I love the bubbly personality, beauty and spontaneity of Gianna Llanes of Mandaluyong City. She is such a glib talker and like Catriona Gray, Gianna can be an outstanding spokesperson for the Miss Earth brand. I hope she wins the MPE title and eventually the Miss Earth crown. We surely have a better batch of girls this year than last year.

While other national pageants are basically 'dormant' due to Covid pandemic, it is amazing how Miss Philippines Earth is able to keep the pageant activities afloat. The org is really innovative.

I rather my local pageants stay dormant because the local media would have a field day if they find out they will do pageants in a lockdown, they love to pick on pageants

Life must go on as they say. What I am trying to point out is, both Miss Earth Philippines and USA are making their queens busy despite being quarantined. Theh have activities related to pageantry. MPE is very innovative.

Feeding a Thirsty World - Food & Water Security

One of Emirates Environmental Group's platform is our panel discussions. EEG has been engaging all the sectors of the society through it's community lecture series since 1992, in which it harnesses the power of exchange of ideas and effective dialogue. Through this panel discussions EEG strives to bring global environmental issues with the right context to fit the local and regional situation.

Feeding a Thirsty World - Food & Water Security
A rising global population and changing weather and climate patterns disrupts food and water availability, requiring innovative and forward-looking approaches to securing food and water.

I can still remember the time when i had the opportunity to invite our Miss Earth 2015 Angelia Ong, as one of our speakers for our panel discussion "Sustainable Fashion" last February. She shared her journey in having positive impact on the environment as well as inspiring me to join Miss Philippines Earth and follow my strong passion for global environment and climate change. I always look up to her for being a perfect example for the youth. She is strong and determined woman who is fearless in having a voice for protecting our mother earth.

Mark down 28th of May in your calendar for a virtual panel discussion with us 'Feeding a Thirsty World-Food & Water Security'. You don't want to miss this, and you can be a part of it from the comfort of your home. Register today! For details, write to us on eeg@emirates.net.ae

#EcoNewNormal Tip of the Day: Do what you can to buy from local farmers! Patronize fresh-market-on-wheels programs and other initiatives designed to help dispose of produce, which will help kickstart the local economy as well!

As an Eco Angel during the Enhanced Community Quarantine imposed in the NCR, one of my first activities was to volunteer with The Veggie Drop-Off (VDO). VDO is a non-profit organization that helps farmers from Baguio who are having a hard time selling their produce in Metro Manila. It does so by linking the farmers with Local Government Units that are looking for a more affordable source of food for their constituents. Such people are unable to buy food either due to the lack of open markets, or the lack of supply due to the closed off routes between each region.

As someone who values humanitarian causes and knows the environmental significance of supporting local farmers and going organic, I signed up to assist VDO in its collaboration with the Quezon City LGU. The project aimed to open two simultaneous Mobile Fresh Markets in Brgy. Greater Lagro and Brgy last March 31, 2020.

The vegetables from the highlands were brought to Quezon City, but due to the COVID19 government-imposed health & safety measures, the farmers could not accompany them. So as volunteers we had to look after and sell the vegetables in the farmer’s stead.

It was quite the experience, being a vegetable seller for a day. It certainly gave me a lot of insight into how much work our farmers put into making sure we have access to food. From meeting the delivery team at 4 AM to tabulating all the sales so we could properly turn over the proceeds to the farmers at 4 PM, it was an unforgettable 12-hour shift that has left me with a great respect for the frontliners from the agricultural sector.

Attending the activity was a huge risk to take, considering that Quezon City is a hotspot for COVID-19 cases in NCR (now currently with 1,832 confirmed cases), but with the assurance that all health and safety protocols would be observed, and my passion for service to my countrymen, I felt brave enough to go and serve, and the results were truly rewarding.

As we move forward to a #BetterNormal, I hope we all continue to help each other as one strong united community. Don’t forget to make better humanitarian choices in the midst of this public health crisis whenever you get the chance to do so.

What relief programs did you support during the COVID-19 crisis? Share your stories below and let’s inspire each other!

CALLING ALL MILK TEA LOVERS!

Due to our hot weather, most of us crave for refreshing drinks. With this, the popularity of milk teas, not just in Philippines but also across the globe, really spiked up. Plastic cup production for this industry doubled the rising concern over plastic waste.

What we can do as normal citizens is to be more aware about this issue and start patronizing businesses (not just milk tea shops) that are taking initiatives in reducing plastic waste.

To contribute in the reduction of plastic waste, I reused my milk tea cup and turned it into a water bottle. Love Mother Earth and stay hydrated!

ATIMONAN, QUEZON

People who are very close to me know how much I love chocolates. For someone who has a sweet tooth like me the day I was able to visit a Cacao nursery and see for myself how my favorite chocolates are made felt like heaven!

I was even more delighted to discover that it’s not just chocolates that can be made from a Cacao tree but there are also other interesting products that can be generated out from it like wine and nibs. Another best example is it’s leaves. It undergoes a process called fossilization and use it as raw materials to create artworks and home furnishings giving sustainable jobs to the locals of Atimonan. Because of this I was inspired to use the cacao fossilized leaves as the main material of my Eco Angel wings.

It is true now that Cacao is not just for satisfying our sweet buds and craving appetites. With our creativity, we were able to create a livelihood from the “Tree of Love”. Let’s keep on supporting Local!

“There’s always room for plants to grow”. Space saving with climbing plants;

Wherever you may live, there will always be posts, walls and fences. These can be used for hanging and climbing plants. Many Climbers such as roses, bougainvilleas, vines and even legumes can be planted to cover posts or fences. Sunny spots can even sustain grapes, its leaves and fruits for food.

Walls are perfect for vertical Gardening. Veranda roofs or shades can also be used for hanging plants.

In our place, you can't resist the beauty of nature. As a nature lover, I realize that one doesn’t come across individuals that are robustly independent from their environment; rather things are intimately interconnected with their surroundings in ways that we don’t fully understand.

Nature is the source of truth, goodness, and beauty, because of its intelligible structure. These pictures were taken months ago when my friends and I decided to stop and take pictures of this eye-catching view of a vast pineapple field and Mt. Matutum. This view of nature includes an inherent call to protect that which is true, good, and beautiful.

Let us continue to be awe-struck, like the child on the seashore, or clambering up a tree. Let us hold onto that experience, and fight for the environment that makes it possible, both for the child in each of us, and for those that come after us.

So it looks like MPE 2020 will have a total of 33 delegates. I really like this batch. I can see a number of them winning the main crown. It’s a shame that the pandemic has made it rather challenging for these women to be more active in their chosen environmental advocacies. But they’re doing great in social media.
