Astronomer Parke Kunkle tells NBC news that due to the Earth's changing alignment in the last 3000 years, the sign you are born into now are different than they were long ago. Plus, some astronomers believe there is a 13th Zodiac sign called Ophiuchus, which falls between Scorpio and Sagittarius.

"This is not something that happened today. This has gone on for thousands of years," says Kunkle. "Because of this change of tilt, the Earth is really over here in effect and Sun is in a different constellation than it was 3,000 years ago."

The constellation of Ophiuchus is located near the celestial equator and is typically depicted as a man wrangling a serpent. "Ophiuchus" means "serpent-bearer" in Greek. There are several different characters from Greek mythology that Ophiuchus is thought to represent, including Asclepius the healer, Trojan priest Laocoon, who was killed by sea serpents, and Phorbas, who saved the people of Rhodes from an infestation of serpents.

The sign Ophiuchus can be found in the Sidereal Zodiac, which is used by Jyotish (or Hindu) astrologers. The Sidereal Zodiac's astrological sign dates are similar to the dates listed below, depending on if the Sun is in a constellation or not.

So astrology enthusiasts should be using these dates, which reflect the current alignment of the Sun, Earth and stars.

Capricorn: Jan. 20 - Feb. 16
Aquarius: Feb. 16 - March 11
Pisces: March 11- April 18
Aries: April 18- May 13
Taurus: May 13- June 21
Gemini: June 21- July 20
Cancer: July 20- Aug. 10
Leo: Aug. 10- Sept. 16
Virgo: Sept. 16- Oct. 30
Libra: Oct. 30- Nov. 23
Scorpio: Nov. 23- Nov. 29
Ophiuchus: Nov. 29- Dec. 17
Sagittarius: Dec. 17- Jan. 20

We have to say -- we've always enjoyed being a Libra, it suits our personality very well. So we aren't sure we're ready to be a Virgo. And do you know any Ophiuchuses? (Orphiuchi?)

New Zodiac sign Ophiuchus may change the future of astrologers too

Astronomer Parke Kunkle has set the world of astrology-lovers on a storm claiming in an NBC show that the Earth's position has changed vis-a-vis the Sun in the last 3,000 years when astrological signs were first allocated and there is a new sign called Ophiuchus which dictates the course of many events.

Now many astrologers themselves are out criticizing the new debate on the Net, aware of the fact that the new sign would bring in more complicated calculations to carry out before giving out pre-set computer-based Zodiac predictions.

Kunkle, who is a board member of the Minnesota Planetarium Society, says: "Because of this change of tilt, the Earth is really over here in effect and Sun is in a different constellation than it was 3,000 years ago."

His remarks have set the Internet abuzz with questions over the new sign called Ophiuchus which was not in the old Zodiac system designed by the Babylonian astrology. Though Kunkle himself said he was not a believer in the Zodiac system, the debate over the new sign failed to die on the Twitter or the Facebook.

Taken from the Greek for 'serpent-bearer', the sign is portrayed by a man grasping the snake that is represented by the constellation Serpens. Ophiuchus was one of the 48 constellations proposed by Ptolemy in the second century. It was earlier known as Serpentarius, a Latin word for serpent-bearer.

The new sign will cover those born between Nov. 29 and Dec. 17 while Sagittarius will move into the 13 th position covering from Dec. 17 to Jan. 20. Some traits of those born in the sign of Ophiuchus are said to be honest, intellectual, sexually magnetic, prone to change and of course, jealous. They require special attention to understand, argue the new Zodiac sign believers.

The introduction of new zodiac sign Ophiuchus between Scorpio and Sagittarius has upset many people who take astrology seriously. The Internet is abuzz with new equations and write-ups on celebrities whose signs change dramatically over night, if recognized.

Another fear among the astrology-conscious people is that the insertion of the 13 number in astrology may bring in the doomsday predictions of 2012 nearer to belief.

Others are upset because their Zodiac sign has suddenly changed since they are not ready to switch over to new charts or accept new predictions. Here are the new signs:

However, not everybody is buying the argument. "We've known about this for ages. The constellations don't suggest what's coming up, it's the planets! The constellations are a measuring device," another astrologer Susan Miller told ABC News.

She said over period the original number of 50 constellations were brought down to 18 and later to 12 as they are now. The insertion of a new sign would mean reversal of the entire process, she said. "I'm getting so many tweets. Trying to explain something technical in 140 characters is hard!"

I am not an Astrology geek but adding one zodiac sign is unnecessary for me,, Having those signs were based on the constellations that represents the earth's important elements like Aquarius: Water, Pisces: Water, Taurus: Earth,,,and most of them has a significant meaning and it shows the personality of a person born in those signs,,Adding another sign will confuse people who believed in zodiac signs

But that is your personal view on the topic, right? Remember that Astrology is not just about zodiac signs but a group of systems, traditions, and beliefs which hold that the relative positions of celestial bodies and related details can provide information about human personality, affairs and other "earthly" matters. What if the Earth's position has really changed vis-a-vis the Sun? Do you think it's still a HOAX?

here you can see that there ain't no day where a person can have two zodiac signs.
scorpio starts at nov23 and ends at nov29, so serpentarius starts at nov30.

i was from sagittarius but now i'm scorpio...the shortest sign of all
but i don't know if this is gonna be taken seriously, it all started because astrologycal signs were made without serpentarius, and astronomy has now made a proposition to fix the zodiac.

"When [astrologers] say that the sun is in Pisces, it's really not in Pisces," noted Parke Kunkle, a member of the group's board. Your astrological sign is determined by the position of the sun on the day you were born, so that means everything you thought you knew about your horoscope is wrong.
It turns out that astrology has had issues from its inception. (Aside from the fact that it tries to link personality traits with positions of the stars.) Ancient Babylonians had 13 constellations, but wanted only 12, so threw out Ophuchicus, the snake holder. Libra didn't even enter the picture until the era of Julius Caesar.

According to the Minnesota Planetarium Society, here is where the real signs of the Zodiac should fall. Get ready for your world to change forever.

Aquarius: Feb. 16-March 11.
Pisces: March 11-April 18.

American astrologers are up in arms after a report from the Minnesota Planetarium Society stated that due to the moon's gravitational pull on Earth, the alignment of the stars was pushed by about a month. Since the constellations moved, then, Zodiac signs would be altered.

But leading astrological experts say this won't change things at all. That's because Western astrology strictly adheres to the tropical zodiac, which is fixed to seasons. The sidereal zodiac, observed in the East, is the one affixed to constellations, and is thus the one that would change. The tropical zodiac has been in place since Ptolemy's in the second century.

"Astrology is geocentric," astrologer Jeff Jawer told CNN. "It relates life on Earth to the Earth's environment, and seasons are the most dramatic effect, which is why we use the tropical zodiac."

So don't go removing that Libra tattoo just yet. Unless you prefer being a Virgo now; then you can just disregard the astrological pushback. (via CNN)
