The Bigotry and Messiah Complex of Miriam Quiambao

Postby poker_man » Sun Jun 14, 2020 12:08 pm

Miriam Quiambao was one of the most favorite Pinay beauty queens because she almost won the Miss Universe crown in 1999. Also, the funny thing was, she was originally set to compete in Miss World 1999, the original girl sent to represent Philippines Miss Universe (Janelle Bautista) was dethroned due to citizenship issues.

Miriam Quiambao was originally crowned as Bb. Pilipinas World 1999.

She also had one of the most memorable journeys in the pageant. During the preliminaries, she tripped, but her graceful recovery was much talked about, that it did help in creating buzz and hype towards her advantage. Unfortunately, after acing round after round in the finals, she fell short in winning the crown, after a terrible performance at the Q&A. In the 1990s, Miriam became the most celebrated Miss Universe Pinay contestant (due to her almost winning the crown) until Venus Raj in 2010, who became the first Pinay to place after 10 consecutive years of the country being shut out in the finals.

The top three of Miss Universe 1999.

1999 was the only year the Philippines placed first runner-up (the highest finish since Gloria Diaz winning in 1969 and Margie Moran winning in 1973) which is also why Miriam was viewed as the last great Miss Philippines to enter the said pageant at the time.

Quaimbao made waves again in 2012 when she commented negatively on Miss Canada Universe allowing transgender Jenna Talackova to compete in the national level. If Talackova won, she would have been given the chance to compete in Miss Universe 2012, and be the first transgender to officially become a Miss Universe candidate.

Miriam's comments on the LGBT community.

She even went far by directly tweeting Donald Trump in a series of tweets.

@realDonaldTrump in my humble opinion, the decision to include transgenders in the @MissUniverse pageant sends the wrong message.

“This may set a precedent that one day most participants in @MissUniverse are transgenders. #essenceofawoman? #majormistake @realDonaldTrump”

Fast forward to 2020, Miriam is interviewed online to talk about her pageant experience. I already predicted the interview to go that route of talking about God and being a born again Christian, but I never thought that it would be a cringe-worthy interview which focused on Miriam incorporating and injecting her religious beliefs in every aspect and topic discussed.

The interview (based on the comments) seemed to put off many of the pageant fans as it didn't focus on the experience but on Miriam trying to invite people to join her congregation. The interviewer's face says it all. LOL!

I remember the previous Miss Earth preliminaries where she was invited as one of the judges. I think that was evening gown competition of one of the groups in Alabang. She preached there for 30 to 40 minutes. And the girls was like, "ghorl, we're so sleepy. Wrap it! Wanna go home". :%))

I have friends like Miriam who are equally lacking in situational awareness. We will be in the middle of a party, and they will start talking about religion and "how they were saved". They won't stop until the gathering is turned into a "revival". Or an award acceptance speech at work becomes a "testimonial about our Savior". Or a simple house visit becomes a "pray over".

It is not that we are intolerant of other people's religious beliefs. But there is a time and place for talking about these things. Not every event or occasion can be turned into a spiritual retreat. I think it's just a matter of courtesy to the host and other people you are with to keep your religious zeal in check because not everyone shares your beliefs. They really don't want to hear about religion every time you open your mouth.

It's just like having friends who are consumed by sports or politics, and they always find a way of steering the conversation towards sports and politics. It can be quite annoying, actually.

Buti na lang at tinalo siya ni Mpule Kwelagobe. Hindi ako nanghihinayang na hindi siya kinoronahang Miss Universe 1999.

Mpule is way more deserving to be Miss Universe than her.

Please tell that to Venus Raj, Precious Lara Quigaman and Catriona Gray. :%)) :%)) :%))

I used to work in a network (yes, that "closed" network LOL!) and almost everyone there has that motive. They will talk to you and spend time with you (and even go far by buying you drinks and food) just to drop the bomb at the end of the conversation and invite you to be "Saved" since they feel that it is important for them to "spread the word" and "share the good news" to others who are not part of their religious belief.

The crazy thing about their group is that they will not stop inviting new "disciples" because they firmly believe that it is their Christian duty to "save" more people. There's just something off and shady about their congregation because they would invite you to conferences and other faith-based activities where they are very eager to collect payments. LOL! The funny thing I observed from them is that when you don't reciprocate and they feel that they can't convince you, they move on and start ignoring you as if you never existed. :%)) :%)) :%))

I try to be polite with them but I think that it's so superficial as they concentrate on inviting and preying on those who they think can afford these faith-based activities. You will never see them hang out with people from the masses or from the "regular crowd" (who they think cannot afford luxuries), they are obviously in it for the money and it really shows in how they act towards people.

I don't necessarily think that is a bad thing her. She was a victim of unfortunate events such as harassment and domestic abuse. It was very dragging, the interview with her. She didn't make it interesting for pageant fans. But hey, she did a spectacular job in Miss Universe '99.

her pageant journey and after pageant life is just different.

During the time she was competing, she is making us proud and her goal is to put the Ph map in the world. I recognize that and give to her hands up.

her after-pageant life is different, she may just be trying to prove her existence and relevance by becoming an apostle for her congregation, that aspect, I don't care and I didn't listen to her.

I will always remember her during her stint in MU1999 and still made us proud and that's all.

She is very brave to speak up her mind and stand for her belief. She is a very rare queen. When it comes to religion and God, some people are very allergic coz they dont want to be reminded of their sinfulness. I admire Miriam for her bravery. Keep it up Queen. :=p :=p =D> =D>

She is a conservative ass 90’s queen
Nothing really surprised

If she hates my gay ass, I don’t like her too

It would be horrendous if she was former Miss Universe winner and made homophobic remarks under IMG era

Pure hate isn’t straightforward
And if your god teached you to hate someone, your god is an asshole
