MISS UNIVERSE PAGEANT
POSITIVE SURPRISES from the latest 10 editions
(from 2008 to 2017)

Good Day everyone.
As my Valentine treat to every pageant lovers out there, we will be discussing the most positive surprises from the last 10 editions of Miss Universe --- which means, we will be looking from 2008 to 2017.
We usually see favorites placing and some are missing the cut but it is always refreshing to see some unexpected performers. This is why we really cannot depend on what we see on the preliminaries because once the ladies make the first cut, some are even shining. Now, let's talk about them one by one.
>=p >=p >=p >=p >=p >=p >=p >=p >=p >=p >=p >=p >=p >=p >=p
>=p >=p >=p >=p >=p >=p >=p >=p >=p >=p >=p >=p >=p >=p >=p
---------------------------------------------
***2008***
VERA KRASOVA, Russia, (3rd runner-up)
Image
- Who would ever forget this Russian beauty? In the year filled with shockingly bad placements like Hungary, Japan, Vietnam --- thank goodness we have someone like Russia. Her Top 15 and Top 10 placement is already expected but seeing her in the Top 5 is a pleasant surprise. With the fall of heavy favorites from Spain and USA, she surprisingly manage to sneak into the Top 5. During the final question, she gave a very sweet answer and I know that many are expecting she'll already get the 4th runner-up spot because the four Latinas are too strong --- but No. She even beat Mexico putting her 5th and giving herself a worthy 4th place.
---------------------------------------------
***2009***
GONA DRAGUSHA, Kosovo (2nd runner-up)
Image
- Here comes another year of horrible placements with Croatia, Iceland, Belgium, Albania. With it's second year in the competition, we knew that Kosovo sent out another good contender. After the swimsuit competition, it was a good performance and the Top 10 placement was expected but I bet not many pageant fans expected her to go all the way in the Top 5. But when she comes out of that stage during the evening gown, we already knew right then that Dominican Republic got a strong competition now. When she made the Top 5, every one was thrilled of her placement. But when the result was announced, it was the historic back-to-back that no one saw coming leaving the favorite Dominican Republic in 2nd place and Kosovo in 3rd place.
---------------------------------------------
***2010***
JESSICA SCHEEL, Guatemala (Top 10)
Image
- This is undoubtedly the most positive and surprising placement of 2010. Jessica ended Guatemala's long drought. When she came out, I thought she was only good til' the Top 15 but seeing her advanced in the Top 10 is both surprising and exciting. Her evening gown performance was not the best but I loved it. Her exclusion in the Top 5 was no surprise but seeing her reach that far was something Guatemala could be proud of.
---------------------------------------------
***2011***
LEILA LOPES, Angola (Winner)
Image
- When all eyes and bets are on USA, Philippines and China winning, Angola's victory is something that we can call a surprising but satisfying victory.I still remember the times where no one predicted her victory and majority even placed her on low bets. When Angola qualified in the Top 16, it was no surprise. I wasn't even gonna call her performance one of the best. But when evening gown comes, the crowd's cheer and her personality just sealed her a Top 5 spot. Finally, when she received that question and answered it in the most cheerful, adorable and charismatic way, I bet we already knew that Angola owns that crown.
---------------------------------------------
***2012***
AGNES KONKOLY, Hungary (Top 10)
Image
- She was one of my sentimental favorites to place this year and I am so thrilled when Hungary was called in the semifinals. I truly loved her swimsuit performance although it would beem forgettable for others. When she entered the Top 10, I was even more thrilled of it. But sadly, the gown choice was poor which made me think that she didn't prepare enough for it because probably she wasn't expecting to reach that far. But either way, it was a great accomplishment.
---------------------------------------------
***2013***
CONSTANZA BAEZ, Ecuador (2nd runner-up)
Image
- This was a total surprise for me --- but a good one. When she was called in the semifinals, I was very pleased because this was a justice served after what happened to Carolina Aguirre in 2012. But when the competition starts, I didn't expect her to slay it. To be honest, I was even expecting she would be one of the last two standing after seeing all her performances but a 2nd runner-up placement was a well-deserved one and it would probably take a bit long again before we see Ecuador surpass and reach this placement again.
---------------------------------------------
***2014***
NETHERLANDS, Yasmin Verheijen (3rd runner-up)
Image
- Although this placement may have pissed many fans, this was totally one of the best positive surprises of this year. Netherlands' placement came out of nowhere and seeing her advance from Top 15 to Top 10 to Top 5 was a complete shocker to all of us. I know her placement is a bit high but looking at the entire show again, you'd definitely realize that she truly deserves it. Ofcourse, with the exception of her placing above my favorite Kaci Fennell from Jamaica.
---------------------------------------------
***2015***
CURACAO, Kanisha Sluis (Top 10)
Image
- Another surprising but good placement in the start of IMG era. Performance-wise, I wouldn't really call it a ''wow'' thing. But in the IMG era where strong profile and women empowerment is a huge hit, there's no wonder that Kanisha would place. Her Top 15 placement was unexpected but during the show, seeing her advance even further to the Top 10 was a really good choice. She totally deserves to bring Curacao back on the map.
---------------------------------------------
***2016***
HAITI, Raquel Pelissier (1st runner-up)
Image
- What a positive surprise for 2016. Probably, one of the reason why many --- including myself, ignored her because of her weak sash. But it was no question that she slayed every round of the competition. I was betting on France this year and I was even nervous seeing her in the final two because everybody knows that she did well. A first-runner-up placement was indeed a great comeback for her country.
---------------------------------------------
***2017***
JAMAICA, Davina Bennett (2nd runner-up)
Image
- Well, this is probably fresh to all of us and indeed one of the best surprises of all. We know Jamaica have the package to enter the Top 16 but I bet no one (except the Jamaicans, maybe) would expect that she would go as far as Top 3. One of my favorites profile among the 2017 contestants and one of the most likeable as well. It was even interesting when some people even jump to Jamaica's bandwagon and is betting on her to win after the Top 5 announcement. She may not went home with the crown but she indeed went home with so much love and admiration from pageant fans.

THANK YOU FOR READING!!!

FOR THE RECORD, NO ONE REALLY SAW LEILA WINNING! SHE WAS LOWKEY THE ENTIRE COMPETITION.
I REMEMBER IN MISSO'S FINAL HOTPICKS SHE WAS IN THE 11-16TH RANGE, AND SHE WASNT EVEN IN MINE.
BUT FOR ME, IT WAS A WELL-DESERVED VICTORY. SHE TRULY SHONE THAT NIGHT LIKE A DIAMOND WAS VERY CHARISMATIC.
UP TO THIS DAY, I'M STILL WAITING FOR ANOTHER LEILA LOPES-VICTORY IN MISS UNIVERSE, someone that we really didn't expect to win.

Constanza in 2013 was heavily favored by a few. But personally, I think, her preliminary performance sealed her a spot already. She was one of the strongest in 2013. China was the most unexpected that year.

In fact I prefered Constanza Baez over Spain, I wished Gabriela and Constanza being top 2 they were my ultimate favourites in 2013. 8->

Gona Dragusha completed the incredibly stunning top 5 at 2009 :=p

And honestly, I have not been fan of Vera Krasova, Russia can do better.
Yasmin Verheijen was on the top of my underdog list ;)

Hate to be the first one to say it, but for me, Davina, Raquel and Yazmin went waaay too far! They were surprises indeed, but not so sure if positive surprises :(

Davina's place could have gone to Monalysa or Rachel, Raquel's place to Chalita or Raissa and Yazmin's (AND DEFINITELY NIA'S PLACE) to Desiree or Valentina.

*In 2008 Vera Krasova wasn't a huge surprise to me, I thought she was stunning, Dominican Republic was the real WTF in the Top 5 for me but her gown was amazing and helped her catapult but I would've put USA in the Top 5 instead of her. There were so many WTFs in the Top 15 though like Czech Republic, Hungary, Vietnam...

*2009 was the year of WTFs and Stefania I think winning was the biggest surprise to many but I wasn't surprised, I thought she was stunning and deserved her win completely! That year Dominican Republic was overrated in my mind and placed a little too high, Gona was a frontrunner to me all along even though I like Zana Krasniqi more, I was alright with Puerto Rico in the Top 5 but I wouldn't have put her ahead of France or South Africa. That year the real WTFs for me were: Czech Republic (I never liked her she looked old to me and had terrible styling and a bad gown), Switzerland (she was horrible and one of the biggest WTF placements ever for me), Albania (beautiful but a little too striking for me and she shouldn't have made it over other girls) and Croatia (she was okay but she always had a disgusted expression on her face and was bland. I was fine with Belgium and Sweden placing and I even think Belgium should've made Top 10.

*2010 the Top 15 made complete sense to me and was perfect. I could've done without Belgium but it wasn't a big deal and she wasn't out of place. I am one of the few people who LOVED Czech Republic that year and I didn't see Guatemala coming but I totally saw it when she walked on stage and I loved her performance. I would've been fine if she had gone further even though I preferred other girls to her.

*2011 Leila was kind of a boring Miss Universe but you can't deny, that night was her night and she sparkled on stage and deserved it, she saved the best for last. Brazil would've clapped if it was held in another country, I also thought China was very overrated and shouldn't have been in the Top 5. Portugal, Colombia and Kosovo should not have been in the Top 16 and I saw Netherlands placement coming, I liked her a lot. I thought Venezuela was overrated but she stopped where she should've stopped and I would've put Puerto Rico and Netherlands in the Top 10 over Brazil and Portugal for sure.

*2012 was also a year of WTFs. Olivia Culpo was not the best that night but I was not surprised she won. I thought Hungary did great in swimsuit and could've made Top 5 if she had a better gown, I did not get Russia at all, India and Peru were huge WTFs, I was alright with Turkey even though she was a big surprise and I would've put Poland in the Top 10 over Russia.

*2013 I can't believe China placed, huge WTF for me, I also could've done without Nicaragua as Poland was way stronger than both. Puerto Rico was amazing but she was sabotaged for the finale sadly and I would've put Costa Rica in Top 10.

*2014 there was no major surprise to me and I wasn't really shocked when Netherlands and Italy made it BUT I think Netherlands made it wayyyyyy too far I thought she would be cut after her awkward hand gesture in swimsuit. I also think USA placed way too high and like said above Spain and Argentina should've been in the Top 5 instead of USA and Netherlands.

*2015 I would've put another African girl in over South Africa but she was alright, Japan had a great story but was not Top 15 material and I was shocked when she moved onto Top 10 over Brazil, I would not have put Curacao over Brazil but I was fine with her in the Top 10, I would've been fine too if Belgium took her spot in Top 10, she is not one of the most memorable shocker placements for me.

*2016 Kenya and Haiti were huge surprises but BOTH of them deserved to go as far as they did. Kenya's performance was amazing and to me she's the poor mans Naomi Campbell and I only ignored Haiti because of her weak sash and I am still mad at myself today for overlooking her, I even thought she would win at one point in the competition, she did amazing. USA and Canada were fine but I could've done without them in the Top 9 although neither placement surprised me. I definitely would've put Panama in Top 9 over both of them.

*In 2017 there were a lot of WTFs because of the new format for choosing the Top 16, however Jamaica became a frontrunner during the final days of the pageant, I'm not Jamaican and I had her as my first runner up in my prediction and I saw many people put her as their winner. I also saw her placing well from far away after I read her bio and looked at her instagram. She isn't the conventional beauty but she sure was IMG criteria. It was Demi-Leighs night for sure and even though I'm Colombian, I would've even put her ahead of Colombia and made her first runner up. Ireland and Croatia were huge WTFs in my opinion and I'm sure they'd id great in Interview but Iceland and Russia and France were so much stronger than them. Spain was not a WTF and was clearly the strongest of the girls from Europe who made it but I think Iceland should've been the European flag bearer after her. I also did not need USA in the Top 10, she might be my least favorite Miss USA in recent years actually and I would've put Ghana in the Top 10 ahead of her.

I always thought that Leila Lopes (Angola) was a frontrunner during her year. Considering Brazil as the host country, and I really find her gorgeous, I placed her in my Top 5 that year together with Shamcey, Luo, Vanessa and Olesya, and I was right that she might place higher than Alyssa (USA).

When Agnes (Hungary) was crowned in her country, I immediately thought of a European version of Alyssa Campanella, which for me is a good thing. I didn't place her in the final Top 16 but she's always been my sentimental favorite.

Constanza (Ecuador) has the best improvement that I've seen from all Miss Ecuador Universes. I didn't like her at first when Carolina Aguirre crowned her but I knew that she has the potential to place. Then came the preliminary competition, I already saw her as a threat. She delivered so well during the finals especially with her impeccable evening gown.

Yasmin (Netherlands) has a beautiful face. Really beautiful face which I really liked. Personally, she was one of the most beautiful Dutch representatives I saw in Miss Universe in recent years, but somehow I didn't see her placing that year, maybe because she lacked something when I watched her in pre-pageant events and during the preliminaries. But then, she surprised everyone during the finals. It was good, but I personally thought that Spain deserved the spot over her.

I can't have solid comments about Vera, Marigona and Jessica.

To all the points I bold: agreed. Especially for Nia Sanchez placement. She was placed way too high that year, Miss Spain for me was more deserving than this Taekwondo kid. By the way Thank you for your point about Çağıl in 2012. :hx
In 2017, I would have changed a lot of girls in the top 16 if I could.
