MISS UNIVERSE PREVIOUS OWNERS HISTORY

WHEN WE THINK ABOUT MISS UNIVERSE ERA, IN OUR MIND IMMEDIATELY WE SEE IMG ERA AND TRUMP ERA.
BUT ONE OF MY BIGGEST CURIOSITY WAS ALWAYS TO KNOW THE PREVIOUS OWNER OF THE PAGEANT AND I HAVE SOME DIFFICULTIES TO SEARCH SOME INFO.
SO I STARTED TO WATCH EVERY VIDEO AVAILABLE OF PAST MISS UNIVERSE EDITIONS TILL THE END TO SNATCH SOME INFO, AND SO I CHECK SOME INTERESTING FACTS (ALSO THAT SHERRI HILL SPONSORED THE BEAUTY PAGEANT FOR THE FIRST TIME BACK IN 1988 :-O :-O :-O :-O )

THE FIRST OWNER OF MISS UNIVERSE AS WE ALL KNOW IS CATALINA SWIMSUIT, OWNED BY PACIFIC MILLS THAT RAN THE PAGEANT BETWEEN 1952 - 1958. THIS IS ALSO THE PERIOD WHEN MISS UNIVERSE TITLE, LIKE THAT OF MISS AMERICA, WAS DATED BY THE YEAR FOLLOWING THE CONTEST.
Image

IN 1959 CATALINA (AND MISS UNIVERSE/USA) WAS ACQUIRED BY KAYSER-ROTH CORPORATION A NOTABLE MANUFACTURE OF HOSIERY, LINGERIE AND GLOVES. IS ALSO THE FIRST TIME I CAN CHECK SOME NEWS ABOUT "MISS UNIVERSE, INC" (THAT IN 1998 BECOME MISS UNIVERSE ORGANIZATION) AND THE PRESIDENT WAS HEROLD L. GASSER (1918-2010), WHO RUN THE PAGEANT FROM 1959 TO 1986 AND WAS ALSO A GENERAL ADVISER OF KAYSER ROTH. AN INTERESTING FACT IN THE HISTORY OF HAROLD GLASSER CONCERNS THE CREATION OF THE ICONIC MISS UNIVERSE CROWN, DESIGNED BY HIMSELF.
Image
WITH KAYSER ROTH CORP, MISS UNIVERSE TITLE STARTING TO COINCIDE WITH THE YEAR OF THE CROWNING. AND THE PAGEANT MOVED FROM LONG BEACH TO MIAMI BEACH AND IN 1972 OUTSIDE THE USA FOR THE FIRST TIME.

BUT THE GOLDEN AGE OF MISS UNIVERSE STARTED IN 1975, WHEN KAYSER-ROTH WAS ACQUIRED BY THE LARGE CONGLOMERATE EMPIRE "GULF AND WESTERN INDUSTRIES", THAT IN 1966 HAD ALREADY PURCHASED PARAMOUNT PICTURES AND IN 1977 ALSO PURCHASED MADISON SQUARE GARDEN CORPORATION.
WITH THE VISIONARY EYE OF HEROLD L. GASSER (WITH HIS BUSINESS ACUMEN) AND THE GREAT FINANCIAL RESOURCES OF GULF AND WESTERN (EXPECIALLY BECAUSE OF PARAMOUNT) MISS UNIVERSE BECOME MORE ATTRACTIVE TO SPONSORS WHO DID NOT WANT TO STOP APPEARING IN THE END CREDITS OF THE CONTEST, SUCH AS: JEAN PETITE SHOES, CLAIROL, MAYBELLINE, HAWAIAN TROPIC, KODAK, CRYSLER, SECRET, CREST, ROBERTO CAVALLI, YAMAHA, MAZDA AND MANY OTHERS.
THE PAGEANT SO IN THIS ERA WAS ORGANIZED BY:
GULF+WESTERN AND KAYSER ROTH 1975-1981
GULF+WESTERN AND PARAMOUNT PICTURE 1982-1987
GULF+WESTERN AND MADISON SQUARE GARDEN CORP 1988-1991

STARTING THE 90S, ANOTHER ERA BEGAN. A FREE FALL IN FINANCIAL CRISIS ON THE PART OF THE INCORPORATION OF MISS UNIVERSE; THE GREAT EVENTS THAT SHOOK THE WORLD SUCH AS PERESTROIKA, THE INTRODUCTION OF NEW ADVANCES IN TECHNOLOGY AND EVENTS WITH GREATER POPULARITY, DIVERTED THE ATTENTION OF THE VIEWERS OF THE MISS UNIVERSE, LEAVING IT ADRIFT IN THE "RATING" OF THE EVENT. ALSO, MISS UNIVERSO AND ALL THE BEAUTY COMPETITIONS IN GENERAL HAVE ALREADY BEEN THE OBJECT OF CRITICS FROM THE WOMEN'S WORLD FOR YEARS, BECAUSE REPUTED AS ANACRONISTS AND DISRESPECTFUL TO WOMEN. BUT BETWEEN 80S AND 90S THE PHENOMENON WAS AMPLIFIED.
IT WAS TIME TO RENEW. THE CONCEPTS OF THE WORLD'S MOST IMPORTANT BEAUTY PAGEANT BEGAN TO CHANGE AND A NEW STANDARD BEGAN TO BE POLISHED, NOT ONLY BEUATY, BUT ALSO SUBSTANCE. THE STAGES OF THE CONTEST CHANGED, ADDING THE INTERVIEW PHASE TO GET CLOSER AND CLOSER TO THE CROWN. WE HAVE TOP 10-6-3 WITH THREE ROUND OD INTERVIEW.
BUT THE CRISIS OF MISS UNIVERSE INC WAS TOO BIG. GULF AND WESTERN SELL IT TO PROCTER AND GAMBLE PRODUCTION (P&G) AN AMERICAN MULTINATIONAL CONSUMER GOODS CORPORATION SPECIALIZED IN A WIDE RANGE OF PERSONAL HEALTH/CONSUMER HEALTH, AND PERSONAL CARE AND HYGIENE PRODUCTS; THESE PRODUCTS ARE ORGANIZED INTO SEVERAL SEGMENTS INCLUDING BEAUTY; GROOMING; HEALTH CARE; FABRIC & HOME CARE; AND BABY, FEMININE, & FAMILY CARE.
P&G HOLD THE PAGEANT BETWEEN 1992-1995

BUT ANOTHER WORSE FACT HAPPENED: CATALINA, THE CREATOR OF THE PAGEANT, STOPPED TO SPONSOR IT IN 1994.

THE INEVITABLE DECLINE OF THE CONTEST SEEMED NOT TO STOP. DONALD TRUMP IN 1996 BOUGHT THE CONTEST AS "A SICK PUPPY" TO PROMOTING AND TAKING THE CONTEST TO THE TOP AGAIN BUT ALWAYS WITH CONTROVERSIALS, LIKE “MISS PIGGY” OR “EATING MACHINE” REFERRED TO ALICIA MACHADO.
TRUMP’S PLAN TO BRING THE VALUATION UP WAS PRETTY BASIC “I’LL MAKE THE BIKINIS SMALLER AND THE HEELS HIGHER” HE SAID.
THE REST IS HISTORY.

NOW I HAD SOME PROBLEMS: EXCEPT PAULA SHUGART AND HAROLD L. GASSER, WHO ARE OTHER PRESIDENTS OF MUO? AND ITT CORP WHO IS? BECAUSE EVERY PAGE SAID THAT TRUMP BOUGHT THE PAGEANT FROM ITT CORP, BUT I DIDN'T CHECK ANYTHING ABOUT IT, BECAUS THE FINAL SCREEN OF MISS UNIVERSE 1992-1885 REPORT ONLY P&G. I NEED AN HELP OF PAGEANT HISTORIAN OF MISSO FAMILY [-O<

If you are asking about ITT, go to wikipedia and search for Miss Universe then it will tell you about it. Furthermore, the link about them will also show up for you to navigate and learn more about what they are doing these days. Productions about American products are always changing, they go from different hands after another but as long as they don't close down, it is fine. Miss World will stay with the Morleys while Miss Earth will stay with Lorraine Shuck et al forever and so as Miss Grand International with Nawat etc (too manys to mention) but American owned beauty pageants will go from one hands to another. It's expected and will happen every now and then. All we have to do is to embrace this change because we are just spectator and be thankful that there is always Miss Universe year after year.

From what I can find, the Miss Universe/USA/Teen USA brands were joined with Madison Square Garden brands (including the NY Knicks and NY Rangers) as part of Gulf-Western at least until 1995. Then, in 1995, ITT Corporation (International Telephone and Telegraph), which owned the Sheraton Hotel Chain, bought Madison Square Garden - presumably along with Miss Universe/USA/Teen USA, along with other acquisitions including Caesars Casinos. Later that same year, ITT did a restructuring and during this restructuring, they assessed that the pageant brands didn't fit their long-term vision, so they sold them to DT in 1996. ITT would eventually sell Madison Square Garden brands to Cablevision in 1997, to fight off a hostile takeover bid from the Hilton Group.

GREAT. I SEE IN THE FINAL CREDITS BETWEEN 1991-1995 THAT P&G OWNED PAGEANT SO I ASSUMED THAT G+W WAS ALREADY GONE.
1995 WAS AN HORRIBLE YEAR FOR MUO AT THIS POINT. WAS A PREVIEW OF 2015
