I have watched Miss Universe and Miss World, since I can remember and in addition to that, often watch the videos of all past editions of all GS pageants, Gathering all information therein obtained, I would like to present some facts, trends and observations, which not only gives us a clearer picture of what it takes to win, or be a serious contender for the most prestigious title in the planet. I will focus only in the Miss Universe Pageant.
Notes. Not all the winners that I will list are necessary my personal favorites, but each and everyone of them had the qualities and the essence of a MU winner.
Disclaimer. This is not a beauty list, nor all of them the most beautiful, but a select group who really had the magical essence of being MU on coronation night.
Some notable winners of yesteryear.
In the 50's
1953 Christiane Martel., France
Essence of a Winner; overall beauty and sex appeal, beaming smile, poster girl vibe.
Perhaps for most of us that year (1953),appears so far away, that seems almost unimaginable, but judging for her undeniable beauty, small waist, superbly contoured legs and a well proportioned body, which was sheer perfection for the 50's, she looked just like a big screen actress of those years, as well as the perfect pin up girl. Many still consider her as one of the top 20 most beautiful MU of all time and I would have to agree with that!
1959 Akiko Kojima, Japan.
Winning Essence; Coy sweet personality, outstanding vital statistics, uniqueness, glamour.
According to my research, many were surprised to see Japan win, because, as we all know, MU is an American (USA) organization and furthermore, the standard of beauty in those years, was Caucasian (white) girls, with pretty faces and short blond hair. But, Miss Japan, captured their hearts, with her unassuming and coy elegance and grace and the vital statistics of 37–23–38 inches (94–58–96 cm), which many believed as "incredible dimensions", particularly, for an Asian.
In the 60's
1967 'Sylvia Hitchcock, USA.
Essence of a winner; great personal style, elegance and charm
Socialites from two nations clashed. .
With an incredible curvaceous-fit, figure, for the times, and not the traditional, blue-green eyed blond girl, from the USA, this brown eyed brunette, from a well to do American family, from Alabama, USA, won another title (4th by the time), for her country. She had tough competition from Venezuela's own, Mariela Perez Branger, also from one rather affluent family, in Caracas, Venezuela.Mariela, Miss Venezuela, was the favorite of the judges and according to my research, both women were neck and neck in all competitions and considered highly fashionable and elegant. At the end and to the surprise of many, Miss Venezuela lost to Miss USA, by 0.10 of a point!
In the 70's
1974, Amparo Muñoz, Spain
Winning essence; doll like face, unparalleled freshness, unassuming charm, natural beauty, photogenic quality
This presentation, could not be complete without Amparo Muñoz, not only because of her recent passing, on February 27/11, but also due to the fact that she was and will always be considered by many ( myself included) one of the most beautiful MU winners of all times. Her beauty was , so fresh, natural and angelic, to the point that she looked barely her age (She was 20 when she was crowned MU). To add to all her attributes, her naiveness was absolutely charming, when in the Q&A portion of the competition, she did not understand the question and laughed, pretty much her way through it!.. It was very evident that this unassuming quality, really won over the judges, in spite that that year was one of the strongest top 5 in history, where Miss Wales, Helen Morgan, the eventual first r. u, later on became MW.. Thus, for all these qualities, her being so vulnerable and so very "real", she will live in the memories and the hearts of many ..
The first African descend Woman is crowned MU.
1977, Janelle Commissiong, Trinidad & Tobago.
Essence of a winner; unassuming beauty, delicate facial features and striking bone structure, serene confidence.
With one of the most amazing faces of any African descend (black) in history, Miss T&T was a mega favorite, right from the beginning.Furthermore, her poised and calm demeanor during the televised interview portion, gave no other choice to all the judges, but to crown her as the first African American in history to win the Miss Universe title. Her win, was and is unprecedented in view of all the global discrimination against racial minorities (particularly, black) of those years and opened doors for other black women to cinch more relevant positions and titles in MU and MW.
In the 80's
Thailand wins its second MU title.
1988 Porntip Nakhirunkanok, Thailand
Winning essence; Incredible magnetism, commanding stage presence and charisma.
This was also a historic year in MU in that out of the 5 finalists, 4 were Asian. Hong Kong, Japan, Thailand and Korea. Many have attributed that high ratio of Asians in the top 5, to the fact that MU was held in Taipei Taiwan. But Miss Thailand, was also the clear winner; when she came on stage her aura was unmatched and so was her speaking ability and account of her involvement in charities for women in her country.
In the 90's
1996 Alicia Machado, Venezuela
Winning essence; flirtatious and bubbly personality, interview prowess, superb fashion sense, unparalleled catwalk; overall beauty and appeal (face-hair-body).
In 1996 came a one of a kind young woman, who took the MU stage by a storm to become one of the most unforgettable trademarks of what being" fierce" is all about ( which is attitude, strong confidence and skill) . She had that and more!. When she came onstage during the Swimming suit competition, she would toss her hair, so energetically that at one point one of her earrings came off. Many have tried , thereafter to duplicate her style, but nobody has been able to get even close. No wonder, Machado won and swept in all 3 portions of the competition; Q&A, swimming suit and evening gown. As if that had not been enough, she also won the sward for "Best Personal Style".
The New Millennium.
2000 Lara Dutta, India
Essence of a winner; confidence at its best, outstanding spokeswoman, unforgettable and serene aura. Strong magnetism.
At the the turn of the new millennium, on its first decade, a shining star from India left her well planted footprints in Miss Universe and pageantry in general.. Not only did she win the SS portion of the competition, in spite of some really serious competition, again from Venezuela, a more statuesque delegate, Claudia Moreno, who had also won " Best Body" in her national, Miss Venezuela pageant. At the end, Miss Moreno edged Miss India in EG, but the decisive factor was when Lara Dutta, Miss India took the microphone in her hand, during the interview.. Her outstanding eloquence, confidence were really unparalleled. In my opinion her final answer is perhaps the best of all times!
2002 Oxana Fedorova- Russia (Dethroned)
2002 Justine Pasek- Panama (Successor)
Iconic Russian stunner becomes MU, then is ousted. First runner up, from panama becomes Miss Universe!;
Winning essence of Miss Russia; sheer facial beauty and overall exceptional beauty.
Winning essence of Miss Panama; simplicity, natural beauty, sweet and calm demeanor..
I could not pass up this year, in which one of the most celebrated beauties of all times in MU, effortlessly bagged the crown. With lustrous straight- black hair, feline green-blue eyes and a face of 1 million dollars, Oxana Fedorova, of Russia obtained the highest SS scores in the history of MU, with an unprecedented 9.88. During EG, she even managed to , once again finish in first place, with a score of 9.64, in spite of wearing a rather plain, non well fitted EG, cinched at the bust, which hid her figure. Even her answer during the Q&A portion was short, simple and even predictable, so it was obvious that the judges had already made up their mind that she was the winner, right from the start of the final night!
Unfortunately, only a few months after her win, the MUO dethroned her, supposedly for not efficiently fulfilling her responsibilities. That gave a chance for Justine Pasek to give Panama its very first MU title.
2006 Zuleyka Rivera, Puerto Rico.
Winning essence of Miss Puerto Rico; exoticism, catwalk diva, original evening gown, sexiness and stage presence.
This was another very memorable year for MU, in that Zuleyka Rivera, Miss Puerto Rico, was practically unbeatable that night. Many favored the highly intelligent and sassy beauty from Japan, Kurara Chibana, for her overall fresh and natural appeal, but Miss Puerto Rico's performance in all 3 segments of the competition , was phenomenal!.. During the SS portion her catwalk was both sexy and sophisticated, her movements graceful and mildly flirtatious. Moreover, her body was so lean and well defined!. Later , in the EG competition, she wowed everyone with a one of a kind gown, created in gold chains, which fitted her body like a tight glove. The effect was magical and mesmerizing!. All eyes were on her more than ever and in my opinion, this was the most decisive factor for her well deserved win.
2008, Dayana Mendoza, Venezuela
Winning essence; exoticism, Cat walk diva, fun personality, overall appeal ( beautiful eyes, hair, beaming smile),
Another young woman who revolutionized MU and pageants for ever, is Dayana Mendoza an ex Elite Management model, who from the beginning of her arrival in Vietnam, caused an uproar, being the # 1 favorite of the press and locals and thus, acing the first competition, as " Best in Ao Dai"., the traditional Vietnamese attire, prior to the finals.
However, on coronation night, it was long legged Taliana Vargas, from Colombia, who was ahead of Miss Venezuela, in both the SS and EG competition, with scores of 9.433 and 9.829, while Venezuela's scores were, 9.327 in SS and 9.697. At the end, the nerves got the best of Miss Colombia during the Q&A segment, while Miss Venezuela delivered a very unique and fun- thought provoking answer to her question. This was the decisive factor that made the judges bestow the title, to Miss Venezuela, instead to Colombia.
2009, Stefania Fernandez, Venezuela
Evolution. Progress. Transformation. Growth.
Essence of the winner; fine (delicate) facial features, dimples, statuesque, top model appeal, long neck, curvaceous body, long legs, confidence, sheer elegance, personal style and fashion choices.
Unequivocally, the best evolution and growth of a Miss Universe in modern times, Stefania Fernandez, is a true icon of elegance, hard work and of growth before criticism. Her favoritism in the Bahamas was lukewarm; Some pageant followers had her amongst their favorites and many did not. The clear favorites that year were Ada de La Cruz, from the Dominican Republic and Rachel Finch of Australia. However, it was Marigona Dragusha, Miss Kosovo, who managed to impress just about everyone, during her unforgettable performance and styling in the preliminaries, with her high bun hair style and monochromatic purple-blue EG. On the other hand, Miss Venezuela, who also sported a high bun hairstyle during the preliminaries, was loved by many ( myself included) and heavily disliked by most, perhaps because the effect of her fashion style and choices were too much; high bun hairstyle, huge earrings and a feathery red gown with beaded shimmering details in the bustier. Nevertheless, it was on finals when Stefania Fernandez, Miss Venezuela wowed the judges , when she came out wearing the same dress, but with her hair down, and cuffed to one side of her face and neck and with her signature red lips, which many have tried to imitate thereafter.Coming in 4th and 5th, during the SS and EG segments with scores of 8.760 and 8.869 respectively. Nonetheless, during the Q&A portion, she gave a very direct and confident answer (a bit over confident, perhaps), which convinced the judges that she was the winner.
In summary, the essence of a great and worthy MU winner, is all those individual qualities that wow and mesmerize us, such us beauty, personality, charisma, personal style, but most importantly, the sum of all those elements and the " magic" that made the judges realize that she was indeed the most special and the brightest star of the universe of their given year and in my opinion, the ladies I listed here, all had it.
