chlorophyll and spirulina, drinking a lot of water, and different vitamins for my skin.” As for makeup she “likes to keep it quite simple and wear light makeup if I can.”

Scherri-Lee’s beachside upbringing in Perth has influenced her healthy lifestyle approach “I’m a big believer in when you’re stressed going for a walk. When I’m stressed out, I get home and just go for a walk and the salty air calms me. Actually I went to Germany for awhile and it was freezing cold, it was mid-winter and it was quite hard being over there because I was alone as well and I couldn’t wait to get home and from the airport in Perth, even though it is kilometres away, I could smell the salty air and I knew I was home.”

The Beach Bondi transplant from South Africa is taking Miss Universe seriously. She has been scraming for the latest world events and has been working our religiously to keep up with the other sexy babes who are set to compete in Sao Paolo, Brazil.

She wants to win "Biggs" style. She also believes Aussies are known for their gift of gab and personalities. These are Australia's advantage over the other girls.

Q: Scherri-Lee, how excited do you feel to work with Sylvia Lee on your evening gown for the Miss Universe finals?

Scherri-Lee:
So excited! We had such a short meeting together this week. But from what I did get to see, and speaking with Sylvia has impressed me so much!

I hadn’t even begun to think about what I would be wearing at the international final, so when I found out last minute that I would be meeting with Sylvia, I started to wonder what my dress would be like… ‘pleasantly surprised’ is an absolute understatement! Now I cant give to much away but it’s amazing, the perfect combination, elegance with a touch of sexiness. You’ll all have to wait and see!

Sylvia is an amazing designer and I am lucky enough to have the opportunity to work with her. Apart from being wonderfully kind and accommodating, she has a creative flare that works well with my personality… I’m really excited!


Q: Where is your favourite place to eat out?

Scherri-Lee:
In Perth its all about local produce and beautiful locations, Trigg Island Café is the perfect combination of both.
Im a little boring and tend to stick to either the spare ribs or the calamari is to die for.

In Melbourne (so far) my all time favourite is Cumulus Inc. I don’t even know where to begin with the slow roasted lamb and candied walnut salad. Its incredible!

Q: What made you enter the Miss Universe Australia pageant? What do you hope to achieve?

Scherri-Lee:
The pageant presented itself as an opportunity through a friend and of course I knew what the pageant was about, but I hadn’t really
thought of it as something in my future. However once the offer came about, it struck me as an exciting opportunity to do something
different and meet some interesting people. I never imagined winning it and I’m absolutely ecstatic that I have.
Over in Brazil i obviously have some desire to take the big crown haha and I will work my buttocks off for the next 5 weeks to give myself
every chance. But I think something that’s even more important to me, would be to make my country proud. I would like to go to Brazil
and best represent the Australian people to everyone there and for other contestants to go “ahhhh, so that’s what an aussie girl is
like…” haha.
I would also like to act as an ambassador for women. We are lucky enough to live in Australia, where Australian women are held just as
highly as men. Many places in the world still disregard a woman’s worth and this causes many problems for the people as a whole, as well
as the women personally. I feel that education is the key to solving (or at least beginning to solve) the issue and I believe it’s the job of
empowered women such as ourselves to help fix.

Q: What excites and motivates you?

Scherri-Lee:
I think what gets me going, is imagining what could be…
I like to stop and think what life would be like if something were to happen. For example imagining now what it
could possibly be like to be miss universe, living in new york, having all these great experiences and meeting
amazing people from around the world… That gets me excited and helps in all preparation.
A little music doesn’t hurt either

Q: The title of the book you're reading now? (Or last book you read?)

Scherri-Lee:
‘Half the Sky’ by Nicholas Kristof

Q: Who inspires you?

Scherri-Lee:
Great women of the world, that stood for something. Such as Helen Keller or Rosa Parks.
I also love a woman that had a bit of cheek to her. Katherine Hepburn loved to push the boundaries of her
time.
Its these sorts of women that redefined our role in society.

Monday 18th July

Today we filmed with channel 9's Today show at a Sydney location to show the 2nd fitting. I was a nervous wreck but Scherri took it all in her stride and was such a relaxed professional. What a delight! My favourite Miss Universe Australia EVER!

Even some American tourists waited til end of filming to come take pictures with her. I believe they have been officially converted to cheer for Australia now

2nd fittings went well! We're on our way to make minor changes now, and I will be starting on the dresses tomorrow. Still waiting for some silk to arrive so I can cut the patterns out of my gorgeous fabrics.

Poor Scherri had a bit of a flu so please wish her well that she gets well asap!
