THE MISS UNIVERSE 1982 PAGEANT IS ALSO REMEMBERED FOR THE MYSTERIOUS EXCLUSION OF HEAVY FAVORITE AND ONE OF THE FRONTRUNNERS FOR THE CROWN, MISS SOUTH AFRICA ODETTE OCTAVIA SCROOBY FROM THE FINAL FIVE. SHE TOPPED THE PRELIMINARIES AS WELL AS THE PRELIMINARY SWIMSUIT COMPETITION WITH A WIDE MARGIN OVER MISS USA AND MISS ENGLAND.

DURING THE CORONATION NIGHT, MISS SOUTH AFRICA PLACED 2ND IN THE INTERVIEWS BEHIND MISS GUAM BUT FOR SOME INEXPLICABLE REASON, SHE DROPPED TO 10TH OUT OF 12 SEMI FINALISTS IN THE SWIMSUIT COMPETITION. PAGEANT FANS SPECULATED THAT PERHAPS ONE OF THE JUDGES MIGHT HAVE PUNCHED IN THE WRONG SCORE THUS THE VERY LOW 7.225. REMEMBER, "THE HIGHEST AND THE LOWEST SCORES WILL BE DISCARDED" FORMAT HASN'T BEEN INTRODUCED YET AT THAT TIME..

ODETTE RALLIED IN THE EVENING GOWN GOWN COMPETITION WHICH SHE WON WITH AN 8.707 SCORE BUT IT WAS TOO LATE ...WHEN THE AVERAGE SCORES CAME OUT, SHE NARROWLY LOST THE FIFTH AND FINAL SPOT TO MISS USA WHO EARNED 8.181..SHE SETTLED FOR SIXTH PLACE WITH A HEART BREAKING 8.172...

THE 1982 MISS UNIVERSE EDITION IS ALSO THE YEAR WHEN VENEZUELA REPRESENTED BY ANA TERESA OROPESA MISSED THE FIRST CUT AFTER IRENE SAEZ WON THE 1981 MISS UNIVERSE CROWN. THE FOLLOWING YEAR, VENEZUELA STARTED A REMARKABLE 21 YEAR UNINTERRUPTED SEMIFINAL PLACEMENT STREAK WHICH ENDED IN 2004 WITH THE FAILURE OF MISS VENEZUELA ANA ANEZ TO MAKE THE SEMIFINAL CUT IN ECUADOR.

YES I REMEMBER THIS "MYSTERY" VERY VIVIDLY.

I WONDER WHY SHE DIDN'T DEMAND FOR A VERIFICATION OF HER SWIMSUIT SCORE? THERE WAS REALLY AN OBVIOUS TECHNICAL ERROR THERE. I HOPE NOTHING THIS TRAGIC WILL EVER HAPPEN AGAIN. SUCH A WASTE THAT SHE WASN'T CROWNED MISS UNIVERSE 1982.

miss south africa was definitely way way better than miss canada and miss guam....

imagine topping the presentation show swimsuit competition and overall topnotcher for the presentation show?

during the coronation night, she was 2nd in the interviews and 1st in the gown competition...

how on earth could she place 10th among 12 semi finalists in the swimsuit competition when she was already awarded best in swimsuit during the presentation show?

i believe it was after this incident that the highest and the lowest scores are to be discarded format was implemented to avoid a repetition of such fiasco

i think south africa was robbed, surprisingly. if you topped all the parts of preliminaries, It is confusing if you are the lowest in the swimsuit competition. its not about comparison or something. all girls did their best but 1 small mistake can make the difference!!!
