In Focus: Why Deborah Henry clapped, Catriona Gray won?

As we continue about why she placed, why she clapped series. We are taking a look about these hyped former Miss World contestants from Asia who competed at Miss Universe pageant.

Back in 2011 when Miss World 2007 Top 16 semifinalist Deborah Henry was hyped by some pageant fans that she will end the 41 year placement drought (at that time) at Miss Universe 2011 and also her former batchmates from Miss World 2007 Ada Dela Cruz and Yendi Philips finished 1st Runner Up in 2009 and 2010 respectively. Some of the fans think that Deborah will repeat that awesome finish at Miss Universe 2011 just like Ada and Yendi. All of the sudden, at the final competition, Deborah ended up as a clapper and even worse that a moderately hyped Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup continued the placement streak that Venus started along with Miss China Zi Lin Luo.

Now last December 2018, another hyped former Asian Miss World contestant competed at Miss Universe 2018, this time it is Catriona Gray. Although lots of fans believed that she will win the pageant but some of us think about the "Asian MW curse" at Miss Universe that started with Kim Joo Ri in 2010, Deborah in 2011 and Loan in 2017. But her fate at Miss Universe was exact opposite from Deborah when she made it to the semifinals all the way to the crown.

Now let set aside the Sash Factor and Trump/IMG factor, why do you think Deborah clapped while Catriona ended up winning the pageant? Is preparation and attitude the key of these results? Will Catriona's fellow competitors at Miss World 2016 follow suit and possibly duplicate her win at Miss Universe in the near future?

I remembered that some netizens are bashing Shamcey after she made it to the semifinals and finished 3rd Runner Up while their hyped delegate Deborah ended up unplaced.

That's how pageants work nowadays, it's pure business. No one in Malaysia was interested in sponsoring Deborah so she clapped even if she's 10000 more stunning than Catriona.

Catriona delivered and bestowed a lifelong nightmare to her bashers.

The other one was just pure hype.

Shamcey was not an underdog. She was one of the favorites as well. She was chosen along with Ms China, Venezuela and Brazil for Smile Campaign together with Ximena.

Deborah's hair and make up might have cost her the placement. Malaysia and Peru were stunning but unplaced.

Deborah Henry is indeed beautiful but that ends there. No wow factor, no further surprises or excitement cones from her. She is purely hyped. Before the advent of crazy thai and indonesian fans, Malaysia is the self proclaimed best in Asia.

On the other side, Catriona is killing the preliminaries since day 1. No any other girl comes close, not even Tamaryn or hhen nhie. Hyped at social media even previous Miss USAs predicted her as the winner. Deborah Henry isn't even favored.

But well i think she is reqlly beautiful

We can't deny the fact that Deborah is pretty but just like
Safira de Wit in 2010, They are plane and boring.

First off, I never heard of the "Asian MW Curse" being discussed about Catriona this year; she was the universal favorite for the crown from the get-go. Secondly, Shamcey was never an underdog--to the contrary, she was one of those expected to place well.

Comparing Deborah and Catriona is like pitting apples with oranges. There is nothing similar in their their personalities and packaging, except for their being former Miss World participants. That should not be taken as parameter in assessing why one won and the other didn't.

DEBORAH HENRY CLAPPED BECAUSE OF POLITICS PLAYED BY TRUMP. IF DEBORAH COMPETED IN THE IMG ERA, I'M PRETTY SURE SHE'LL LAND IN THE TOP 3. IT WAS ALL POLITICS IN MY OWN OPINION. DO YOU REALLY THINK LEILA LOPES PERFORMED THE BEST DURING THE CORONATION NIGHT? OR PRISCILLA MACHADO OVER SHAMCEY? [-X [-X

Exactly, if politics were not involved and Trump did not need to include girls like Brazil & Portugal along with other political picks, she would have made it. IMO, Miss Universe 2011 was not one of the strongest batches in history and Deborah was absolutely among the top girls so I blame her clapping on politics

She's pretty and has good communication skills though, one of the best reps or the best Malaysian delegate so far.. Until this day I still don't get it why she clapped so hard. I can still remember her compatriot Ms Anne Steph who even left the forum after that edition..

Politics. Obviously this destroyed Henry's chances. Catriona's win was a transaction between Chavit Singnon and the MUO.

"Asian MW Curse" - After Pauline Yeung (MW1987 Top 12 & MU1988 4th Runner Up), some MW Asian placers tried to compete at Miss Universe later on but they ended up as clappers. 3 of them placed at Miss World but ended up as clapper at Miss Universe later on prior to Catriona's victory at Miss Universe 2018.

Some netizens hyped Debbie at Miss Universe 2011 yet some of them even put her into the top spot. After her non-placement some of the netizens blamed and bashed Shamcey for her non-placement.

I could possible agree with that but in my thread I set aside Trump/IMG factor and just based only their merits. Reminder that Mr. Trump did not attend the 2011 pageant yet possibly influenced his choice or Madam Paula in choosing the semifinalists.

Deborah destined to clap while Catriona is for winning Miss Universe.

I agree with some of the forumers above, her style killed her chances and she was not favored by Trump. Yeah, she's better than Portugal and even Priscilla. But online voting and hometurf advantage played for these two girls, respectively.

I want Malaysia to level up. I want them to crack in the semis to end their very long drought. I love Sam (MUM '17). And Malaysians seem to be nice person than ahemmmmm, nations that must not be named. Hahaha.

If Zuleyka's dirty looking face won Miss Universe why not with Deborah? It was all plain politics. Who would forget Denise Quinones travesty winning all minor awards and she was just too ordinary. If not with their hosting and all american judges she would only be Top 10. =b =b =b =b

Well just because Trump was not at that pageant does not mean politics were not involved and that he did not have a say, he definitely knew what countries he wanted to do business with probably looked at the girls all online and had people reporting to him, plus remember that he met Sheldry Saez earlier that year? She did not deliver in Brazil and probably was a Trump card because he wanted to host the pageant in Panama again. We all know Portugal did not win the fan vote and they just used it that year as an extra spot for a Trump favorite and Malaysia was a victim to it.

As for Catriona winning, people need to grow up and move on she was the best that year and on the finale and overall the most complete choice. Whether it was fixed for her or not? We will never know but it does not change the fact that it was the best and thats why she won. But as for her winning and Deborah clapping, they competed in two completely different years and eras so I do not think their end results have anything to do with each other :)>-

Deborah clapped hard simply because she had no strategy.
She was beautiful and smart but boring, no signature walk, no attention grabbing clothes, videos, et cetera.
Catriona had a game-plan and an efficient team. She was miles ahead in every aspect.

Deborah clapped because she did not perform well. Yeah, there was politics in pageants but that alone does not decide who gets into finals. Remember their scores going to the finals are combination of preliminary judge's AND members of the Miss Universe organization (trump picks). So even if Deb is not one of Trump picks, she could've gone to the top 15 if she did well in the preliminaries. Sadly her youthful vibe from Miss World had left her and she was too rehearsed, almost robotic. There was no fluidity in her swimsuit and evening gown walks.

She also comes off as fake, you cannot feel the sincerity from her. Compare her web interviews with that of Angola, Ukraine and Shamcey. She was not engaging. Too bad her accomplishments were impressive. If only she had more charismatic personality.

Deborah Henry as well as other half-breed Malaysians didn't make the cut as they were not properly trained. No beauty camp or beauty house to groom them. Also, they have attitude and personality superiority. Back at home, they were like demigods as blessed with foreign blood compared to local Muslim or ethnic Chinese girls. But they should have left their airs and graces back home when they competed in the international arena. Did you also know that Deborah's parents were seen and heard arguing during the prelims? Staffers at Miss U knew about this. They just don't know how to put their best foot forward and keep up with the protocol........InTheKnow.

Some Filipinos sitting next to her parents said that the father was so arrogant and rude especially after Shamcey made it while his daughter failed to make the cut. There was also an article written by one of the preliminary judges saying that they found Leila Lopez and Shamcey as the most natural among the delegates. This was probably one of the reasons why Ms Henry failed to advance. She seemed to try too hard to gain attention which somehow reminds me a bit of Tamaryn Green's pabida style that is why some people find both of these ladies a bit phony. Deborah Henry's strategy was to arrive in Brazil earlier than the rest to have a photo opportunity at an orphanage hoping that this will impress the Miss Universe staff. Kaloka!

She looks okay but not beautiful in my eyes. Her face has no angle very chubby and round plus she lacks personality. She was too rehearsed, she seemed unnatural.
