In the past decade, semi-finalists and winners have been selected without a "selective criteria" at the final night, but subjectively considering other factors, as compared to its counter part Miss Universe. The only semi-finalist selections clearly seen are the ones from the extinct "fast-tracks" winners. With this format, there has been a debate. Critics argue there is no real competition on the final night and viewers are clueless on how a top 16 is reduced down to top 5 or 3. At the same time, others have said competition starts from day one, and judges and Mrs. Morley watch the girls' attitude in the different events. It is said to look for a beauty beyond the physical. Under this old format, small and non-powerhouses countries had equal chances to get noticed like Martinique, Sierra Leone, Kazakhstan, American Virgin Islands,Grenada, Ghana, and many others to name a few.
Now we see a new format implemented last year. This new format is cumulative, which means fast-tracks winners no longer have straight pass to the top on the final nights, and other girls placed in the fast-tracks will accumulate points towards the final night. For some people, this new format will create more competition and excitement to the pageant without sacrificing what Miss World is looking "Beauty With A Purpose." We'll see if this year will keep this format, and what other changes will be implemented for the selection process like the Media Fast-track. Based on these changes we can still say about the unpredictability for the crown, and how countries will adapt to these changes for their girls.
Another factor I consider is host location. The times when China has hosted the pageant has created controversy about the outcome of the semi-finalists. Let me be clear about this. All pageants play politics and interests, but with China as host it has become more evident in some occasions in Miss World. This year we will see what political and interest factors will play in Ordos.
Furthermore, I must say I have observed UK dependant countries and territories have been favored in Miss World. Countries like Scotland, Wales, Northen Ireland, Gibraltar have topped in Miss World in the last decade, although not a must.
We will wait when the competition starts and see how it develops to predict the winner. The competition this year is really high, even the pretty and cute ones are on high levels. In Miss World, all girls are beautiful enough to win the crown (in theory)
THE WINNER WILL BE A SURPRISE AGAIN...
