Were there any candidates that were only made 1st runners up when the pageant was held in their country?

I can't imagine if Miss Thailand was the 1st runner up to Catriona this year, think about the outrage it might trigger on the thai audience. >=p >=p >=p

Only Miss USAs have:

Nia Sanchez (2014)
Carole Gist (1990)
Julie Hayek (1983)
Deborah Shelton (1970)
Myrna Hansen (1953)

Priscila Machado came close when she was undeservingly 2nd Runner Up

You know what, it would've been interesting if Nia competed in her home city of Las Vegas during Miss USA and/or Miss Universe. It just so happened that MUO in 2014 decided to host the two pageants in Baton Rouge (BEST EDITION OF MISS USA for me) and Miami (Miss Universe).
Nia is such a lucky charm that she won Miss USA for Nevada outside that state after hosting it for several years.

But Catriona's victory caused outrage among non-pinoys anyway.

What that person meant was, "Catriona's victory caused outrage among non-pinoys because the non-pinoys were outraged by the trolls and losers who bashed Catriona."
