Things Miss Universe has taught us which can be applied this year

Postby sephie » Tue Nov 14, 2017 2:20 pm

It is safe to argue that Miss Universe is not as innovative as MW when it comes to prepageant concepts. However, there are still good points each year which they can use moving forward.

2010 taught us the value of fans. The viral video of Philippine fans made an impact on how Miss Universe now sees the Philippines.

2011 taught us that it is okay to NOT to wear an underwear during pre pageant activities. KIDDING! This year has taught us about incredible stage design and how sexy brazilian bikinis are. It also taught us that the host country candidate has so much pressure on her shoulder

2012 taught us the eventual winner can have a career in hollywood

2013 taught us that they can be fashion forward. how i wish that every year the candidates walk for a well known designer. it also taught us that if the host country is not selected in the top 15, then the stadium can be empty

2014 taught us that the school's stadium is not a good pageant venue :) but this year taught us to get well known judges- Manny Pacquiao, William Levy, etc.

2015 taught us that bloopers can make the pageant popular again. This year taught us that a small country can actually bring so much money to the organization and how the organization needs high caliber artists aka seal

2016 taught us that they can still tour the host country. Las Vegas locks them up in the hotel so the Philippines brought back the glorious pageantry of before.

2017 taught us to attract more candidates and that the quality of the candidates the interest and engagement of the audience

Hopefully, they can apply everything this year or the years to come

Interesting observations! And here's also what I am observing in Miss Universe in the 2010's period. They keep on changing their show formats almost every year, even if it was a minor change or not.

2010 - Top 15 - 10 - 5 (similar as 2003-2009), the Miss Photogenic was voted online.
2011, 2012, 2013 - Top 16 - 10 - 5, a change because there was a 16th spot voted by the fans.
2014 - Back to Top 15, 10, 5, but there are two sets of Q&A for the Final 5. National Costume Winner chosen by a fan vote
2015 - Top 15 - 10 - 5, but now there's a Top 3. A global fan vote was also applied.
2016 - Top 13 (originally Top 12, but a 13th spot voted by the fans), a global fan vote also applied.

I wonder what will be the format this 2017. If they can't do a Top 20, I want them to bring back Top 15 and 16. And oh, maybe a different type of semifinalist group. It would be nice to see non-sash factor countries placing just like in 2016!

Don't forget that 2015 introduced Contestants' Winner, where the contestants voted among the Top 3 on who they wanted to win the pageant and it will be part of the total scores aside from the Judges.

2009
The capability of MUO team transformed the small ballroom into a TV production worthy venue, at least for me, this is one of the most interesting set design.
Back to back victory is possible, and Venezuela was the one who did it first.
Fans chose the actual crown for Miss Universe through online voting.
The luxurious Atlantis Resort and the beautiful islands of Bahamas, it has since become my dream vacation spot!

2010
An electrifying dance number for the very last official opening dance at Miss Universe.
I was a 15 yo innocent kid, but Guatemala taught me what sex appeal is about, those juicy boobies, I can't! The rest is history. :"> >:)
Don't underestimate the relation between Las Vegas, Red Gown, and Mexico, this is the winning formula, but not in 2012, though.
MUO went low with the lemonade event and contestants posed in swimsuits for old man reporters in the hotel lobby.

2011
The importance of fans community, with Portugal, winning the first fan vote, and yet the fan meter does not matter the actual result at all.
The historic win of Angola, Leila Lopes, one of the most underrated Miss Universe ever. I can't with her speaking, but Leila is successful personally and professionally.
The pressure on Miss Brazil, being bashed by the locals, but at least she redeemed with a 2nd RU. Her fight back attitude was appreciated.
Do not overhype your own contestant, Malaysia has no power and luck, let's be real. But Deborah Henry gave a good fight, she was top notch for Malaysian standard.
Everything about Brazil and the final production. Looking back, it was one of best editions showing cultural and heritage at both pre and final events.

2012
Miss Universe happened in Christmas season, with plenty of tacky Christmas B-roll and the over-festive stage. MUO went full festive that year!
Olivia Culpo actually ended up in Hollywood, one of the most beautiful faces and sexiest Miss Universe ever. I was disappointed when she posed nude, but whatever, she is doing good now! :hx
Irene Esser. That girl was magnetic and her green gown was iconic! She wore a Chocolate costume and a Christmas Tree gown. She went full festive! :hx
Janine Tugonon's answer. A simple yet powerful message, and relevant, especially when a lot of non-English speaking won Miss Universe back and forth.

2013
Confused and rushed crowning moment happened, but nothing worse than 2015 stunt. Gabriela's reaction was genuine, she hugged Miss Spain. :=p
The entire competition was world class, the fashion week, the golf event! Emin and his father were ridiculously wealthy.
Amy Willerton, Miss Great Britain is sexually attractive as f**k! MUO took Gabriela, but I want her! >:)
Olivia Culpo strunt in million dollars Yamamay swimsuit and Gabriela had to wear it next day, just ROLF! =;))
Ariella Arida silky smooth long hair and YELLOW IS THE COLOR OF JOY. I had since adapted this tagline. Thank you, Jeannie.

2014
Miss Universe postponed until January 2015, this is not the only time though.
Paulina won Miss Universe, hooray! Yes, you can have a striking beauty yet with a goofy character, she is so real.
The set was overwhelmed with those Art Deco props, it taught me less is more.
This was perhaps one of the sexiest swimsuit batch, Ukraine, Colombia, Jamaica, Argentina, Indonesia, Netherlands and of course the music was surprisingly good!
Malaysia arrived last, almost missed out the important event, yet Sabrina's national costume was on point and remained one of the best for Malaysia.

2015
Pia's papaya was everywhere. :%)) Joking! She was the new era trendsetter, she lived up to the MUO and IMG expectation, so do the fans community.
Slovenia's incident yet not stopping her presence during the final night was the best thing ever!
Paulina's final walk and her word 'sleep when you can'. So relatable!
The best production in years. Every national pageant tried hard to copy and paste the production. It was often imitated but never duplicated, not even Miss Universe 2016 repeated the same value. The stage was made for the AXIS and Miss Universe 2015!

2016
Iris Mittenaere. Everything about her, and even the Moulin Rouge costume.
Philippines hospitality. MUO didn't even show 1/3 of the pre-events at final production, unfortunately.
Best Top 3 Gowns, all dressed in gold. Expensive!
The candid moment of Colombia was so sweet and when she teared up, that was a winning moment for me. I don't know the reason, but I was thinking she must be thankful she made it to Top 3 and the pressure of three-peat fulfilled.
Venezuela cried hard when she failed to advance. Attitude matters.
Canada. Telegenic girl but hey your body is so much smaller at Miss Supranational just a year ago yet it taught us that bigger woman is now appreciated at Miss Universe.
MUO bold decision to cut down to only 13 placements and group competitions.

It taught us that you cannot depend on the photoshop alone so might as well put on a great foundation before doing heavy make up.
