Past and Present life of Catharina Svensson, Miss Earth 2001.

Fun fact: If you noticed the white long dress of Catharina in the present video, it is actually the dress she wore in the coronation of Miss Earth 2001. Imagine 2 decades of preserving the dress, and the beauty of our queen never fades.

Brazilians actually never complained about her winning the crown over their candidate who is Miss Earth Air that year. Brazil was very respectful to the organization and sent higher caliber candidates until they got their first and that is why Brazil became a favorite of Miss Earth. They even got 2 crowns and a lot of elemental crowns.
If everyone can be a beauty queen, what is hardwork?
Maybe there is no hardwork, only surgeries ?

If Lindsey Coffey redefined what a Miss Earth is in it's 20th year, Catharina Svenson defined the classic Miss Earth, a true and unassuming woman of substance .

Love her line, Being Miss Earth is not just a one year reign, it's a job for a lifetime.

Miss Earth : NEWS
November4, 2001 "Miss Earth 2001 Interview byGerry Diaz"

Catharina Svenssonis a natural beauty whohardly wore any make-up and almost always had her long, blonde hair just flowing naturally. Her eyes had a downward droop that makes her look sad so I advised her to always smile. I also told her that she looked good with her make up in the publicity photos that her agent sent to Carousel Productions. I added that she would look good with eye shadow that is drawn upward to the end of her eyebrow to offset the droop in her eyes.

Image
MissEarth 2001 Catharina Svensson from Denmark personifies the refreshing, sweet and all-natural beauty gifted with intelligence and sensitivity. Indeed a very fitting MissEarth.

Going into the finals, I saw how she slowly blossomed, especially in the Evening Gown Competition that prompted Boyet Blas, our official photographer who is simply beyond compare, to feature her solo picture resplendant in her evening gown a few days before the finals. But her unassuming ways, with which she always chose to stay in the sidelines did not make her a serious contender for the most part of the pageant. While she was inmost of the Top 10 Lists she was hardly billed as the Girl Most Likely. Few suspected that she’d unleash her intelligence and the powerful magic she had with words during the finals.

Miss Earth 2001 winners pose for a souvenir shot with Michael Herrmann, General Manager of Hotel Intercon, the residence hotel of the Miss Earth candidates. From left :Miss Kazakhstan Margarita Kravtsova, 2nd runner-up; Miss Brazil Simone Regis1st runner-up; Michael Herrmann, Miss Denmark, Catherina Svensson, Miss Earth 2001 and Miss Argentina Daniel Estucan,3rd runner-up.

I was fortunate to catch her during a break in the photo shoot with Michael Herrmann, the General Manager of Hotel Intercon. Get a closer glimpse of Catherine Svensson, Miss Earth 2001 in the first interview to be published after her victory.

GD – You were not one of the top favorites to win the crown. How did you feel when you were declared the winner?

CS – I did not expect to win but I was very happy.

GD – You said you didn’t expect to win. What then were your expectations during the finals?

CS – Top 10.

GD – When you did well in the semifinals with your views on the preservation of nature and the air that we breathe, did you think then that you could make the Top 4?

CS – Honestly, no. I had no time to think about that. Everyone was just so busy and running around, there just wasn’t time to do that.

GD – I was among those shouting “Denmark” during the finals before the announcement of the winners. I was with the entire Mabuhay Staff and we joined the audience in rooting for you. Did you hear the cheers of the audience?

CS – Oh, yes. Thank you very much.

GD – I noticed that, unlike most beauty winners, you did not cry when you were announced the winner. You were just so cool.

CS – Gerry, maybe it’s because I am not the type of person who easily cries.

GD – Who was the first person you advised about your victory?

CS – My boyfriend. He was very happy, he was shouting for joy and was jumping up and down all over the room. (I got the impression that their bond is so strong, her email ID is a combination of her nickname and that of her boyfriend.)

GD – How about your family?

CS – I called them next. Of course, they were all very happy.

GD – I heard that a Danish newspaper called you very early to get more news about your victory.

CS – Yes, at 5:00 a.m. Just as I was starting to get some sleep.

GD – I also learned that this Danish newspaper got a telegram about your win as Miss Earth.

CS – I don’t know where that came from.

GD – This is the first time that Denmark won an international beauty title since 1981when they won Miss Europe. (Denmark also won Miss Maja International in 1966 and Miss Young International 1973 which Pia Fris Jenssen won in Manila)

CS – (She looked a little surprised upon learning this. Because of her age, she was not familiar with these beauty queens). But if I may point out, this is the first time that Denmark has won a major international pageant.

GD – So when are you going back to Denmark? I’m sure you’ll get a rousing welcome.

CS – A newspaper publication interviewed my brother and he told me that there will be a lot of press people who will meet me at the airport.

GD – Did you knowt hat you were Miss USA’s choice for Miss Earth?

CS – (She lets out a big, sweet smile, her face lights up and her eyes glow.) Really. That’s very nice to hear. Thank you.

GD – Why do you think she chose you? By the way, Miss USA has been a spokesmodel in the US on matters affecting the environment.

CS – We talked a lot and I think she knew that we were both knowledgeable and deeply involved with various environmental concerns. I don’t know if you know much about Denmark but…

GD – Oh yes, I know that European countries, especially Scandinavian nations including Denmark have a very high level of environmental consciousness.

CS – That’s true. In our country, everyone is conscious about all these things – garbage disposal, recycling, protecting the forests and preserving ecological balance. In school, we are taught all these things so everyone practices all these principles in our daily lives. Every year we even have five “carless days” where motor vehicles are not allowed to be driven.

GD – What do you think is Denmark’s most pressing environmental problem?

CS – We are a farming country and a lot of the insecticides which are being used seep through the soil and into our water sources. Our government has come up with a long-range plan up to the year 2030 to address the various problems affecting our environment. There is also another program that aims to reduce the amount of insecticides that go into our agricultural lands by 2005.

GD – Earlier, I mentioned that Miss USA you as the candidate most likely to be chosen Miss Earth. I don’t recall who you voted for during the survey we conducted in Venezia.

CS – Miss India.

GD – She was my top bet too, unfortunately, she didn’t do well in her assessment of the environmental photos during the semi-finals. I think thatmade her miss the Top 4.

CS – Yeah, too bad. When I heard her answer, I felt that way, too.

GD – (What Catharina said was very revealing.)

CS – I commiserate with Miss India. She had to contend with a lot of pressure back home. Of course, you know that last year’s Femina Miss India winners all won their international contests – Miss Universe,Miss World and Miss Asia Pacific. (Shamita was picked from that year’s batch of semi-finalists to represent India in Miss Earth.) Everyday, she was in the papers in India and there was just too much pressure on her to win.

Miss Estonia had to deal with the same problem. With her experience in Miss Universe and Mesoamerica International, pageant fans had high expectations of her and that put some strong pressure on her as well.

GD – Have you joined other beauty contests before?

CS – No. This is actually my first “contest”, if you can call it that. There was no formal contest for Miss Earth Denmark.

GD – So you were chosen by your agent.

CS – I was chosen by another agent, not my agent. He went around the different modeling agents to scout for Denmark’s candidate to Miss Earth. I was lucky, he chose me. (Now, I say, he was lucky too that he chose her.)

GD – How do you think your countrymen will take your victory as the first Miss Earth.

CS – I’m not too sure about that. Beauty contests are not a big thing in my country. But maybe, after my victory, that might change.

It was a wonderful experience getting to know Catharina Svensson, an all-natural, refreshing beauty with unassuming ways who is gifted with intelligence and sensitivity. The Miss Earth organization is fortunate to have a winner whom they can count on to become a most effective spokesmodel for the environmental platforms that Miss Earth has aimed to pursue.

CONGRATULATIONS, CATHARINA ! WE AREVERY PROUD OF YOU !!!

MISS EARTH 2001: ARTICLES, TRIVIAS, and NEWS

CATHARINA: The Danish Who Conquered The Earth(Analysis, Insights, and Notes on the Miss Earth 2001 CoronationNight)

by Kyle T
from : missearth2001.tripod.com

CatharinaSvensson, a 21-year old Law Student from Denmark, outsmarted the competition as she came from behind the favorites tocapture the first-ever title of Miss Earth at glittering ceremoniesheld Sunday night at the University of the Philippines Theatre inDiliman, Quezon City. In the process, she bested 41 otherdelegates, including three front-runners who were eventually namedinto her unique court of "elements": Brazil'sSimone Regis - who was named Miss Earth-Air, Kazakhstan's MargaritaKravstova - Miss Earth-Water, and Argentina's Daniella Stucan - MissEarth-Fire. The 5'11" Svensson likewise eclipsedother heavily-favored contestants from India,Estonia, and the Philippines who only got as far as the Top10.

Going into the semifinals, itappeared to be a long shot for Miss Denmarkas she only held on to the personal interviews as the strongest partof her preliminary score tally. But as fate would have it, sheturned the tide to her favor when she impressed the judges not onlywith her wit and spontaneity, but with more than respectable showingsin the swimsuit and long gown portions as well. When she wascalled in the Top 10 - alongside Misses USA,Argentina, India, Estonia, Latvia, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Philippines, and Brazil - the audience hardly cheered for her. Assoon as the interpretation of environmental photographs was conducted, though, she gradually took command of an awe-inspired crowd who tooknotice of her brainy answers. As the semifinal phase ofcompetition was winding up, it became crystal clear that she hassecured one of four finals slot. ShamitaSingha of India, an early stand-out, looked like anothershoo-in. Having won two special awards earlier in the evening -on top of getting the National Costume and MabuhayPageants Miss Internet nods - she was poised to take her gainsfurther up the ladder of victory. However, her swimsuitscore must have been a letdown. On the other hand, MissesArgentina and Kazakhstan sustained their strong leads and were almostseeded to reach the Top 4, just like Miss Brazil who did a pretty goodjob in all her semifinal outings.

Topfour : Miss Argentina, Miss Kazakhstan , Miss Brazil, MissDenmark

The Final Q&A was an entirelydifferent story. Only one question was asked with an isolationbooth serving the purpose of preserving the confidentiality of thissegment. It is here where fluency in English was deemedessential. Although as it is, Kazakhstan,Brazil, and Argentina - who have fundamental grasps of themedium (read: they can very well get the gist of an English questionby just hearing bits and pieces of familiar words in the same) - couldhave maximized their use of an interpreter by taking advantage ofprecious seconds to compose their answers while translations werebeing made. These ladies, however, must have really found thequestion tough. Argentina hardly gave the correctresponse as she simply went through a short litany of how the earthmust be taken cared of. Kazakhstanunderstood the question, but wanting to intersperse English with hernative language, the clarity of her answer was nowhere to be found. She even spent close to one full minute in explaining her side. Fortunately for Brazil, shebenefitted a lot from a charming Portuguese-speaking translator whowas able to piece together her rejoinders in a fluid manner. With Denmark, shecapitalized on her excellent communication skills and gave out a mostsensible reply on how to put a balance between technologicaladvancements and environment protection. She even went as far asdetailing the farming practices in her home country and how thegovernment was able to come up with effective methods to improve ontheir rural technology without harming nature's elements. At this point, everyone inside the theatre was in unison that shenailed the crown with her reply. She was already being lustilycheered upon, with those who used to support Argentina and India nowshouting of Catharina's looming victory.

During the announcement of winners, theonly results being awaited for were the placements of Argentina,Kazakhstan, and Brazil. Denmark clearly had it in thebag. And what a sweet triumph it was for a lady who came toManila with no intentions of winning but to just enjoy the wholeexperience of her first visit to Asia and participate in a beautypageant with a cause.

Topten : Miss USA, Miss Argentina, Miss Denmark, Miss Kazakhstan,Miss Brazil, Miss Philippines, Miss Bolivia, Miss Latvia, MissIndia, Miss Estonia

Pageant notes:
1. At least two of CarouselProductions' bigwigs were teary-eyed in joy upon discovering that asimple unassuming but brainy lass (with no airs or attitude problemsat all) won over the more well-prepared delegates and highly-toutedfavorites. For them, Denmark's winning could be a signal ofbrighter things to come for Miss Earth.

2. MissKazakhstan was not too happy with her third-place finish. Even the production crew of Carousel was rooting for her. However, when all the picture-takings, congratulatory kisses andhandshakes were taking place, Margarita regained her usual warm andaffable self and displayed true sportsmanship by sincerely huggingCatharina and the two other finalists.

3. MissIndia was visibly sad of not making it to the Top 4. During the final part where all the contestants were onstage towitness the victory of Catharina, she stood behind the taller MissNew Zealand to shield her disappointment.

4. After Catharina was promptlywhisked away by security and brought to her victory party, Simone,Daniella, and Margarita were still left onstage as theywere being adulated upon by countless supporters who were asking forphoto ops and autographs from the three. Semifinalist EvelynMikomagi was also with them as she had her share of fans aswell.

SpecialAwards : Miss Lux - Miss India , Miss Cream Silk - MissArgentina, Miss Close up - Miss Philippines, Miss Ponds - MissEstonia

5. A relatively strongBrazilian contingent was in the audience was present insupport of Simone. One of them was even wildly waving the flagof Brazil up to the final announcement.

6. Right after the pageant, MissRussia, Victoria Bonya, stepped in front of pressphotographers and stole the limelight from the winners by posing whilegarbed in an attire that looks like the replica of the verycontroversial low-cut see-through dress JenniferLopez wore during last year's Grammy Awards when she wasstill seeing Puff Daddy. Victoria made the whole get-up moreinfamous this time by wearing a blue swimsuit panty which was sovisibly displayed.

7. MissesAustralia, South Africa, and Canada gamely posed with someof the audience members for souvenir photographs while wearing theirelegant evening gowns.

8. It was noticeable duringthe evening gown semi-finals that MissEstonia wore a long pastel-colored dress different fromwhat she paraded during the preliminaries. She must have thoughtthat the white gown did not create an impact among the judges at theMandaluyong Gym.

9. Among the candidates with whomMabuhay Pageants did an informal survey as to who they feel deservesto win Miss Earth, only Miss USA, Abby Royce, correctly picked Miss Denmark asthe girl who will bag the title. Must be a case of intelligentminds thinking alike? Well, we really should have asked Miss Denmarkat that time. I'm not sure if she will pick Miss USA as herchoice in return.

10. For the first time in mypageant-following years since 1974, I actually got a high 90% in mysemifinal predictions. Of the 10 ladies I posted in this boardas my final Top 10, 9 girls actually made it. Only MissLatvia, my #11, was not on the list.

11. I don't like the Miss Earthcrown. It made the wearer look like an alien with the skeletonof a space helmet that did not pass quality control. The tiaras ofMisses Air, Water & Fire are far more attractive, although thedesigns can still be improved.

Production Notes:

1. The stage design wasobviously done on a shoestring budget - no fancy stuff. With adrawn backdrop of trees amidst a forest-like scenery, realgreeneries were transported to the theatre and laid over thispainting. It actually gave the audience an initial feel of awoods-like setting with laser lights providing the minor spectacleevery so often. The problem was that some of the greens emitteda somewhat foul smell after being enclosed inside the venue. This must be one of the main reasons why their turned down theair-conditioning. I also noticed that, except for the openingnumber showing Chin-chin Gutierrezrising from a mechanical contraption beneath the centerstage, no othermoving portions were utilized. All in all, it was a back to thebasics motif.

2. Among the three hosts, Miss Asia-Pacific 1997Emma Suwanalat is the most seasoned in terms of pageantexperience and it showed in the way she projected, read her cue cards, and delivered her spiels. She has been an anchorperson of theMiss Asia-Pacific for the past two years. On the other hand, AshaGill may have been a VJ for a long time now, but the MissEarth being a formal event, she was kind of ill at ease, especiallythat she had to wear tight-fitting long gowns and high heels. However, she was very good at throwing punch lines for comic reliefduring the long breaks in the live taping of the show. The maleemcee, Jaime Garchitorena, did adecent job. He had his share of slips and buckles here and there, butnothing too huge a blunder to make a big deal of. At any rate,he committed a major boo-boo during taping which, fortunately, wasalready edited out and no longer shown to the TV audience. Iwill not go into full details of this incident anymore so as not todampen his chances of pursuing a career as pageant host. Heapologized to the theatre crowd for the same and I forgive him.

3. Thankfully, the choreographyexecuted by Robbie Carmona was notcomplex. This allowed the ladies to master their moves within two daysand nights of continuous rehearsals.

4. The live taping of thepageant inside the UP Theatre was excruciatingly long. Itactually started at half past 7pm and ended with the announcement ofwinners close to midnight. I was told by friends who watched onTV that the RPN-9 coverage began at around 9:30pm already, with somany commercials filling in the lulls that were actually caused by acouple of retakes in the live taping, aside from unforeseen delayscoming from video clips (which sandwiched the commercial gaps) whichkept on running amuck.

5. Due to the length of thetaping, Jaime Garchitorena and Asha Gill were instructed to fill inthe loooonnng gaps by entertaining the live audience. At first, theirbanters were fun and amusing. At one point, though, their jokesbordered on subject matters a little too risque' for some of thepeople inside the theatre, especially the children. When the twocajoled Emma Suwanalat for being so quiet, the latter smiled andtactfully quipped that she won't be part of their verbal exchanges. Therafter, they played it safe with wholesomehumor.

6. Asha Gill was so uncomfortablewith her black gown (worn during the first part of the show) that sheactually stepped so hard on one of the long heavily-beaded tusslesthat it got pulled out in place. She quickly apologized todesigner Frederick Peralta for what she just did. At least, shewas able to carry her 2nd gown (a reddish pink spaghetti-strappednumber with a large overlaying shawl covering 3/4 of her body) withaplomb.

Well, so much about all thesenotes and insights about the recently concluded Miss Earth 2001Finals. All I can say is that CatharinaSvensson is truly deserving of the title. Denmarkshould be proud of her. Considering that this country has not beenactively participating in beauty pageants lately, this victory shouldpropel them back to the mainstream from hereon. If not, theFilipinos would be very happy accomodating another Danish candidate innext year's Miss Earth.

MissEarth 2001 Catharina Svensson of Denmark is the first Miss Earth victorand the first Danish to hold a Big Four beauty pageant title. Before her triumph, Denmark was able to gain four first runners-up in other BigFour beauty pageants. Lilian Madsen was declared as Miss World 1957 first runner-up. Aino Korva was able to achieve the first runner-up title in Miss Universe 1963 while Pia Rosenberg Larsen single-handedly managed to arrive at the first runner-up position in both Miss International and Miss World 1986 pageants correspondingly. She remains the first and the only Danish to obtain a semi-finalist spot and went onto reap the first Miss Earth title. Catharina Svensson was never considered by the pageant enthusiasts as a favorite during Miss Earth 2001 pageant. The preferred competitors during the entire competition were Miss Brazil Simone Regis, Miss Kazakhstan Margarita Kravtsova, whowas awarded as Best in Swimsuit, and Miss Argentina Daniela Stucan, whowas named as this year’s Miss Photogenic. It was Catharina Svensson’s mind-blowing reply to the final question sealed her destiny in the Miss Earth 2001 pageant.

MissEarth 2001 Catharina Svensson of Denmark is the first Miss Earth winnerand the first Danish to win a Big Four beauty pageant title. Before herwin, Denmark had produced four first runners-up in other Big Four beauty pageants. Lilian Madsen was named as Miss World 1957 first runner-up. Aino Korva was able to place first runner-up in Miss Universe1963 while Pia Rosenberg Larsen single-handedly managed to reach the first runner-up position in both Miss International and Miss World 1986 pageants respectively.

My Opinion:
She looks like a real royalprincess living in a royal palace. She also looks like Paris Hilton in some angles. She deserved to become the first winner of Miss Earth.

Throwback Thursday: Memories of the Very First Miss Earth

by Norman of normannorman.com

I have quite a number of fond memories about Miss Earth 2001. I remembercovering the first edition of the environmental beauty search for Mabuhay Pageants, visiting the ladies at Hotel Intercontinental Manila – their official residence, interviewing my favorites during a pre-pageant activity at Manila Polo Club, watching the (relatively crude-ishly staged) Preliminaries held at the then Mandaluyong City Gymnasium and witnessing the live coronation at UP Theatre.

I remember Misses Argentina Daniela Stucan and Miss Kazakhstan Margarita Kravstsova being the most fiercely-competitive among the 42 candidates and hoping to high heavens that they would nail the crown. Connected to that, I remember sitting down for a one-on-one with the latter who was starting to act up like a stilted presence, but eventually showed a more civil attitude.

MissEarth India 2001 Shamita Singha (2nd from right) was one of the candidates I bonded with that year. (Photo credit: Boyet Blas for Mabuhay Pageants)

I remember the very warm and friendly Miss India Shamita Singha who had the right amount of confidence to figure out well in the finals. Shemade Top 10, but was disappointed when she no longer advanced to the Final 4.

MissEarth Philippines Carlene Aguilar during the ME2001 Press Presentation at the Hotel Intercontinental Manila

I remember the mother of Miss Philippines Carlene Aguilar who always reserved the loudest cheers for her daughter.

I remember the non-English speaking but very gracious and beautiful Miss Bolivia Catherine Villarroel who profusely thanked me when I complimented on how “muy lindo!” she is.

I remember the kooky but happy-to-be-with Evelyn Mikomagi of Estonia who was very happy when she was named to the Top 10.

I remember Miss USA Abby Royce who, upon learning that I was constantly hunting her down for a quick interview, gave me the most profound environment-laced answers that would put any Miss Earth wannabeto shame.

But more than anyone else, I remember the statuesque, no-nonsense andcordial Catharina Svensson, the equestrienne, model and law student from Copenhagen who was named the very first Miss Earth. She was one of the earliest arrivals, had a very commanding presence and gave simple but sensible answers to any question thrown at her. Actually, she was only running to be one of the elemental court members. But when she answered the final Q&A, there was no question that the judges had found the most deserving inaugural winner of the competition.

Oh, I really do have so many positive thoughts about Miss Earth 2001. :-)

MABUHAY SEPTEMBER DINNER WITH MISS EARTH 2001 CATHARINA SVENSSON: A MEMORABLE IN TERMEZZO
- 9.17.2002

INTRO …

One of Danishdirector Lars Von Trier’s most well-known films is “Dancer in the Dark”. The film is about a Czech immigrant to Americanamed Selma (played by eccentric Icelandic singer Björk) who lovedHollywood musicals and dreamed about them to escape the escalating grimrealities of her life. How grim? Imagine this: her eyesight isdiminishing, and her son has the same condition, too; she worked in afactory to save money for an operation to save her son’s eyesight; hermoney was stolen; she was then in a situation that led her to be falselyaccused of murder; and she was found guilty of the crime and was given thedeath sentence. Von Trier filmed the musical dream sequences inbright, vivid colors, while Selma’s reality was shown in drab, muted ones. For me, September 17, 2002 was very much like that film. It was avery stressful day at work that day. As the working day drew to aclose, I was definitely drained and I needed some relief.

THE INTERLUDEBEGINS…

Fortunately, there was a Mabuhay dinner scheduled thatnight. I always look forward to our monthly meetings, as I am in thecompany of friends with whom I shared similar passions and interests, andwho appreciated the gifts that I can offer. I was expecting more ofthe same good vibes this particular evening, but I was surprised at howthe evening actually turned out. Our dinner for this month was held at Banana Leaf at the 2nd floor in the newly-openedupmarket mall in the Ortigas commercial area called The Podium, at 6:30 PM. Our featured special guest was Miss Earth 2001Catharina Svensson, whoarrived in Manila last Sunday. I was the first to arrive in thevenue at around 6:20 PM and decided to do some window-shopping at the fivelevels of the mall. While window-shopping, I had the pleasure of seeing amale TV celebrity happily cavorting around with his girlfriend whileclimbing the escalator (clue: he’s a very close friend of a recentlydeparted teen idol). At around 6:40 PM, Gerry sent me a text message thathe’s already at Banana Leaf, so I proceeded to our meeting place. There was Gerry and Catharina seated at an elevated area of therestaurant. Catharina looked slimmer than the last time I saw her,and she now exudes an aura of a casually elegant model with her airy whiteblouse and black slacks, sporting crystal-and-silver jewelry from Danishjeweler Dryberg Kern (how to pronounce this name, see below). Catharina greeted me with a buss on the cheek. While we waited for theothers to arrive, we ordered some drinks and appetizers. Gerry had a mangoshake and ordered roti & curry as appetizer for the three of us,Catharina had a pineapple shake, while I had a nata de coco / pineappledrink (turns out to be a milky parfait). Catharina mentioned thatearlier in the day she visited the compound of the broadcaster of thisyear’s Miss Earth pageant, ABS-CBN. She mentioned the greatfacilities and wonderful commissary there. I concurred with her, asI visited that place last year as a contestant on Kris Aquino’s game show “Game Ka Na Ba” (it was the episode aired on Christmas Day last year – Iwasn’t fast enough to buzz in the correct answer to make the final two). The evening percolated when the other guests to our dinner arrived: KyleT., Boyet Blas, and three guests of Gerry’s – a very close personal friendof his and two banker friends. Another Mabuhay staffer was expectedto arrive – Joey Guilas – but he went the wrong branch (in Greenbelt,Makati) and only caught up with us when we had dessert and coffee atUCC. He was also supposed to be bringing some camera crew from RPN-9in order to conduct a TV interview with Catharina, but because of themisunderstanding, that plan had to be rescheduled. Anyway, lively, enlightening conversation ensued as dinner began to be served. Let me giveyou a picture of how the evening went.

CHICKEN, RICE,AND OTHER DELIGHTS…

The Philippinesis a country where the best selling menu item in its top hamburger fastfood joints is… a fried chicken and rice meal. So, it’s quiteexpected that many of the guests in our dinner ordered chicken and rice. However, some of us decided to consume meals that aren’t chicken – I hadthis meaty, filling “turnip” dish, Kyle had spicy noodles, Boyet orderedsome Indonesian beef sate (somewhat like barbecue, but dipped in peanutsauce) and another rich dish, and Catharina had shrimp. Gerry’spersonal friend, unaware of Catharina’s “famous” remarks on “fried chicken andrice”, offered to sharesome of his fried chicken to her. Catharina very politely declinedhis offer. Of course, we in Mabuhay Beauties had to tackle that remark andgood-naturedly teased her about it. Catharina took all our needlingin stride and nicely explained that it’s a case of “too-much-of-a-good-thing” – when the host offers you the same “best” foodevery day, it’s inevitable that you get tired of eating that “best” foodand want to try something else. Everyone at the dinner ate heartily, including Catharina. As is typical Filipino custom, we usuallyencourage our guests to eat some more. Though Kyle is a bitconscious about the food he eats, he encourages Catharina to eat morebecause “well, you’re already Miss Earth, and you don’t need to worryabout your figure anymore. Leave the worrying to thecontestants.” Well, Catharina doesn’t seem to be that consciousabout the food she eats or her figure that much, she just eats until shegets her fill (which is the right and healthy attitude towards eating, anyway). After the sumptuous dinner at Banana Leaf, what did we have fordessert? Well, first, Kyle and Gerry’s three guests have departed bythe time we moved on to UCC. Catharina and Boyet ordered apple pie ala mode, which Catharina had with café au lait while Boyet had anespresso. Gerry had UCC’s famous mango coffee shake while I ordereda kiwi shake. As my kiwi shake was delivered, Catharina looked at itcuriously, because it’s odd-looking since it’s a bright green juice – ofcourse she had to ask me what is that thing. I told her what thedrink was, explained to her that I loved kiwi, which was why I decided togive this juice a try. I accompanied my kiwi juice with this talland nutty fruit parfait – which I realized that I should have mixed it up,as I loved my cold desserts to be consistently cold all over, and thisparfait has a cold ice cream on top and the other contents are not ascold. It was still delicious, though. Though the Mabuhaystaffers split the bill on t he main course at Banana Leaf, somebodypicked up the tab for our coffee and dessert at UCC, and for that we arevery grateful. Who picked up our dessert tab? Find out in thesection entitled “THE MONZONS, THE PICTORIAL SESSIONS, AND JOEY GUILAS”.

REMINISCINGMISS EARTH 2001…

It’sinevitable when you converse with a beauty queen that you reminisce aboutthe pageant that gave her the victory. So, we simply can’t help buttalk about the friends she made during that pageant (India, USA, NewZealand), how we all loved Miss Kenya, Aqua Bonsu (a graciously humblelady who fared much better than she thought she did), the chants of “Misuzu” for Miss Japan – who won Miss Friendship in the contest, theimpish MissNetherlands (sheactually loved the country enough to come back here and join a Boracay bikinicontest), and about how Miss India, ShamitaSingha, still kept intouch with some of the Mabuhay staff and might have plans to come over andvisit our country again (plus Catharina mentioned that Shamita wasreported to also have traveled to England for some modelingassignments). Boyet also noted how the US delegate, Abby Royce, rubbed some of our local journaliststhe wrong way, especially being particular about the photo angles to beshot on her. Knowing that Abby has been good to us (I actuallyinterviewed her after the Miss Earth press presentation, and shegraciously answered my questions), and that she answered the question “whodo you think will be Miss Earth?” when Gerry asked her the question incontrast to the frosty response she gave to a journalist who asked thesame question, we guessed that it might be because Abby doesn’t trustanyone too easily, and that she’s choosy on whom she trusts. I guessthat’s the most plausible case as I know of people who are like that – including someone in my office whom my heart holds dear. We also dished onthe girls who were homesick during the pageant: Mz. Kazakhstan, Finland, and probablyJapan (since she couldnot speak much English) and their contrasting behaviors – how Misuzu(Japan) remained sweet and adorable, Margarita (Kazakhstan) stayedwell-behaved and did her best under the circumstances, and Martina(Finland)… uh, well, Ed Saludes mentioned how she behaved in passing whenwe reported on the new Miss Finland – Earth, Elina Hurve, on our messageboard a couple of months ago. Then, there was also that incident when I made my national costumepresentation review, how Miss Dominican Republic was so miffed that Imisinterpreted her “labandera Dominicana” (Dominican flag) remark as “lavandera Dominicana” (Dominican laundrywoman,as I understood it). Boyet explained to me that the Spanish term forlaundrywoman is actually “lavadera” (without an “n”), but when we borrowedthe term in our own native language, we added an “n”, hence themisunderstanding. Anyway, we issued a prompt apology to assuagebruised feelings at that time. Of course, we also couldn’t help buttalk about the girls who misbehaved – like how some Spanish-speakingcontestants taught one hapless non-Spanish contestant an obscene word, andhow some contestants loved to hustle for screen time. Those “badgirls” shall remain nameless…

PAGEANTQ&A

Ididn’t prepare many questions for an interview with Catharina, as: a) Ihad no time because of the extreme pressures I was encountering at work;and b) with the great interview at Global Beauties, plus Kyle’s greatquestions, the only questions that I’d really like to ask are updates onher life, responses on a few rumors, and maybe a few Miss U-type pageantquestions. Moreover, many of the questions I’d like to ask have beenraised by Gerry and Kyle in the course of our conversations, so all I’vedecided to do for the night is soak everything in… Actually, while waitingfor Kyle and the others to arrive, I did ask Catharina about two thingsthat were mentioned in the Global Beauties interview: the environmentalsummit in South Africa, and the Miss Earth - Denmark pageant. Forthe former, the plan for Catharina to attend the summit didn’t pushthrough. For the latter, they weren’t able to get enough sponsors for thisyear to stage a televised contest, so the new Miss Earth - Denmark wasselected through a similar casting process Catharina went through. The sponsors, having made their marketing plans for the year and werestill reeling from the effects of 9-11, had to decline for now. Butthere is hope that a televised Miss Earth - Denmark pageant will pushthrough next year. Some trolls in the pageant message boards havecirculated a rumor that Catharina is three months pregnant. Well, seeing her in person definitely dispelled those rumors immediately – she’sdefinitely far from being pregnant. Gerry mentioned the rumor toher, and she reacted with bemusement and, of course, denied therumor. This rumor triggered us to pepper her with “pageant-y” questions and issues that affect other international pageants, such as: “Do you think a titleholder should be allowed to be pregnant during herreign?” Catharina first noted that it is explicitly stated in the terms ofher Miss Earth contract that she is not allowed to become pregnant. But in the hypothetical scenario that there was no explicit clauseregarding that, it would depend on the timing and the responsibilitiesthat the titleholder has. For instance, if it happened early in herreign, it would be difficult for a titleholder to attend to herresponsibilities when she’s already approaching labor; if it happenedduring the last three months of her reign, the titleholder can probably beallowed to keep her crown as the early trimester of a pregnancy would notreally be in the way of a titleholder’s duties. “If you were a contestantin this year’s Miss World pageant in Nigeria, would you boycott thepageant because of the Amina Lawal controversy?” Catharina said yes without batting an eyelash, becausethe death sentence on Amina Lawal is inhuman and barbaric. “Why is Earth called ‘Mother’?” Thisquestion was the final question asked in this year’s Miss Earth – Philippines pageant. None of the Miss Philippines finalists was ableto answer it as fluidly as Catharina: “Man needs his mother because the mother is the onewho provides for you and takes care of you. In the same way, Earthis called ‘Mother’ because it provides for us and takes care of us.” It only has to be as simple as that… “What makes you blush?” This question actually floored Catharina, and shecommented: “Goodquestion…” Catharina gave a revealing answer: “When I speak in front of alot of people, I sometimes couldn’t breathe…” How revealing was that answer? Read in thenext section entitled “REVELATIONS” Anyway, only two people e-mailed uswith additional questions they would like to ask Catharina, one sent toKyle’s e-mail, and one sent to mine. Kyle’s e-mail sender was theequivalent of a prank caller, as his question was an absurd “How areyou?” I had a more “serious” e-mail sender by the name of Rheinald JoelBiscaro, who sent mefour questions. Two of his questions relate to comparing thispageant with other pageants, which I think Catharina is not in a positionto answer, so I decided not to ask them. One question, I think, wasactually tackled and covered by one of Kyle’s questions, so I decided notto ask that one myself anymore. Now, here is the last, “personal” question by Rheinald: “What do you think is the ideal diet to maintain a perfect figureand still get the right nutrients needed for properhealth?” Catharina responded that she thinks she’s not the best person to answerthat question, as she eats anything she chooses. So we forwarded thequestion instead to Boyet, who over the past few months slimmed down tonormal weight: “thediabetic diet, with no sugar.”

REVELATIONS...

After the “Whatmakes you blush?” question, Catharina revealed to us that last year’s MissEarth pageant was the very first time she had to speak in front of a lotof people. That surprised us, because her fluid and confidentdelivery during the pageant belied that fact (and that fear) – she soundedlike someone who already had experience in public speaking. I haveto say I admired her more when she revealed that, because she took whatcould have been an obstacle and turned it into an opportunity to grow – her victory was probably a testament that she had hurdled theobstacle. Moreover, she thought that it would also be useful to herwhen she becomes a lawyer, as a lawyer would inevitably have to face andspeak to a lot of people at some point in his or her career. Anotherinteresting tidbit about Catharina is about her heritage. Though shewas born and raised in Denmark throughout her life, her father is actuallySwedish. The way her name was spelled was likewise reflective of herSwedish background, as Swedes spell the name Catharina, while typicalDanes will use the name “Katrine”.

ANYTHINGDANISH…

When talking to avisitor from another country like Catharina, conversation inevitably turnsto how life is like in that country. Here are some lesser-knowntidbits we got about her country: Denmark has about 5 million people living in about 43,000 sq. km (the landarea I gathered from encyclopedia research). Contrast that to the 12million people living in the approximately 200 sq. km land area of MetroManila… Favorite food of the modern Danes these days is Italianpasta. Shows how the free exchange brought about by the EuropeanUnion is in full effect. Another impact brought about by theEuropean Union is free mobility to any other country in the union. For instance, there are a lot of Danes who now go home to nearby Swedenand troop to Copenhagen for work because they want to avail of the lowertax rates in Sweden. On a more personal note, Catharina mentioned afriend of hers who lives in Sweden whom she could easily visit as thefriend lives only 45 minutes away from Copenhagen. Danish movies now imitate the Dogma 95 style initiated by famous director Larsvon Trier – shaky camera movements, natural light, etc. Of course, we alsotalk about those pastries that we call Danish. Boyet mentioned howhe had attempted to make his own Danish in the kitchen, and we allmentioned about the ubiquitous, sugary Danish Cookies that are easilyfound in our local supermarkets. We complimented Catharina on the jewelryshe was wearing that night – the cross necklace, the metal bracelet, andthe watch. We asked her the name of the jeweler, and we had a hardtime pronouncing it that we asked her to write it down on mynotebook. It is spelled: DRYBERG KERN. However, to pronounceit is tricky. First, the “Y” sound is pronounced like “ee” in “free”, but you have to round your lips, as if making the “oo” sound in “moon”. Germans usually spell this sound as “ü”, but in Scandinavianlanguages like Swedish and Danish, this sound is spelled with a “y”. Now, the “ER” sound is not how we would typically pronounce it. The “e” tends to sound like “a” in “an” (and I will approximate it by spellingit as “ae”), and the “r” is not that prominently pronounced – you canstill hear the sound, but you shouldn’t pronounce it that much. Soit was with great difficulty that I had to attempt to pronounce the name,to the laughter of my Mabuhay comrades. So, try to rep eat after me: Drü-bae(r)g Kae(r)n.

THE MONZONS,THE PICTORIALS, AND JOEY GUILAS

Asthe main dinner drew to a close, the heads of Carousel Productions (producers of the Miss Earth pageant) Ramon Monzon and LorraineSchuck-Monzon came overto visit us and check on how the evening was progressing. We greetedeach other warmly and they seemed to be happy with how it’s turningout. They would proceed to UCC after dinner and we would meet themthere. After Gerry paid the bill at Banana Leaf, Gerry & Boyet, andone of Gerry’s banker friends, conducted a pictorial with Catharina atPacific Blooms before taking coffee. Gerry knew the owner of theflower shop, and secured her permission. The striking results of thatpictorial session are seen in this website. Kyle and I marveled at thewonderful, European-style décor at Pacific Blooms. And we both shared thesame reaction: “Mom would love this place!” In my Mom’s case, addseveral statues of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Jesus Christ, and varioussaints, and you get my Mom’s dreamhouse. Kyle and Gerry’s three guests hadto go after the pictorial session was over. Gerry & Boyet took a fewshots at the nearby lamp shop with Catharina before we finally proceededwith dessert and coffee at UCC. Lorraine and Ramon had some guestswith them – including a congressman who is spearheading some environmentalprograms, and so Catharina joined them for a little while. WhileCatharina conversed with the Monzons’ guests, Boyet, Gerry, and I accountfor our shares in the Banana Leaf meal. Then, Joey Guilas finallyarrived. Since the RPN 9 crew wasn’t with him, he decided to conducthis interview with Catharina in behalf of Men’s Zone magazineinstead. After Catharina was through conversing with the Monzons’ group and returned to our table, Joey proceeded with his interview. As always, Catharina responded fluidly and still had enough energy for it.At around 11 PM, the wonderful evening had come to an end. We badeLorraine and Ramon goodbye and we learned from the UCC waitress that theyalso paid for our coffee and desserts. We felt so grateful for thatgesture. Of course we also bid Catharina goodbye, as she also hadsome other meetings to attend to with Carousel Productions the followingmorning (I think it’s a visit to Unilever Philippines, if I’m notmistaken). Catharina bussed all of us on the cheek as we all wentour separate ways.

CODA…

The evening hadall the elements of a perfect dinner party – great food, wonderfulcompany, lively and stimulating conversation, and of course a few comedyof errors (like my mangling the word “Dryberg Kern” and Joey Guilas’ssituation). Definitely an affair to remember. In many ways, it isvery much like a musical interlude in “Dancer In The Dark”, down to therich wash of colors provided by the visit to Pacific Blooms. Butunlike the musical interludes in that film, this interlude happened inreality. Because it happened in reality, I am optimistic that I won’tsuffer Selma’s grim fate in that film, even as I faced a deluge ofmagazines to edit in the coming days (and is a factor why this essay tookthis long to write). And, unlike Selma, I definitely haven’t “seenit all” (NOTE: “I Have Seen It All” is a song from this film that wasnominated for an Oscar – yes, this was the one where Björk wore hernotorious “swan” dress). I definitely want more of these in my life.
