CHARACTER OVER BEAUTY; MISS UNIVERSE'S FINEST ANSWERERS

In Miss Universe, it is undisputed fact that before a candidate is given such title during the finals night, she needs to compete in the swimsuit and evening gown. But for most of the contestants nothing is more nerve wracking than the intense feeling during the final Q and A. We have seen a number of candidates startled and began struggling with their answers. Some are resorting to fillers just to give them time to go over with their thoughts for possible responses, others are asking for the help of interpreters and some just messed it up during this round thus, sacrificing their chances of capturing the much coveted crown.

It is for this reason that I have come up with this thread. It's simply my view as to which Miss Universe titleholders have the best responses during the final question round hence exhibiting a character over beauty...

Question: Which have it easier in life: men or women?

Dayana's Answer: "God made us to share and have differences, but big differences? I don't think so. The difference is that men think, they think that the faster way to go to a point is to go straight, and women know that the faster way to go to a point is go the curves and fix every curls".

Question: What is the one lesson you learned as a child that still affects your life today?

Riyo's Answer: "I have been dancing since I was a child. I grew up among many students and teachers. I learned to always be happy, patient and positive. That is also what I want to teach to the next generation. Thank you."

Question: What is the essence of being a woman?

Sushmita's Answer: "Just being a woman is God's gift that all of us must appreciate. The origin of a child is a mother, and is a woman. She shows a man what sharing, caring and loving is all about. That is the essence of a woman. "

Question: In the next day or so, a man will land on the moon. If a man from the moon landed in your hometown, what would you do to entertain him?

Gloria's Answer: "Oh, just the same things I do. I think if he has been on the moon for so long, I think when he comes over he wants to change, I guess. "

There is one Binibini aspirant who looks like Brook Lee.

Nice choices you have there, anyway!!! :=p :=p :=p

If I had it my way, I would probably add Lara Dutta.

I also love the fact that nowadays, the final Q&A is slowly gaining back its prestige and importance in terms of choosing the winner. There were years when we could not decipher why a mediocre answer would eventually give the girl a crown, so such edition becomes forgettable, at least for me.

Wendy won the interview and evening gown competitions and the final 3 in first place.
That year, thankfully, the judges did not make their choice based solely on the final question. They took into consideration of the contestant's overall performance and Wendy was deservingly the runaway winner.

I understand where you're coming from, but my point was based on consistency. Brook Lee managed to consistently get high scores in Q&A, and it had been her forte, despite getting mediocre scores in swimsuit and evening gown. See what happened to Italy and Curacao at Miss Universe 1997? And to Florida and Tennessee at Miss USA 1997? They bombed their Q&A, so they ended up not winning the title, which went to Brook.
In Wendy's Final Q&A, I almost muted the TV and just wanted to tell her to stop talking because she was going nowhere. Just like what Ali Landry said in her comments, it all depends if the judges would consider the overall performance that night. And the judges did. Thus, we had Wendy as a winner. But, in terms of pesonality, Veruska owned the night.

It was Wendy who had the looks and the personality. Why else the judges overlooked her rather faltering answer in the final question? In the semi-finals, Wendy outscored everyone else with a noticeable lead. She topped the top 5 interview round she faltered a bit in the final question, but she still delivered a good answer, although she misunderstood the question. So she made a great impression on the judges, who voted for her in every round except swimsuit, and even then, she was in second place.

As for the contestants you mentioned in Miss Universe and Miss USA, all of them failed to advance into the final 3, so the comparison here is not quite the same.

Dayana's answer sounds so silly & laughable when you read it, but it's only because her English wasn't that strong at the time.... I do get what she meant though. She was so well prepared in 08' there was noway in this planet anybody could have taken that crown away from her that year. A very well deserved win for Mendoza! 8->

It's very difficult to compare the answers of various Miss Universes from different generations due to the style of the Q & A from past to modern periods. Some questions commonly in the past were based on personality affiliation, while others had to do with expressing one's opinion on questions whether it be controversial or not. That's usually the type of question we're seeing nowadays.

My favorite answers from what I've seen would have to be from Miss Botswana in 1999, Miss India in 2000, and Miss Canada in 2005. Botswana really impressed me with her response by stating that the condition of femininity should be a celebration. On the other hand, India really went the extra mile with her input on the significance of beauty pageants. I was also pleased with the way she delivered despite the tension revolving around that question. As for Canada, despite being only in her 20's, her words of wisdom proved that she was way beyond her years and more than just a pretty face.

I personally believe that Cindy Nell's "You don't have to be phenomenal to do phenomenal things" answer in 2003 should be up there.
