SA govt denies support to Lalela Mswane

Postby Jaishee » Sun Nov 14, 2021 3:51 pm

As soon as MUO announced the location of this year’s competition back in July, I knew this would be coming for at least one of the contestants & national organizations.

And then someone asks me why I was completely against the decision to hold it in Israel. It is a controversial location, a lot of countries don’t even have relations with it, and what is happening to Miss SA @lalela_mswane now was absolutely inevitable.

The day after Lalela won Miss SA, Nelson Mandela’s grandson called upon fellow South Africans to help him force Lalela to withdraw from Miss Universe. Ever since then, they have started a movement called “Not my Miss South Africa” on social media, constantly insulting and degrading this young woman because of MUO’s money motivated controversial decisions. I just feel like the hate should NOT BE DIRECTED TO HER.

While each of her fellow 80ish contestants is enjoying her preparations road to Miss Universe, Lalela’s sponsors are pulling out, there are protests in front of Miss SA offices and now, even the South African Department of Arts, Culture and Sports released a statement saying the government had withdrawn its support - and as a result, that of the country - for her to compete in the global competition set to take place in Israel in December.

I did not want to post much on this polarizing issue before and was only replying to questions of my followers about it in dms, but I just felt the need to now. I understand both sides, but this young woman is taking all the bullets instead of MUO, and I feel like she does not deserve it. I don’t even know what else to say..I hope Lalela can make the right decision, sending all the love to her and hoping MUO provides support to her in case of withdrawal that she can compete next year.

People are so bored to be honest. They couldn't think in MORE IMPORTANT THINGS and leave a girl with her dream?? Really I don't understand this HIPOCRESY. They are bullying a girl because the wants to follow her dream. It's so frustrating to be honest. Poor Lalela.

Is the government funding the Miss South Africa Organization, or private sponsors? If the govt is not funding the pageant, they have NO business interfering with the affairs of a private company. And the government does NOT represent the entire Rainbow Nation!

If the SA gov't support is withdrawn, I trust they will allow Lalela to use her passport on her own volition. But how else would she be able to obtain a visa to enter Israel and which country is she going to obtain the entry stamp from in order to travel? If no such diplomatic relations exist between the two countries, will Lalela be allowed to obtain an Israeli entry visa and travel from another country, i.e. Namibia or Botswana? If gov't support is unavailable, so are other functional instrumentalities that would hinder Lalela from leaving and coming back to her homeland after the competition is over with. If trade / commercial relations exist between the two countries, can the SA authorities issue her with an entry document (not necessarily a visa?) to visit Israel? The caveat:- she won't be travelling for the purpose of trade or legitimate business but as a beauty contestant.

Of the 80ish or so countries participating, a similar situation could arise where no prior state diplomatic or trade relations with the State of Israel has been established or sanctioned, whichever the case. How many, we have no clue.

Since no Israeli Embassy operates in SA, does the state of South Africa host an Israeli trade office of some sort -- in Pretoria or might be in Cape Town or Johannesburg? May that be doable? Travelling to Israel through the auspices of an Israeli trade office? (Similar to the Philippines relationship with Taiwan, although formally the Phil government adheres to the one-China policy but maintaining a state-sanctioned trade office in Taipeh.) But there will be complications, and that is almost assured!

What kind of support has the SA government traditionally provided that it should become a big deal, anyway? Does the Miss SA org not have basic resources of its own that its winner can’t proceed with her activities without this supposedly oh-so-critical government support?

Support was traditionally provided by the SA state authorities to travel to other non-Semitic countries but not perhaps granted to travel and enter Jewish Israel. That is where the caveat begins to tell.

As pageant fans we want her to compete at all cost but not to the detriment of her safety and her org’s.

Other than losing sponsors who provide the financial support, her org runs the risk of getting dissolved by popular demand and I’m afraid the protests will escalate further if she goes to Israel. Not worth the risk IMO.

It's so funny to think that beauty pageant organizations are not funded by their government but by private entities. I don't think that the government of South Africa will have bearings on her candidacy to Israel, The Land of Milk and Honey. The government of South Africa doesn't feed her then why they are meddling with someone who worked hard to bring prestige and pride to their country. And what kind of support your talking about her that she would be denied of by her government. You didn't specify. Financial support? Ha Ha Ha Ha. It's a big joke.

All of them don't receive any government support but wait till they bring home the crown. Their government will be head over heels to see them first at the airport before anybody in their respective country.

Precisely, if the government of South Africa cannot fund her, there's no reason to meddle her candidacy. Her Organization can prepare and groom her to Miss Universe Competition. They've been doing that for so many years now and their Organization is considered Super Power in Beauty Pageantries as to what they have achieved overtime.

Gov't support should not be incorrectly misconstrued to be the granting of financial assistance or fiscal incentives. It's nothing like that in the case of the Philippines. On the other hand, "support" could be measured through the provision or presence of instrumentalities such visa services, security, logistics, health or transport. No government funds should be allotted to mundane matters like a beauty pageant. A simple congratulatory remark from the country's leadership should suffice.

How come Taiwan was able to host in 1988 with so many nations attendees and yet they are a tiny nation, considered a province with mainland China by many countries of the World, The Universe rather. Although, they are not fully recognized as a sovereign nation but they can find a way to host and send delegation to any international affairs.

To answer your question:-

Taiwan is not Jewish nor anti Jewish where a possible boycott by anti semitic Moslem sentiments can spell the difference. Understand from that angle otherwise readers will again accuse you of hijacking this thread and rebranding your handle with unpalatable sounding names.

I will tell you extensively what I know about The Country Israel, The Land of Milk and Honey since ancient times. The Country Israel has been a country since 5,000 years ago so as Egypt and Iraq. It's so obvious and even a newborn infant would know that because they can be Jewish, Muslim or Christian and be baptized, they would know. Most importantly, why you are always spreading Black Propaganda against me. If I have swayed your opinion but there must be something that warrants me to pull your legs. It's not intended but to bring you to the correct facts. On the other hand, Israel is fully recognized Sovereign Nation so there should be no complications to enter the country. In fact, The Citizens of The Philippines needed no visa. Filipinos can enter Israel just with their own passport and can stay there for at least a month. You see how good Israel to international community. They can host and send candidates to any Affairs in The World, rather The Universe. For that, People of the World, the Universe rather Love Israel. The country itself and its citizens are peace loving and its a secure country with no civil war that has been experienced within their country. They only get trouble when being threatened by their neighboring country enemy who is not even a full Sovereign Country. Even Israel gave them the Gaza Strip because they were too rebellious and ended up as a breakaway of Israel. But Gaza Strip is now considered The Third most densely populated place in the World and is catching up to be the first because they over populated the area. That being said, Israel cannot give them more land because they are war freak. Remember Munich Olympics in 1972 where they came into scene and massacred several Israeli athletes, coaches and other delegations in broad day light for people of the World, the Universe to witness. And so there's no reason to get scared when in Israel. Israeli people are peace loving, God fearing, hard working and whatever they have, they are ready to share it with you.

When one competes in an international pageant like this the girl is representing NOT just herself but her country. So if your country and people do not approve of your participation then what's the point? It will now become just a fulfillment of a girl's dream and not anymore about representation of one's culture and nation. True enough it is not about the girl but then she is AND should be a representative of her country/people then she should recognize and abide by the sentiments of the majority, after all this is not just about a girl's dream anymore. Miss SA should withdraw if not given the support and blessing of her fellow countrymen.
[-X [-X [-X

How could you be a great ambassadress when you don't even recognize the sentiments of your own country and people? It defeats the purpose.

Everyone is MISSING THE POINT here. The word "support" here does not necessarily mean financial help or funding of their candidate. It has a deeper connotation and meaning. It's all about "relationship" between SA and Israel. What the SA government and the S-Africans are saying is that THEY DO NOT APPROVE of Miss SA participating in the pageant. It's like honouring the wishes of your country and people.

But The Miss South Africa Org is sending a candidate not the SA government. They are a separate entity. Just like MUPH and The Philippine government so as MUSA and the White House. Why is South Africa government meddling with Miss South Africa Org? If South Africa government has a problematic relation to the government of Israel, but the Miss Israel Universe Org and Miss South Africa Universe Org aren't. In fact, each nation enjoys sending candidates year after year to Miss Universe and they don't care about what's happening to their government. What matters them the most is who is intelligent, confident, sexy, beautiful, elegant, regal etc. Just like in the Olympics, the players won't give any damn attention to the administration or government of their competitors. They are there to be powerful in physique with their own game so they get their own medal for the pride and prestige of their country. This boils down too with other sporting events such as NBA, NFL, SuperBowl, MBL etc. They're are not going to meddle with any governmental affairs because they have their own game to play and win about. It's none of their business. They have their own business to take care.

Both sides have good points. But Israel successfully hosted Eurovision 2019.

MGI 2019 was held in Venezuela but lots of countries decided to withdraw (from 75 to 60) because of security problems yet the pageant was "successful", the only downside was the food issues and lacked activities. But MGI org. apparently paid the price of hosting the pageant in Venezuela because the following editions they still fell below 70 candidates.

They have a point that if South Africa wanted to boycott the Miss Universe pageant because of the alleged bad treatment of Palestinians aka "apartheid style", why they did not concern about China over the alleged treatment from some minority groups?

Why some South Africans are supporting Palestinians right now despite we saw some of Hamas militants committed suicide bombings against Israeli people several times in the past?

I think some of South African netizens are joining the bandwagon to protest the exclusion of Natasha in the Top 21 at 69th Miss Universe last May and some of them are pushing to cancel 70th Miss Universe in Israel in order to extend Andrea Meza's reign as Miss Universe?

There's no Apartheid Style with Palestinian. They are too rebellious and wanted to breakaway from Israel with them being a war freak over the years. They thought that they can stand alone as a nation but until now they couldn't lay the very foundation to become a full sovereign nation. Palestinian needs at least sound infrastructure in Gaza Strip and other territories, provide good education and healthcare delivery system to each of their citizens to become a country fully recognized by the world, the universe rather.
