Downfall of Miss Universe

Postby sephie » Sun Mar 07, 2021 12:00 pm

I think the management of Miss Universe can be at fault for its decline

IMG/Endeavor/MUO Good Points
- Good job on repositioning the purpose of MUO (it has attracted quality women who stand up for something)
- Increased the number of countries participating (introduction of countries such as Iraq, etc)
- Focus on Coronation vs PrePageant activities

IMG/Endeavor/MUO Bad Points
- Declined quality of production of the show (just copy Miss France)
- Mismanagement of winners (they werent able to maximize Catriona and Demi IMO)
- Uncertainty of schedule and location
- Poor quality of national directors (for me this is a chicken and egg situation but honestly Philippines, Colombia, etc)

I think it all boils down to the LACK OF TRANSPARENCY in choosing the winners.

Remember during Trump's time? When they eliminated the televised scores in 2003, they thought it would be good for the show. But then, the regular viewers started to get disconnected with the pageant and TV ratings were going down. For that reason, they brought the televised scores back in 2007 to 2010. Somehow, the people had started to return their trust to the system and we had a bunch of new generation of fans who somehow understand how the judging works.

However, from 2011 onwards, we haven't seen the televised scores anymore. And that's also the time when the Philippines started to dominate the Miss Universe system. So people now start to think that it's more of a popularity show. Everyone is beautiful, so it's not really all about beauty anymore. It's about who can keep the ratings up by balancing all factors involved - beauty, body, brains, and also the social media clout, degree of fanaticism of the country represented etc...

SO if you were to ask, how did a certain delegate enter the Top 10 after the speech? You wouldn't be able to explain it with numbers. How in the world did someone manage to enter the Top 5 after the swimsuit and evening gown? Who the hell knows from among us, pageant fans?

When you run a pageant system that is becoming a different entity from what it was originally known for - Miss Universe being a show with much entertainment and transparent system of competition - then we can only expect one thing... its DOWNFALL!
You are entitled to my own opinion.

The pageant loss all the glamour and camp factor. Now is just a bunch of condescending uppity girls pretending to care about feminist and been fake activist. The death of Miss Universe is honestly so sad. The female judges thing is also insulting to fans. Is not a beauty pageant any more, miss Universe has turn into Miss America.

And if I may add... the organization tried so hard to please the feminist and liberal groups, to the point that they have TOTALLY ignored the fact that their fan base in the US are mostly from conservative states, in particular the Southern States! If they believe that trying to reach out to the anti-pageant people would bring in more crowd, they're definitely wrong! Such wrong move had turned off a lot of their original fans, while at the same time, the liberals whom they are trying to please still remain unsupportive to pageantry.

All of your observations are valid. While IMG gave us beautiful and intellectual winners, fans are still questioning how on earth some WTF candidates managed to enter the Top 20. The high end glamour head shot was also missed.

Telecast scores can provided transparency but also provided spoilers/lack of excitement in the age of social media. Before there is no cellphones, Facebook, Twitter, etc., so the scores can be shown on television.

I dont get the Top 20 speech before advancing to Top 10. Its a headscratcher. I feel like its actually Top 10 the other girls were just fillers. It couldn't be just the speech that made them enter Top 10. It's too shallow. Some girls gave bad speech and still entered Top 10

There shouldn't be speeches, its not an Extemporaneous competitions. Its a Beauty Pageant. There should only be swimsuit, evening gown and q&a. Advocacy topic should not be there too because they sounds to be political. They are not running for a public office.

Re: Downfall of Miss Universe

Postby The Duchess » Mon Mar 08, 2021 8:18 pm

The reality is that Miss Universe lost its identity and doesn't really know what it is anymore, it's unpredictable in a bad way and it seems every year they are trialing and erroring. Miss World may be boring to some but it has a distinct identity, Miss International may be a pageant I don't know well yet I know it's brand and identity. Miss Earth and Miss Grand have very distinct brands that do not change but every year build on top of its own foundation. Miss Supra as well.

To me it just reads as if Miss Universe is not trying to be unique but trying to appease a base they will never have while neglecting the one they do have. Successful intelligent women have been participating and winning for years, they are not exactly reinventing the wheel.

For the first time in my 12 years following pageant, I'm barely covering or following Miss Universe which is incredibly sad but given everything ive been hearing seems to be correct theres nothing really exciting for me in this year's edition ect for a couple candidates

We need to get back the same format just like in the 80s and 90s even to get Bob Barker again as a host for several years. The format from those years were the best and no complaints were noted about the quality of the competition so far in that era.

It has lost it's Glam and entertainment Value. Last year's production and set of winner were by far the worse and boring. yes they can speak but what about Lara, Sushmita, Brooke Lee?

We need a Victoria Secret Fashion Show kind of Pageant and Only Mis Universe can do it.

Give the girls the chance to showcase their catwalk like Miss Universe 2005, 2006. Scrap the advocacy stuff, Miss Universe already has one. Stick with it.

Get the best Top 10 or Top 15 in any continent. Show the real time scores. Mix up the judges.

Bring back Miss Universe in 90's format.

Due to economic recession worldwide,
i think the org is dependent to the country who can host the pageant.

If you are capable to host the pageant, you get the crown after a year or so.

or you get first the crown provided that you will host the pageant later on.

Regardless if your candidate is not that beautiful compared to the rest. :-&

In short, its all about moneyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy... :-j

I dont know, i may be wrong, this is just my opinion.

But Bob Barker is 97 years old now, retired from hosting. Yes he is the best host for Miss USA and Miss Universe from 1967 to 1987, then after him, no host came closer even Steve Harvey can't duplicate his achievements.

Despite you are saying about Miss Universe downfall, why some of the pageant veterans are still wanted to compete at Miss Universe, like supposed candidate from Paraguay Miss Supranational 2015 Stephania Stegman?

Endorse that issue to GABRIELA and other women's group. They are more capable to handle that department for so long now. Miss Universe is a beauty pageant. If your shows are for Games, Evangelical or Musical variety such as American Idol etc, even war comes in the world, they can't produce or make shows for military. They'll have to stick showing Musicals or Games as long as they are allowed. If MUO will ask for Philippines to Host Miss Universe, I don't think President Duterte or any President for that matter will agree to it despite the fact that Miss Universe Organization will get involved in Women's Politics. MUO has already pushed the envelope outside of their scope. Miss Universe is only limited to Glitz and Glamour for Entertainment purposes which is all about women because it is called Miss in the title of their show. In addition, if your show is Sports like Golf, Basketball or Football, you can't proclaim any political ideology in the Court or Play field. They won't let you play.

The #MeToo effect caused these changes in the pageant.

People don’t give a f**k the pageant anymore,

Wrong company owned MUO,

Pageant season’s activity, the winner’s reign, production, format, everything is horrible,

And it’s pandemic. People are dying and pageant is not a thing anymore.

What's the point of joining a pageant these days when you can become famous on social media? Do you think that girls will find pageants empowering when you can be yourself and use your own platform without competing and being judged? The whole idea of it is stale and a thing of the past. Women being judged for their physical attributes does not sit well with the times today.

Not to mention, from 2018 onwards, IMG started changing things up, putting useless speeches that hardcore fans don't care about. There is no energy in Miss Universe these days, IMG made it so boring. Miss Universe became a speech competition.

Hija, are you ok?

Do you think that girls will find pageants empowering when you can be yourself and use your own platform without competing and being judged? The whole idea of it is stale and a thing of the past. Women being judged for their physical attributes does not sit well with the times today.

Not to mention, from 2018 onwards, IMG started changing things up, putting useless speeches that hardcore fans don't care about. There is no energy in Miss Universe these days, IMG made it so boring. Miss Universe became a speech competition.

They've changed the concept of Miss Universe Competition about Glitz and Glamour of Women for Entertainment purposes which people have already embraced and accepted over the years. And now, the next thing we'll know, it will turn into a Debate Competition from Third World Contestants. It's so Third World already after they added Advocacy serving Humanity as a front that never fully fulfilled in the judging process. Besides, its not suppose the scope of MUO to do that.

You can have women empowerment AND glamour AND beauty, IMG just cares to bring in a public they will never have because that public doesn't care for pageantry.

And I actually don't want women like Madison, Stephanie, Nicole ect in this pageant any more or atleast until IMG era is over

not to ruffle your feathers but what you're all complaining about is what you wanted the organization to do. My guess is, somewhere down the road, you'll complain again. We were all kicking and screaming "change the platform, show people it's more than just a pageant, change the format, women empowerment, add glam". They did all that and more!!!! Look, they influenced just about every single national organization around the world to make drastic changes to their own national pageants and obscure countries have really benefited from it. I think that's a win. On top of that, those countries are now starting to really elevate the game. For instance, the Philippines raised the bar so high in the last decade or so (whether you like to admit it or not) that even heavyweights like Venezuela and Colombia and Puerto Rico are now reassessing their strategy. Being beautiful and being Latina is just not enough in this day and age. I think that's what the Miss Universe organization really opened up. If you wanna win, don't be Femina India or you'll be left behind!!!! Poor Lara Dutta is still griping.

Come on, some of you are now wanting Bob fu*%^ing Barker back and all of a sudden, you want the old format back? It doesn't make any sense. Like everything else in life, it has to evolve to survive. It's exciting and I'm certain you'll still tune in. Give it a rest!
